Yeah, not to mention that you have to go to Bay Ridge! -
Subject: I'm actually incredibly happy and relieved about this...
I realize it won't make me popular here.
But I live several floors above Mooney's, and the noise (bass) at night is terrible. I spend a gazillion dollars on a soundproof mat and take sleeping pills which is really not healthy.
I went to talk to them about it twice (in my PJs, at night) and they just couldn't care less.
I'm all for trying to keep local flavors but my health is more important to me.
The noise, by the way, is all week, not just weekends, and goes well into the night.
They really aren't the nice people you all seem to think they are. -

Needless to say, I'm up because of the noise. -

Hello and Good Morning, you chose to live above A BAR!!!

You mean to tell me that when you signed the lease, the possibility that you were going to deal with late-night noise didn't even once cross your mind?
Am I the only one that thought that people who choose to live above bars do it for a reason, e.g. cheap rent, they work nights, they like to party, etc? :?
You could've lived in a million other apartments.. it's entitlement like this that just baffles me. -
Wow, I'm agreeing with Restless Native :?

Seriously, you could be living above a bar that actually has a DJ and a young rowdy cliental. As Mr. Mooney stated himself, his bar has never had a fight. It's a pretty mellow bar. -
a cheaper solution to the heavy soundproofing might been to just go downstairs and have a few. that always puts me right out
-
Subject: To all those entitled bar goers out there.
Um, no. First of all, please don't pretend to be naive. This is a difficult city to find housing in and you guys have no idea what my constraints are. Also, living a couple of floors above a bar I had reasonable expectations of quiet.
The entitled people are you, if you think you have the right to frequent a place that disturbes others. And possibly you guys all are lucky enough to have freelance careers or a trust fund, but some of us need to be at work in the morning and can't just drop by a bar at 1:00 am.
There are LOTS of things a responsible bar owner can do:
1) Lower the bass.
2) Install some better insulation.
3) Place strategically the speakers.
4) LOWER THE VOLUME.
There's a difference between tolerating SOME noise and CONSTANT noise, loud noise and low noise.
There are reasons there's a new noise code in this city. As long as this is an APARTMENT BUILDING, I have every expectation for reasonable amoutn of quiet after 10:00pm. Especially on a weekday.
Also, I didn't insult any of you, though I did critic the bar owners. I wrote this to give you a different angle on the whole thing, not to get into fights. So some basic manners would be nice. -
Subject: NYC's noise code
There's a reasonable amount of noise, and a non-reasonable amount of noise. See for yourselves:
MUSIC FROM BARS AND RESTAURANTS
New York’s world renowned entertainment industry provides
billions of dollars to the City’s economy. The noise code attempts to
balance this vital economic necessity with residential quality of life
concerns. This is inherently a difficult process, but the noise code
attempts to allow both parties increased flexibility, comfort and
responsiveness.
Commercial establishments that play music must limit the level of
unreasonable or disturbing noise that escapes into the streets or
nearby residences.
The noise code restricts the decibel levels generated by music
emanating from these businesses.
Sound levels:
• may not exceed 42 decibels as measured from within
nearby residences,
OR
• may not exceed 7 decibels over the ambient, as measured
on a street or public right of way 15 feet or more from the
source, between 10:00 p.m. and 7 a.m.
CAPTURING BASS SOUNDS
Often residents are disturbed by pervasive bass sounds that
resonate physically and can be felt by a person. The new code
includes a decibel standard in order to regulate these disturbing
sounds.
ENFORCEMENT
Both DEP and NYPD may enforce these sections of the noise code.
Though DEP will most often respond to residential complaints and
schedule an inspection appointment at an appropriate time to take
meter readings, NYPD, due to its presence in local communities, is
better equipped to respond to complaints in a timely manner.
Non-emergency calls regarding music from bars or restaurants
should be directed to 311.

The music at Mooney's is really never that loud. I'd be really surprised if they violated the decibel limit.
-
What is Mooney's final day of business?

Whoah, you got some ribbing for your first couple of posts, but it was pretty gentle, given that what you've done is roughly analagous to showing up at the deathbed of someone who is surrounded by old friends sharing remembrances to say, "Good riddance! I always hated that guy anyway!" You may well have legitimate gripes about Mooney's (some of which might be better directed at your landlord for not adding adequate soundproofing), but a lot of people had a great deal of affection for the place and it was a neighborhood institution for many years. This thread is where many people were expressing that, and your surprise that your remarks drew some criticism seems fairly disingenuous.
You got what you wanted, right? The bar's closing. So what's the purpose of throwing salt on the wound for those who are sad to see it go? Let the people who will miss Mooney's mourn it -- you can go on feeling satisfied that it's not going to be around much longer. -
I understand the affection - I personally prefer Flatbush over 7th precisely because it's not so gentrified - but my complaint wasn't a lifestyle complaint. I wasn't saying something like "those sketchy characters standing outside mooney's all day bother me", like I've heard from some people in the past few weeks. I am not complaing about the guys smoking at the entrance to my door and hitting on me. All that's cool. I AM complaining about very pervasive noise that is very bad for my health. I don't think you can compare a loss of a landmark, however sad, with damage to anyone's health. Since I can't really afford to move, I'm stuck. So, yeah, I don't really feel bad about bursting into a funeral.
As for appealing to my landlord - from all the information I gathered so far I understand that the responsibity for costs lays at the source of the noise. Which is Mooney's. If you can show me something else, I'll be grateful. -
Cinnamon999 wrote: So, yeah, I don't really feel bad about bursting into a funeral.
Yeah, see, whereas I would choose to NOT burst into the funeral to begin with, since it doesn't serve any purpose to do so. Like I tried to explain before, emotions are pretty high about this, and you're getting what you want anyway since the bar is closing. So I just don't get why you feel the need to do this at all. -

If this is the code that they put together, they put it together to have an excuse to shut ANYONE down - 42dB is very quiet. You, sitting there clicking at your keyboard is louder than 42dB. 7dB over ambient is a little more reasonable, and there's not a snowball's chance in hell that (the outside of) Mooney's has ever been 4 times louder than the traffic on Flatbush Avenue.

I find myself in the same strange position as mamacita, I agree with Restless Native. You knew you were moving into an apartment above a bar. Bars are noisy by nature, so I don't see how it came as a surprise to you that it would be difficult to sleep. It would be a different story if you moved into the apartment and THEN a bar opened up in the building.
-
well, i'll say i obviously expected some noise. and obviously can live (and sleep) with some noise. I'm always broke, and always living in crap apartments like this (this is like the nicest place i've lived in ever, in other respects). as i said, I lived directly above a restaurant once. there are just different types of noise. some you learn to live with, as I have, and some you simply never will, because FEELING LIKE SOMEONE'S KICKING YOU is all the time is just horrible. It's not annoying hints of music. It's much much worse.
I agree that the standard is really strict. And i'm not out to get anyone. Had the people at mooney's said something like: "let's talk about it, let's see what we can do to get us both to be able to live here", well, i really suspect we could figure something out. But their attitude that they have no duties, and that i have no rights - that's just abuse. sorry. and please stop pretending that you're defending an underdog because maybe in mooney's vs. brooklyn gentrification they are the underdog, but in me vs. mooney's, I'm the underdog. they are business owners, maybe not successful business owners, but there are costs built in to having a business. i'm just me. i can't afford lawyers, i put that noise proof mat on my credit card, etc. So don't feel so righteous. -
Cinnamon999 wrote: FEELING LIKE SOMEONE'S KICKING YOU
interestingly, I play poker on a regular basis in a friend's apartment whose downstairs neighbor is a bass-assault freak. guess what? it's nothing like the music or noise of mooney's.
also, with the mayor's new laws, if you wanted to get the joint shut down, you could've. if the noise was at the levels you allege, I mean. how do I know this? a good friend of mine is a club owner and, among other things, she carries a decibel reader. she knows exactly when someplace is violating the law. and ... she was playing poker with me at my friend's place. so. she knew those decibel levels violated the law. it was far louder in the nut-job's apartment. but nothing was as loud as mooney's. so. no. I don't believe you. and please, stop shitting on the funeral.
EDITED TO ADD: to clarify, after a re-read, the apartment I'm referring to was FAR louder than Mooney's has ever been. Mooney's, in my opinion, is one of the least noisy bars in the neighborhood - one of the many reasons I will miss it. and I definitely think that if I'd brought my friend's decibel reader to Mooney's, my position would remain the same. it's just not that loud. -
That goes from vehement to downright disgusting. So much for "neighborhood".
-
So whose down for another happy hour at Mooney's?
Ya feel me Restless Native?
I think I'll start taking up smoking and hang out in front of the bar
-
Cinnamon999 wrote: That goes from vehement to downright disgusting. So much for "neighborhood".
I'm not sure what you expected. You have been relentlessly and stridently attacking a beloved neighborhood institution even after numerous long-time posters here (including some who virtually never agree with each other about anything) have told you you're being ridiculous. And you're doing this at a time and in a thread where we're mourning the loss of said institution. Several moderators have tried to explain to you why this is an inappropriate time and place for these obstreperous attacks and yet you persist. I suggest you let it go. You've made your points and nobody agrees. -
As far as I know there have been few complaints about Mooneys. Other than the occasional Bar fight. Soda Bar on the other hand, has generated 100's of complaints in the past 5 years. The few times I've been to Mooneys, I've never seen a rowdy crowd or heard "unreasonable noise".
I am curious what the Rent is for that apartment anyway, and if there was a disclaimer in the lease regarding the noise?
P.S. I thought the "shitting on the Funeral" comment was funny!!! -
It's funny, I knew a guy who lived above Mooney's in 93-97. He never, ever complained about anything. In fact, he loved living above Mooney's. It's a great bar to live above. You should feel blessed.
-
I've never been, but now I must check it out before they close. So while I can't form an opinion about said institution, it's always sad when a good bar closes and from the posts I am reading here, I have no doubt that it's a cool place.
As far as obnoxious noise goes, it seems to me that most of it in PH and CH comes from parked cars and apartments as opposed to bars. But hey, maybe that's just me. -

i find all this support for this institution very amusing.... i have walked by mooney's four or five times a day for the last 5 years, living next door for the past 15 yrs.. and for the most part, there has been an average of three people inside. and the times i have stopped in for a drink, there has been less... its amazing once everyone heard of the closing they all have become Mooney's biggest fans.... maybe if your support had been there the entire time then Mooney wouldnt be in this situation... but then again, maybe i should just jump on the brooklyn gentrification bandwagon!!!...
I love mooneys too... such a sad time to see a place like this go...! woo hoo!
point being.. if you love places like this, then show your support from the beginning, and maybe that will make a diffrence in how this place changes in the next 20 yrs.... -
Thanks for the lecture, Slimmm.

I love it when someone makes broad generalizations and assumptions about a group of people with out knowing a thing about them. And then they're pompous about it too. It must be hard holding your head up with that heavy intellect.

I and a good amount of the people that have posted here, that I know personally, have frequented Mooney's for a long time. My love for the place is genuine and I've gladly spent and drank my way deep into the night there with groups of friends and family.
I'll miss that crappy ladies room. -
Does anyone know what the status of Mooney's is?
-
I was in there recently and they said they had an extension until the end of this month at least.
Howdy, Stranger!
