  • Video Edge should become a Starbucks.
  • Last I heard it was St. Patricks Day being the end.
  • I believe they actually have a court date today. So they may have an end date by the end of today...or they may just have another postponement...
  • I was there on Friday and, I must say, it looked more like Soda than the Mooney's I've known for nearly two decades. The place has two new TV's, a new computerized jukebox, and a bartender well-known to the hipsters in the area. Also, the crowd was mostly young, twenty-somethings (the old man percentage was around .0001%). Time will tell, but, to me, these are the signs of a place that plans to stay in business.
  • announcing that they're closing may have been the best business decision they've made in years... that place gets a lot more visitors these days than it used to.
  • We (wife and I) were in Mooney's about three weeks ago and the bartender/owner's son said they were staying open until "at least St. Patrick's Day" -- after that, it's up to the courts.

The TVs came in either just before or just after the eviction notice. The jukebox is provided by the same company that provided (I believe with some sort of lease arrangement) the old CD one (and apparently is intended to make more money than the old one) and the bartender on a Friday night is the owner's son. So, really, despite appearances, nothing has radically changed at Mooney's. And as much as we all wish and Mr. Mooney would love, I'm sure, to stay in business, the landlord will not permit it. We're just all waiting to hear the latest from the courts as to what the actual fate of the place is.
  • Hope to see some of you there tomorrow.
  • Actually, I erred, meaning that we were there on Saturday, so the bartender was some dude named Ben, not the owner's son. Ben said that he used to bartend at Loki and still works part-time at Freddy's. If the new TVs arrived after the eviction notice and the new jukebox is intended to earn more money, I'd say these both prove, rather than disprove, my original point.
  • i know ben. he's a guy who grew up in the neighborhood. i don't think he is a hipster or particularly beloved by hipsters. he is a good bartender. he also does not work at freddy's, although he did many years ago.

sadly, mooney's is on its last legs, although i am sure they are grateful they've made it to st paddy's day.
  • quick confirmation question - the owner mei chi is the same person that's evicting mooney's and evicted royal video, right? I am certain I read that somewhere in here but with the search function all screwy, I'm too confused to find it.

    thanks.

yeah, i had a chuckle at that ben comment. beloved by hipsters is pretty much the last thing that i would expect someone to come away with. maybe "good guy, good bartender, doesn't mind pissing people off if he needs/wants to". it seems like a lot of people just need to find things to bitch about.
  • I went after my shift tonight with some friends from work (got there around midnight). I didn't see any of you usual suspects there, but the bar was packed. It sure didn't look like the last night for Mooney's.

I am so in denial. Where else will I get a perfectly-poured Guinness, complete with shamrock in the foam?
  • Man, I tried to get in and it was TOO DAMN PACKED!
So sad too... I was looking forward to a perfectly poured Guinness.
I may have to go after work today to make up for it.
    :D
  • yes the only way to make it thru the crowd was to play the bagpipes. people scattered for that guy.
  • Subject: Ben

what can be said about Ben, the guy is a great writer, a complete asshole behind the bar but i don't dislike him. Even though i have known him for a long time he is someone i would not hang out with...Beloved by hipsters is a very strong statement, a statement that if you told him,it would probably piss him off. I remember going to Mooney's in its heyday, a place that in actually started going when i was 16, those days are gone, when it used to be the only bar around, when all the Au Pairs from Park slope would come and drink and pick us guys up, nights of complete madness, but that all changed with the gentrification of 5th ave and PH... I do miss playing darts, i miss Lee (RIP) but other than that i really think that the demise of Mooney's can't be stop. Our neighborhood has moved up in income bracket, so people don't want to hang out with a bunch of old time alcoholics, they want more high end Pizzeria's expensive restaurants and Bars. Even though i will miss it there is nothing that can be done. Next one up is Freddy's!!

P.S Saint Particks at Mooney's was a complete disapointment!!
  • Subject: New Mooney's?

If anyone knows whether Mooney's is looking to relocate please post. It's an awful shame for us to lose such a welcoming and simple bar to hang out in, always meeting the best of the boro. We all say we don't want Starbucks, but we know it will SRO if it winds up there. And did we really need Bank of America???
  • Ben himself told me that he still works part-time at Freddy's. I guess that he lied.

yeah lee was a cool guy.
  • DeeDee wrote: Ben himself told me that he still works part-time at Freddy's. I guess that he lied.
i'm guessing it was a misunderstanding. he used to work there several years ago but has not worked therefull or part time since he left for loki and then mooney's.

his green tie, given to him by shane mcgowan, was the highlight of mooney's on st paddy's day for me.
  • i hear this weekend is it for mooney's. it's really sad. there's nothing else like it, and it surely won't be replaced by something better.

Don't be so sure. I hear that Sprint has been chomping at the bit for that location. :(
  • I'll believe it when I see it. We've heard this story 3-4 times over the past year or so.
  • Well, this time you should believe it. If you go there any of the next three nights, you'll see it. Saturday is their last night.

And yeah, it's the same evil landlord that has left the old Royal Video standing gloriously empty for the last six months or so. Maybe Mooney's can move in there.
  • I know this is an old thread but I just came across this very sad news today.

I lived upstairs for about 2 years and loved it. I loved the neighborhood (miss it dearly now that I'm out here in Seattle) and am deeply saddened by this. Sure it was a dive, but it was a fixture of a great neighborhood.

And to the person who was whining about the noise - I lived there for 2 years and and had no troubles at all with it. It was actually nothing compared with the noise of the City's garbage truck backing up to the curb and slamming Mr. Mooney's trash bins up and down and then crashing them onto the sidewalk at 4am. Even with the ambient noise of Flatbush Avenue and the Jazz from the UpOver Jazz Cafe (if that's even still there), I never had a single issue. And since I was just starting a career on Wall Street at that time, I was up at 5am during the weekdays. Again, nothing in the world to complain about noise-wise.

I often wonder if the people who complain about such things while living in a huge CITY aren't originally from some elitist community in southern CA or Denver. It's sort of like the difference between "travellers" and "tourists" - "travellers" find that things are different from home and they enjoy it. "Tourists" find things different from home and complain. Go back home....more space on the train for me.

Since I'm not back there, does anyone have confirmation on what the landlord has done/is doing with the place now that Mr. Mooney is out?
  • Upover Jazz Cafe has been gone for years. Wing Wagon is still going strong though. No word on what will happen to the Mooney's space. I wouldn't cry too much for the owners of the bar...they have another location in Bay Ridge which does great business.
  • Its gone man, for us who grew up here and had our first drinks when we were teenagers at Mooney´s in the early 90´s. IT sad but tru, next up is Freddy´s!!!
  • I was at the Bay Ridge Mooney's the other day and it's just as much fun as the one on Flatbush used to be. You guys should hop on the R train and give 'em some business. Tanoreen next store is great Middle Eastern food, too.
