Mooney's Evicted! Same evil landlord as Royal Video

This is sad. I've only been to Mooney's a couple of times, but I like it - such a great jukebox! I'm definitely there next Thursday.

Scott is a great guy, I've known him and his family for a few years. He told me what was happening last week and it really pissed me off. It seems to me that all the things that made people want to move to Brooklyn are slowly being eradicated. I've lived in Brooklyn for 25 years and I am saddened by the changes. Most of them are not for the better. -

did they say anything about possible relocation? I realize the bar is an institution on that strip of Flatbush but I hate the idea of it just ... disappearing. -
If the bar is such an institution and so popular then a small increase of prices should more than make up for the increase in the rent.
And if Flatbush is destined for high rent chain stores then Mooneys would be smart to sign a long term lease at the higher rent and if he cant make it, sell the lease himself to some national chain.
I just have to ask how you can all call the LL greedy without knowing his/her expenses (taxes etc..) and also without knowing what the market rate is for similar priced stores on the strip.
If Mooney's was enjoying below market rents (apparently even Mooney's agrees that $4000 is below market) pursuant to a long-term lease - was the bar owner "greedy" for pocketing the $2000 for the last few years? -

Yes! Me too! -
I'm done for next Thursday for sure! I missed the last one cause of work stuff... anyone miss me? Haha.
Mod question - is it usually the case to post a new one for just HH events? -

yeah, we'll do a new post now.

unfortunately I can't blend topics so just pop over there and say you're coming or whatever. -

I think he's looking for a new location, but we'll see what happens. One of the many beauties of Mooney's is that it's pretty inexpensive - that's what allows the beautiful combination of people from all walks of life in there. I think it'll be hard to maintain that atmosphere if he has to pay a huge increase in rent.

Most depressing news ever.

where will all the drunk old men go for their 8am pick-me-ups?

Scumbags..
I hope the landlord gets a nice case of food poisoning as karma for this. :x -
did anyone ever gather at Mooney's in the 90's to cheer the Knicks on during the playoffs? heartbreak city, year after year! those were some of my most memorable nights in Brooklyn. what a bonding experience. I can't believe this bar is actually getting the boot. it's just such a sad, pathetic day...

Guys. I'll miss Mooney's like everybody else, but you all are waaaaay too rag3d at just the landlord over this. The way I see it, we're partially to blame - at least since I've been coming to the HH's there have been more held at Soda alone than Mooney's - and we've had a heckuva lot that weren't at Soda. When someone new to the area comes to the board and wants to know a good place to meet people or hang out, Mooney's is rarely - if ever - recommended. Stories about drinking exploits, nights out, or whatever else rarely begin with, "We were at Mooney's, and..." It's easy to be pissed at the landlord, and there's definitely good reason for it - it's a big hike - but the fact is that the joint has a lot of competition which a lot of people here patronize more than they do Mooney's. That's a situation that could hardly be expected to change if they hiked drink prices to close the gap - and even if it did, doing so would probably gut their base business.
Anyhow, I'm just saying this because I was about to make a "the landlord should be shot, thrown in a ditch, and then hit with a stiff fine" post (do not do any of that stuff, please), and I realized it had been a loooong time since I had stopped in there for a quick one or brought a few of my friends to the place. -
very sad to hear about mooney's and i'll try to make next DH_HH.
it's my understanding that it is not strictly being a matter of the Landlord and mooney's not having a meeting of minds over the amount of the new lease but that the landlord just does not want a bar in that space under any circumstances. -

Ah, well...then there truly is nothing for it. See you on the 15th. -
Subject: This is devestating!
Everyone should give them as much business as possible before they go. Really great bar - and really great people running it. SO SAD! -

That seemed to be the case at first, but there have been a few hints (and the word on the street is) that there may be a bar going in to take its place. -

Bastards!! -
Maybe they'll reincarnate themselves again like they did when they moved to Flatbush. Anybody else out there remember Moony's from when they were on 7th Ave right near Union? Now THAT was a dive bar. They got booted out of there around '87 or '88 so that weird discount drugstore could go in the space. The move to Flatbush was huge - 10x nicer than the old place. They used to be one of the few places in the neighborhood where you could hear live bands on the week-end without cover (after Ryan's and The Alamo closed). The City made them stop the live bands around '98 or 99. That really sucked and I think it hurt their business a bit.
Anyway, maybe he'll reopen for a third time on Washington. Or maybe he'll just retire. -

Seriously. Is anything going on with the old Utopia/PK's space? -
Has anyone else read the article on Mooney's in this week's Brooklyn Paper? Apparently the landlord has a very different story, saying that Mr. Mooney is having trouble paying the current rent. Either way, Mooney owns a bar of the same name in Bay Ridge, so if people still want to support him, simply ride the R train southward to 7710 Third Avenue.

interesting the royal video people said it wasn't the rent, hmm i think mooney is lying. why would the other person said it isnt lol and he is saying it is.

From the NY Times article from 1987 (posted on the Park Slope board)
Kevin Mooney, who has run Mooney's Pub at 99 Seventh Avenue since 1969, said he has been unable to renew his lease, and the unglamorous, low-key bar will soon move to Flatbush Avenue.
''They don't want bars on Seventh Avenue anymore,'' Mr. Mooney said. ''It was very, very sad, but we have to cope with the times.''
MOST of the new renovations and developments under way are in the southern section of the Slope, once a working-class neighborhood with several light industries. Developers have pushed past Ninth Street, the previous mental boundary of the fashionable Park Slope, and begun converting old factories and abandoned apartment buildings into co-ops. -
Mooney's was the first place I went when I moved here 12 years ago - shame - big loss. And a much bigger loss than Snooky's will ever be - Mooney's really did welcome people from all racial backgrounds.

Nice article from today's NY Times...

That story made me so sad

I wish he'd reopen somewhere close. Bay Ridge is just to far to grab a beer or have a happy hour. -
aww. seriously sad.
