Lockport Police received a 911 call from a frantic City of Lockport mother Sunday afternoon.

The mother told Lockport Police that she left her two year old unattended for a short time and after hearing the baby scream, she ran to see what was wrong.

When she got in the room, she told Lockport Police the dog, named "Bear" had sodomized the toddler. The mother screamed, scaring the dog out of the house, but the dog was still attached to the baby.

One neighbor told 2 On Your Side, she heard the mother screaming "the dog is raping my baby." Neighbors ran to help, but only one man was able to get the dog and child apart.

Anastacio Castillo says "I tried to get the dog away from the baby, the dog was already inside the baby." When the baby was finally free, he was visibly sick. Castillo says the boy was vomiting and bleeding.

The baby was rushed to Women and Children's Hospital where the toddler underwent reconstructive surgery.

The dog is being held at the Niagara County SPCA for evalution. An animal behavior specialist is scheduled to evaluate the pitbull on Friday.

Since the attack, over 20 people have called the SPCA asking to adopt the pitbull. Hear those calls by clicking Video.

The Niagara County District Attorney's office is assisting Lockport Police with the investigation.

Miranda Workman, behavior specialist at Purrfect Paws in Amherst says, "Most likely this is not a learned behavior. Dogs in tact, not spayed or neutered have a higher hormonal drive."

She urges parents to never, ever leave their children alone with a dog.

  • I wouldn't leave a baby alone alone.

But, as my father says, "An animal can turn on you at any time." It's not to say that they will or are likely to, but that they can and one should always be aware of this when dealing with animals that are powerful enough to harm a human. And a 2 year old is defenseless.

This is in no way pitbull specific.
  • Yeah, you should never leave a 2 year old alone ever. And it's not a good idea to leave a 2 year old alone with any dog. I have sympathy for the kid and the dog but none for the mother. I'm willing to bet that she didn't train the dog at all, and I doubt this was the first time the dog showed that type of behavior, plus the dog wasn't neutered! And exactly how long did she leave her kid alone for? The kid had to have diapers on at least and if he was dressed it would have taken a while for the dog to get through all that.

Geez, I couldn't even leave Cheech and Ripley alone together when I first got Ripley. When I went to work I had to put her in the bedroom because Cheech would get aggressive with her and she didn't know how to defend herself.

What the hell? There are so many things wrong with this story.
  • sodomy? all on its own? are you bleepin' kidding me? listen: dogs don't run around sodomizing other creatures. either 1) this was a learned behavior 2) the dog was assisted 3) a human did the deed and is blaming it on the dog

why did the mother leave her child alone? where were the diapers? anyone else in the home at the time?

we're not hearing the whole disgusting story, that's for sure. i'd bet my professional reputation on it.

what is your profession hehe, to be for your reputation is waged ;).
  • veterinary profession
  • 1) You shouldn't leave a 2-year-old alone, period.
    2) You shouldn't leave a young child unsupervised with ANY dog.
    3) The question shows the typical ignorance surrounding pitbull-types; they are one of the least human aggressive dogs around, unless trained otherwise.

Upon further consideration I'm inclined to agree. Unfortunately.

I am very sorry I read that article but I have to agree with shishkab. And assuming any part of this is true, the issue is not that the dog was a pit bull, the issue is that the dog was not neutered.

I'm sure there were times when my kids were 2 years old when they were in one room of the house and I was in another, but not for extended periods of time and not with a dog.
  • well the story is on legit website and link at bottom of the story.
  • would you leave a 2-year old alone...with a filing cabinet?

the parents of a friend did, the kid tried to climb it, it fell on him, causing serious injury and lifetime retardation.

the point is, toddlers shouldn't be left alone. period.

but i'm with shisk on this particular story. unless that dog is pretty dexterous. there ain't nothing the news loves better than a pit bull story, unless it's a story about child molestation. i bet this one was too good to be skeptical about.
  • I'm more inclined to think it was a cover up. Someone did something to that boy and the mother thought she could get away with pinning it on a "vicious pitbull". The media is notorious for misrepresenting dog attacks, labeling other breeds as pitbull type dogs. Not to mention that there are people who have no idea what a pit looks like. A woman I met while walking my dogs the other day was surprised that Ripley was a pit.

    Can you find the pit?

  • Anyone remember this story? Kind of makes you wonder why the family is so eager to have the pitbull euthanized.
Texas Mother Accused of Mutilating Baby

    May 11, 6:13 PM (ET)

    By JUAN A. LOZANO

HOUSTON (AP) - A mother who claimed the family dog tore off her baby son's genitals was arrested Friday and accused of mutilating the boy herself with a sharp instrument.

Katherine Nadal, 25, was led away in handcuffs while awaiting a court hearing on custody of the 3-month-old boy, Holden Gothia. She was charged with injury to a child and held on $100,000 bail.

Child-welfare authorities said she told social workers she woke up from a nap March 13 to find that her small dachshund had attacked her son.

But a veterinarian and a doctor agreed the dog did not cause the injuries, because there was no blood or human tissue on the animal or in its mouth, police said.

Police said in court papers that the mother had used a sharp instrument to cut off the boy's genitals. The instrument was not identified.

    Nadal's attorney had no comment.

Nadal had a history of prescription drug abuse and tested positive for cocaine and methadone the day after Holden was mutilated, authorities said.

She has been forbidden to see her son since the injuries occurred in March.

"Given what we know today, we will probably work toward terminating her parental rights and reuniting the child with his father or another relative," said Harris County Child Protective Services spokeswoman Estella Olguin.

The baby has years of reconstructive surgery and other operations ahead of him, said Daniel Sanders, an attorney for Camden Gothia, the baby's father.

The dog has since been released by authorities and adopted.

  • That story was terrible, terrifying and just gross.
Toddlers should never be left alone with any dog. But to single out the pitbull breed as dangerous is like asking, "would you leave your baby alone with a black person?" Pitbulls are inherently strong, but a dog is only as good as it's upbringing. I know of quite a few toy dogs that I would consider dangerous.
  • to clarified the title is there to get people to click on the thing. i dont think babies should be ever left alone. even for a few sec.
