Where do you get your pet food? — Brooklynian

Where do you get your pet food?

We buy Pro Plan, which you can't get in regular grocery stores. Does anyone know of a place close to Newkirk and Westminster that sells pet supplies? I'm hoping someone opens one up in that newly rehabbed building on Newkirk and CIA...

  • It's A Dog's World just opened at 593 CIA. I forget the cross streets, maybe just pass C? Nice lady, some very upscale stuff. We stopped by Saturday to see into our kind of rawhide and jumbo bags of Chicken Soup for Dog Lover's Soul. She seems real eager to please and have the word spread. Apparently delivers too! • Sweet, it looks like it's CIA at Beverly. I'll check it out, thanks!
  • Subject: Dog Delite

I shop at the factory on 3rd Ave. When I have time, I go there. Otherwise, I order over the phone and they deliver on a certain day of the week for different areas of Brooklyn.
  • Marion at It's a Dog's World is great. I just call her up and tell her what I need, and she delivers it straight to my house. And great free samples, too.
  • Does It's a Dog's World have cat food too?
  • It does, and has many good brands. It also has little grey toy mice for 50 cents that my cats go crazy over.
  • Aw! I want a cat! But, my building doesn't allow pets! :-(
  • There is a new pet shop and animal rescue center opening on East third near Ft. Hamilton Parkway in the beginning of November. I read they will be carrying all kinds of dog and cat supplies in addition to rescued reptiles.

Rescued reptiles?! Yay! My hubby and I will be moving into the area soon, and this news makes us happy! We have our own modest collection of herps, and in the city it's kinda hard to find supplies for them..this gives me hope (also we just love to window shop)
  • Hamilton Dog House is going to open in a week or so on E. 3rd between Fort Hamilton Parkway and Caton. The owner is Sean Casey, a wonderful person who rescues animals. His website is at http://scarnyc.org/ . The website for his adoption service is at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NY637.html .

  • Pet Foods Plus on Kings Highway & E. 2nd St. Good selection and prices.
Also, Animal Fair on Prospect Park Southwest for higher quality foods.
  • I highly recommend Whiskers on East 9th in Manhattan:

Your pet deserves to eat food that is fit for human consumption. Your pet will thank you with a long and healthy life.
  • Hamilton Dog House carries a lot of brands of dog and cat food, like Wellness, Weruva, Innova, Merrick, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Science Diet, and others. If they don't have what you're looking for, they'll order it.

They also have an adoption center for rescued animals.

The store is at 153 East 3rd Street, between Fort Hamilton Parkway and Caton Avenue. The awning still says Tutti Frutti on it, which was the previous occupant.
  • I started going to the PETCO on Utica between Fillmore and Flatbush, now that they started carrying the Wellness brand
  • There's a generic corner store on 18th ave and Ocean Pkwy, across from the Pizza King (I think that is what it's called) and next door to the school that has a shockingly amazing selection and variety of cat and dog food and cat litter. And the guys who work there haven't sexually harassed me, so that's a plus, too!
  • I get Wellness at the PetCo in Union Sq. They have the large bags. I hop the Q. No big deal.
  • Have you tried

You can order by phone and have them deliver. I have used them and if you are SPECIFIC with your order, they are quite good!

Their addresses and such are available from their website
  • My wife and I have twice tried to sell our three cats on Wellness cat food, but our cats simply will not eat it. We tried introducing it to them in very small quantities. At the end of the meal, they'd eaten around the Wellness and it was just sitting there, in a lump. We tried swirling the Wellness up in their usual Science Diet food, and they refused to eat at all! We kept it up for several days and finally just gave up. They're still on Science Diet now.

What can I say? I'm sold on the virtues of Wellness, but our cats seem to be positively repulsed by it.
  • you should have just let it sit there and rot and the cats would starve until they liked it.
  • We did try to "hold out" for a while, but caved after a few hours and gave them the Science Diet they're accustomed to. Maybe one day we'll find a healthier food that they actually like, but until then we'll stick with their usual diet.
