Moving to old Curves spot. Guess they're vacating big spot down on 6th/Flatbush? Makes sense. Wonder what is gonna take that big space.

  • probably

    A. Jamba juice
    B. Starbucks
    C. Chase bank branch

i would say its %90 that its going to be a bank.
  • Or another realty office, we don't have enough of those!
  • i know
    so depressing

that is a really nice location, maybe something interesting will go in there.
  • on a related note, does anyone else who lives in the 'hood have a real problem with the NOISE of Flatbush?! man i loathe even walking down that street. it's the cacophony, dear readers (and i know, "it's the city, yo! get used to it") that bothers me. but for some reason, the biznesses that I go to on/near Flatbush (Flatbush Farm, Franny's, etc) don't seem to be inundated with street noise. Maybe I have such a problem because before my gf and I moved to our co-op, she lived on Flatbush and the street noise invaded every aspect of our lives. it's country quiet on my block 95% of the evenings.
  • flatbush ave is insane, i hate haveing to cross it to get over to park slope.
i would never want to live directly on it. but as you say walk 1 block away from it and its country quiet

yet strangely i like going to burrito bar?
  • Indeed. we're more than a few blocks off Flastbush, but still, standing on Prospect Place btw. Carlton + Vanderbilt=freaking quiet. i am farther west on Prospect, and dang, it's so quiet. love it.
  • while i used to think flatbush was bad, it's nothing compared to the noise of the motorini in italy...
  • freaking scooters keeping you awake?! i enjoyed seeing folks of all ages weaving in and out of traffic on those buggers in it-lee. but yeah...its like a swarm of bees.
  • Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!
It's going to be a bank.
Over the next couple of weeks Royal Video is going to be moving its business a few blocks north on Flatbush, to a smaller storefront near Prospect Place that briefly housed Curves (see photo on jump). The original store between Bergen and St. Marks, meanwhile, is likely to be afflicted affected by the bank branch expansion craze. Two banks are currently bidding to take Royal Video’s old spot, according to one of the store’s employees. Whether or not the bank talk is true (and we’re betting it is), we’re definitely going to be sad to see Royal’s yellow-and-green signage go the way.

one could always go visit the identical-looking Coyal Video sign on Ave U in Marine Park
  • Man, this place sucks. I don't see how an brick and mortar video store competes with Netflix etc but I see no way an unorganized and boring one can survive against Netflix etc.

Get Reel Video on 5th is pretty cool. At least they have interesting sections and the boxes are alphabetized.
  • Yea, that place is awful. I'm amazed that in this day and age they have so many VHS tapes. Maybe I should dig up my beta player and see if they can hook me up with a copy of Mark Hamill's "Corvette Summer". Or maybe a laser disc of "The Whiz".
  • Maybe they have a good porn section... porn looks just as good on VHS as it does on DVD =)

but with porn on dvd you can jump to certain chapters, which, shockingly, often coincide with pseudo-dramatic fucking. very handy when you have a device your kitten hasn't mangled the cord on and need to ...

    wait. I've said too much.
  • I joined Get Reel Video instead. On 5th. Not too far from the Heights.

GREAT video store. It's tough to do brick & mortar video these days but if you do it, you should do it the way they're doing it. Wednesday's are always half-price rentals and they have some other cool specials too. They're movies are categorized in the right way (Foreign, Horror, Criterion, etc) and alphabetized (what a concept).
  • Fast forward to July 2013:

The "new location" is now closing:

    Goodnight

  • I love how they are blaming Barclay Center for the closing.

I think I will open a store selling reel-to-reel tapes, eight tracks, and 78 RPM records and then blame Ratner when my business flops.

  • Woah! There was an open video store?! How delightfully vintage!

  • i rented a video from there once. it was a good place to instantly rent whole seasons of non-streaming tv series on dvd and binge on them for just a couple bucks.

unfortunately i never remembered that fact and havent even thought about them since the last time i did that. sorry to see them go, the times they are a-changin
