Park Slope Food Co-op - article from NY Sun
From the New York Sun via Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn: "The Park Slope Food Co-Op is thought by many to be a terrifying place, a netherworld of rules and suspensions and withering stares if you forget to bring your own biodegradable shopping bag. The one time I'd gone there, as somebody's guest, when I reached out to pick up a persimmon only to be scolded by a dutiful member, who must have been following me through the aisles the whole time. "Excuse me," she said. "Guests aren't allowed to handle the produce."
Richard, leader of a recent Sunday afternoon orientation session, was so determined to present the Co-Op's gentler side that he had set up a table with organic treats such as carrots and humus and peach nectar for 30 prospective members. Before getting into anything as off-putting as regulations or free-range ethics, he started off the meeting by telling us how much the Co-Op has improved his life. "My ingestion has really changed," he said. "I'm juicing now!" Read the full text of this article...

Although the place is quite easy to lampoon, I think the Food Co-Op has an undeserved reputation as a place of uptight, PC, rule-following hippies. I haven't been a member for too long, but I've had almost nothing but good experiences there - so much so that I dread the few times a year when I have to go to a regular grocery store. I'd rather deal with the occaisonal lines and uppity person, and with the once-in-a-while incompetent Co-Op worker than with the cashiers at Key Food, who clearly hate their job every minute that they are there, and let you know it.
The only negatives come from this one old woman who rides a scooter around the store and apparently has never learned the words "please" or "excuse me" - but the Co-Op does not have a monopoly on rudeness. -

On that note, please join us for our "rude-in" at Muddy Waters at 7:40 pm tonight (8/9) before the DH air hockey/ping pong night. -
Can't make it out that early, but my girlfriend and I will be showing up to Bronstone Billards to kick some ass at air hockey!

What, do they think they're France or something? I mean, I certainly like France, but that's one place where you sure as hell better not touch the produce! Or else!!

That old lady on the scooter is a loooooong time member who has become increasingly unwell over the years...she didn't used to yell "wheelchair coming through!" all the time. She got by for years un-motorized and pleasantly chatting up people to give her wheelchair a push for a few blocks. I always admired her gumption.

Subject: Granola Nazis
I worked my shift this morning and we were all talking about the article. And addressing one another as "granola nazis." Hilarious.
I love how she complained about it being CLEAN. Who complains about a grocery store being clean? And called the labeling of things "babyish." It's babyish to put labels on things when everyone works three hours a month? Okay, lady. If you like shopping in an overpriced, understocked Key Food that smells like abused fish, more power to ya.
Howdy, Stranger!
