  • I too have been "stoned" on St. Marks. And Carlton, and Vandy, and Prospect Place, and Flatbush...as many streets as it takes for me to stumble home.
    Hah! Well put.

if that happened to me the only parts of my character that would get built would be aggression and antagonism, neither of which am i interested in cultivating

i find that little strip of st marks always prone to difficulty, it's where the water throwing was happening last summer and i always sense that the packs of kids that congregate there are prone to being problematic.

Yea I don't even like walking past that corner (St. Marks & Grand) and I could pass for a native...

I don't know how you peeps w/o bikes do it, I hate walking through the neighborhood.
  • I've never had a problem walking around this neighborhood since I moved here in '02, but I know that corner of St. Marks and Grand. I've seen those cats hanging out there and skated by them many times, and I guess I could imagine them doing something stupid. Maybe. I've walked by there a bunch of times while doing laundry and have had no problems. A few years ago I was a little (very) drunk late one night on Bergen betw. Underhill and Vandy and I asked a guy on the street if he had an extra cigarette and he told me that I "shouldn't be rolling up on heads like that, son." I thought it was funny because I said "pardon me" before I asked. He, apparently, didn't. I do like walking around here, though. After all, it is my neighborhood.

I never said what race the humans in this report were. Your uniformed prejudice is as dangerous as the stones.

And sometimes kids aren't kids anymore. When they become dangerous to law-abiding citizens.

I don't remember worrying about being stoned (in the tossing heavy objects meaning) 40 years ago in this neighborhood.
I know for a fact that the victim in the story was a white yup (with a slim chance of them being an Asian). Go ahead and tell me I'm wrong. I dare you. 8)

Really, Restless Native, why do you always have to jump on every possible opportunities to slam "yuppies"? We're all very well aware of your disdain in this regard. It's pretty tired. And you obviously DON'T know anything "for a fact" about what race this person was or whether he was a "yup."

More importantly, what does this person's race have to do with it anyway? Nobody should have rocks thrown at them while they're walking down the street, plain and simple.
  • I know a black yuppie. His name's Darren. We throw rocks at him all the time.

    :P
  • So is this near the water bucket hijinx from earlier this summer (drenching apollonia with groceries, no less...)?
  • jeffrey wrote: So is this near the water bucket hijinx from earlier this summer (drenching apollonia with groceries, no less...)?
It's a couple of blocks west of where the water bucket thing happened -- that was at St. Marks and Grand.
  • interesting tidbit:

I just walked home from beast (was at barrette for a few hrs but it got loud and young - blech) and was walking east on prospect when I hit underhill. I turned south, then, b/c I hate walking by that sketchy alley by c-town on washington, so I wanted to hit washington off park. as I was manipulating this complex navigation problem (aka crossing the street), I noticed two police officers on foot patrol coming from the st. marks vicinity. fascinating. but I was freezing and continued on my ultra-cool path home. too cold to investigate.

question for cops reading: what'd happen if a friendly, non-violent, not-touchy inebriated person walking home approached a foot patrol to chat?

    1) Said cop(s) would give you the standard criminal-first-friendly-person-second look and maybe warm up to you, 2)You might get a rare friendly conversation out of the patrolperson(s) unless you are:
    A) Obviously drunk or high, in which case you'll probably get cop sarcasm and condescension.
    B) Really pretty, in which case, you will get hit on, cop style.
    3) Said cop(s) will just be pricks off the bat.

should of hit on those cops if they were cute :p.
  • it was a guy/chick combo. neither were my type so hitting on them didn't occur to me. but I did consider going up to them to ask about the foot patrol, but then I decided that was probably a lousy idea. I mean, I was carrying a loaded dustbuster in my backpack.
  • That reminds me... I saw two cops (both guys this time) on foot patrol on Washington near Teddy's about three weeks ago. It was around 7 or so in the evening. I was waiting for takeout and they popped in and said hello to Teddy very briefly, then kept walking down Washington.

Glad to see some foot patrols happening around here -- I just hope they're also covering more than just Washington, as more of this stuff seems to take place on other streets nearby.
  • The majority of the Cops would welcome your idle chatter, some of the rough around the edge female Cops probably wouldn't be as warm. But they're not really warm to the male cops either. As far as extra patrols in that area, thats due to a recent spike in Robberies in the west end of the precinct. According to Gothamist there was a shooting on Washington ave-St Johns Place in the early AM. If the precinct could spare the Cops there'd be one on every corner of the 77 pct.

Hi guys! Me and the fam heard about Park Slope through the grapevine, and we have decided that it is the only place for us and we belong there. Money is not an object. We will begin the 3000 mile trek to our new home there in the Slope next week, and start renovating. However, before we arrive, I'm hoping some of you veteran Slopers ("veteran meaning you've been a Sloper for more than 6 months, hello!) could answer some questions about necessities:

Organic tofu? My children are only allowed to eat the purest free-range unflavored tofu while they watch their Baby Einstein DVDs. Where's the best tofu shopping in the Slope?

Parking garages? We've heard only those out of the loop park on the street, will there be ample private parking for our Volvo and Subaru wagons?

Other necessities, like Real Estate Brokers, Coffee Shops with Ironic Names, Pretentious Restaurants, Overpriced Children's Clothing Boutiques? I'm hoping to stay away from such useless businesses as affordable supermarkets, 99 Cent Stores, Shoe Repair, etc!!

Thanks for the help guys and gals, will be back for your advice on either a Filipino or West Indian nanny! Ciao for now!

Sure, ignore me calling you out on what you "know for a fact" about the race and "yuppiness" of the person who got rocks thrown at him. Go off on your oh-so-ironic, ham-fisted parody about tofu, Subarus, and a bunch of other stuff that has nothing whatsoever to do with this thread.

    Gosh, you're so clever.

Back on topic: Nobody of any race should have to worry about some jerks of any age throwing rocks at him as he walks down the street. It's far from the worst thing that's happened to someone in this neighborhood, but it's still not okay. And whether this guy was a white "yup" or Asian or whatever other group you've got your BVD's in a knot over has no bearing on that.

Ya know, back when I was in the military and stationed in various parts of the country, I used to always ask people about what it was like to grow up there, what the local culture was like, etc. Now I know better. The next time I find myself in a new place, I'm gonna hit 'em with the ol' patented spoiled yup 1-2 cross that never gets old! It'll go something like this:

    ME: So where ya from?

LOCAL: Oh, actually I was born and raised here in (Anyplace besides Brooklyn). My parents..

ME: YAWN. Big f'in deal. What do you think that makes you special or somethin'? You some sort of elitist or somethin'? What difference does it make where you're from anyway? Stop livin' in the past Abraham. My town has everything this town does. And what's with that funny accent you've got?

Ahhh yeah, the new way to make friends, a la Brooklyn's newest guests! 8)

yeah, tonight there was a cop outside my apt. building on washington ave. from before 6pm to after 9pm or later... my friends kept coming over and being like, "why is there a cop outside your door?"

we didn't bother to tell him he was standing in the place the pigeons like to perch and shit, oh well.

It was about as dead on as characterizing all New Yorkers of Italian decent as goombas. Or all New Yorkers of African decent as gang bangers. Or all New Yorkers of Asian decent as dog eaters. Or all gay men in New York as flamboyant interior decorators. ... ... ... Simple thoughts that don't tax the simple minds.

Cuz Why Fi is the cool, hip yup voice of reason, a yup's yup, the kinda guy that makes you just wanna buy him a drink when you see him at SODA.

That is, if you can make your way through the throngs waiting to hear his stories about growing up on the mean streets of Compton.

good to know. I'll bear that in mind next time I spot a foot patrol and am not wearing insufficient layers for the temperature. thanks.

Actually if you hadn't said "He without sin throw the first stone"
these kids wouldn't have done it.

To the victims of that action ,you
should advise them to hug thy enemys and then check that they still have their wallets.

    You mean they're not?

    Of course not!

Some are quite restrained interior decorators.

  • Right, right. Excellent point.
  • Daver and Liftandcut, you should be ashamed of your ignorance. Anyone who watches Bravo knows that the gay male population in NYC breaks down like this:
    20% interior decorators (flamboyancy optional)
    20% foodies
20% people who can fix your hair
20% people who can fix your wardrobe
    20% life coaches
  • Yes, it seems living in Brooklyn has caused me to forget my Greenwich Village roots. For shame.
