for a pet who fell out the window

when my dear friend was away, her roommates left the kitchen window open and the cat fell 6 stories landing on a fence and breaking her leg. my friend already paid over $1000 in bills and now the surgery will cost another $3000+. my question is this, she has not more extra $$$ or credit card and so the vet sent them home today with just a splint - sounds REAL bad. she when to the shelter (?) is it, aspca or humane society on 92nd street and applied for aide there but was denied for what seems like BS, but i'm not sure. all i know is that she doesn't currently have $3000 or the credit card and was turned away from the vet --- does anyone have any advice?

thanks.

  • i know a lot of owners apply for CareCredit.

    http://www.carecredit.com/
  • It looks like a link for human healthcare.

Damn, that cat is lucky to even be alive! This is why you have to have screens in your windows people!
  • Sorry to hear that.
Maybe the Animal Medical Center (62nd St or near there in Manhattan) which is a teaching hospital, may be a good bet.
  • care credit is used all the time for vet care. if you explore the home page, it even touts it somewhere. i know plenty of clients over the years who've used it.

AMC doesn't take high-rise kitties as teaching animals. unfortunately, high-rise kitties are all too common in this city :(
  • thanks, everyone!
  • $3000 for the surgery sounds kind of outrageous. My old dog Rasputen snapped a tendon in his wrist and had to have the bones fused together so he could walk. It was around $2200 or so and that was for an 85lb dog. If your friend can get to NJ and get a referral, I highly recommend Garden State Veterinary Specialists. This place is great and the founder Dr. Thomas D. Scavelli has been written up in New York magazine. I think it may be cheaper there as well. Here is their website and a few stories about them.

  • My cat fell off (or jumped, we're not sure) my fire escape last year. Second floor. Vet said its actually more dangerous to fall from the lower than the higher floors (they have more time to straighten themselves out during the fall).

Anyway, I went to Animal Kind, got a splint (more like 4- he kept slipping out of them) and he wore them for about 2 months. He hated me the whole time.
He only broke a couple of toes which they mentioned might need surgery if they didn't heal properly. I really couldn't go for that (no money, and as long as there's no pain, ya know, so his writing career is over, I'm not in a position where I can pay thousands for a feline orthopedic surgeon)

All ended and healed well. Cost: around $400
  • i think with my friend, the situation might have been worse just b/c when she found the cat, the leg was swollen to about 3x bigger than normal, she was covered with dried blood, and there might have already been infection and other complications b/c the cat had seemed to have been out on the ground for a few days -- the poor 'lil girl! (roomates didn't "notice" her missing). plus the original $1000 was, i believe, after hours on a sunday --- which might have hiked the price?!

but i don't know, from what she blogged, seems like they were maybe trying to squeeze some extra bucks from her!!!
  • Yikes! If I were her, I'd be thinking about suing my negligent roomies for the veterinary expenses!
  • she is my friend, but i am still wondering why not window screens or something --- you know, $10 at the hardware store for those ones that fit in the bottom of the window at least?

  • Those aren't too sturdy. But even getting full window screens made and fitted isn't that expensive. I used Tempest Windows and it cost me about $178 for five windows. And that included the service call.

Many animal adoption agencies won't even let you adopt a cat unless you have screens in your windows. When I adopted Tuly, it was in the contract that I was required to have screens in my windows.
  • my 1/2 screens are sturdy now that they've rusted into place for ever!

nice head's up on the screen installation -- wish i owned my place!
  • I rent. But I still got screens installed because I didn't want kitties flying out the windows, nor flies in my apartment.
