Looking to move to PH.

Hello All,

I am looking to move into PH, and just had a few questions. I searched for similar posts, but either they were to old or didn't fit my situation. I would be looking for a studio or 1 br. I was wondering if just under $1000-$1200 is a feasible rent for a decent sized studio or small 1 br? I am fairly flexible with the PH borders, and would be fine with as far east as Franklin. Looking on Craigslist, I noticed most listing were not in PH at all. I was wondering if there is a better way to search for an apt in the area? Are there any landlords to stay away from?

    I would think that your price range would get you a studio in, "flexible" PH with the possibility of PH proper. As far as finding something that is actually in the neighborhood, you can either search for, Park Slope instead of PH, search for streets or landmark names (Grand Army Plaza comes to mind), or just keep searching for PH and filter your results yourself.

    i will say this: look out for the broker marjorie thompson. she was a nightmare to deal with..truly terrible.

    Try doing an archive search on Marjorie Thompson, or just for the word "brokers" in general. There have been mixed opinions on her (most bad, if I remember right). Anyway, there have already been several threads on brokers so no need to reinvent the wheel there.

    Craigslist is fairly representative, and you can find stuff on there. Look in PARK SLOPE, PROSPECT HEIGHTS, and CROWN HEIGHTS, then check addresses. Another option is to walk the streets in the areas you like, and write down phone numbers. There are often FOR RENT signs in available places.

    If your situation allows, I strongly recommend taking a sublet for a few a month or so in the area where you want to live. Then you can look at places while here instead trying to find places from a distance or choosing a place during a one day visit.

    I did this when I moved to NY from far away. Friends from Brooklyn had given lots of advice on neighborhoods but I was really glad I had time to look at lots of places to see what I could get plus I could walk around the neighborhoods both at night and during the day. I just put my stuff in a storage unit and used the persons furniture--it was really convenient and worth the extra effort of moving my stuff twice.

    I was born in Brooklyn, and have lived in the city for quite some time . I have an idea about the area, although it is a bit different from when I remember it. I'm hoping to find something in PH proper for my price range, if not I'd be willing to go just outside (or more east into PH depending on your border). I thank everyone for their advice.

    In your original post you said that you were willing to go as far east as Franklin. I'll bet you can find a studio for $1,200 or under with that boundary. That is definitely into Crown Heights, though, FWIW.
