More Gunshots?!?
Did anyone else hear what seemed to be gunshots early this morning? It occured on Lincoln Pl. in between Underhill and Washington at around 2 or 3 AM. I heard 10 or so rounds fire off and called the police. A minute later, 4 or 5 more shots were heard. I never saw a cop patrol the area after I called. Did anyone else call the police? If not, why?

I didn't call, because I was asleep... didn't hear the shots pop aaaff

I'm getting bored of these gun shot threads!!!!
-
The shots shots woke me up...and then I heard a car burn rubber. This reminds me, does anyone know when the next precinct meeting will be held. As gun shots are now becoming a regular occurance in our neighborhood, you would think that we would have more police presence around.

I woke up hearing 5 faint pops around 4am. I didn't call because it sounded miles away. -
People wake up! There are no extra Police Officers! There is a Crisis! The City cannot recruit nor retain Police officers. Gunshot threads and people getting shot are quite the commonplace on this forum. Until people rally and support their Police you will continue to be woken from your sleep by gunshots.

I thought they were fireworks, but I remember drifting back to sleep and realizing that was unlikely.

What kind of support are you talking about? -

My vote is for the kind of support that entails paying them a wage that is comparable to surrounding areas. -
I heard it and i thought i heard what sounded like,
"put your hands up" being shouted by someone... -
I am also curious as to how the peaceful majority can rally and support our local police officers as well. I am all ears as to how you (king without a crown) personally rally and support them. Aside from the obligatory paying taxes that is (assuming you are employed). I admire your passion for the community. Why don't you lead the way? You have my support.
And why is it so boring/ridiculous that I expect to be served and protected by the local precinct, is that not their sole job discription? -

Um, I think KWAK is paving the way by actually being a cop.
From what I've put together, at least.

Yup, pay'em a decent salary. Who wants to get paid $25k for that kind of job?...or any job! Also, wouldn't it be nice if the 5-0 were from Brooklyn, not Long Island or wherever they come in from? If they were local, they wouldn't have to drive to the Caribbean Day parade and park in front of every fire hydrant and half in the cross walks.

Just so there aren't any misunderstandings, I'm posting the current NYPD salary chart. A cop you see on the street is NOT only making $25k. Having said that, NYPD are still VASTLY underpaid compared to neighboring communities in NJ and LI. Which I believe is a large reason for low recruiting and high defections.
Annual base salaries for officers hired during
and benefits:
January 2006 or after:
Police Academy (first six months): $25,100 (Annualized)
Upon completion of six months: $32,700
Upon completion of 1 ½ years: $34,000
Upon completion of 2 ½ years: $38,000
Upon completion of 3 ½ years: $41,500
Upon completion of 4 ½ years: $44,100
Upon completion of 5 ½ years: $59,588
* These salaries do not include overtime earnings, night-shift differential, holiday pay and uniform allowance.
When including base salary, average overtime and night shift differential, holiday pay, and uniform allowance, a Police Officer earns over $35,000, on average, in the first year; $45,000, on average, in the second year; $77,000, on average, after 6 years* 20 Paid vacation days your first year
http://www.nypd2.org/html/recruit/salary.html
* 27 Paid vacation days after 5 years of service
* Unlimited sick leave with full pay
* A choice of paid medical programs
* Prescription, dental, and eye glass coverage
* Annuity fund
* Deferred Compensation Plan, 401K and I.R.A.
* Optional retirement at one half salary after 20 years of service
* Annual $12,000 Variable Supplement Fund (Upon retirement)
* Annual banking of $12,000 Variable Supplement Fund after 20 years of service (If not retiring)
* Excellent promotional opportunities
* Educational opportunities
* Additional benefits are available to military personnel. -
Here's a little news for you folks. The reason you don't see more cops is that things are worse on the east end of the precinct. As I've been told several times "we put officers where we have the biggest problems".I live on a block where there were two homicides in less than six months last year, and we couldn't get additional patrol officers. You guys live in the quietest part of the precinct, and I'd guess you won't see a big uptick in police presence without something really serious happening.

Ninja Rabbit: Awesome use of the "event" feature!
More Gunshots?!?
Event: 03 Sep 2007 03:00 am -
You can support the cause in many ways, ie:write a letter to the mayor, get your community boards involved, Rally. The more people that are involved the greater impact they might have. Police Officers in this city have been working without a contract for over 3 years. It's members are demoralized, working day in and day out without being fairly compensated. If you remember what happened last year when MTA went on strike after 1 day of working without a contract. Imagine if the NYPD decided to strike. Imagine the death and mayhem that would result. Nobody takes that job to become rich, but to be able to support yourself, let alone a family is virtually imposible on that salary.

Yeah I agree. Granted, ideally no shootings etc would be the best way to go, but it's not like the Pink Houses on Washington/St. Johns. -

I support a lot of what you said, but well now, that last comment is overblown. Average income in our neighborhood as of the last census data was $40,000. $25K at Police Academy is much more than what graduate most students make, but then those salaries once they're on the force are perfectly good for the area, comparable to what people with graduate degrees make, but with particularly fast acceleration. More than most people I know make. That is, people who support themselves. -
I think what many people forget is that you can't compare being a cop to "regular" jobs. Cops immediately become a target when they put on their uniforms, some people hate them simply for what they are. The same can't be said for nurses, accountants, engineers, receptionists, etc... Their jobs are dangerous, that uniform elicits anger from people who know nothing about the person wearing it. Even seeing their salaries and benefits I still wouldn't want to do their job. I'm not some police groupie or anything, I can understand why the NYPD can't get more recruits though.

I hate receptionists. Seeing them in their smart business attire makes my blood boil. -
$ 25,000 in the Police Academy. Police Academy= 6 months. Salary $12,500. Uniform/Equiptment=$3000 factor Transportation to the Police Academy offsite training ie: Bronx Rodmans neck (Firearm Training)/Floyd Bennett Field(drivers Training) and various other locations. Rent, food various other bills, child care. Not much left in the pot when all is said and done. No wonder 100 Recruits resigned the first week. Not too mention the dept is down 6000 cops since 2001 and is continually losing Police officers to other Depts and attrition every week.
Howdy, Stranger!
