Is there a website that tells you --- if you put in your address --- what public school your kid would go to?

Subject: PS 9 gangs?
Big bunches of rough-looking kids, middle schoolers I guess, come down to Vanderbilt after getting out of PS9 each day. Twice groups of these kids surrounded my somewhat younger middle-school age son and harrassed him on the B65 on Bergen Street after they got on right below Vanderbilt. The other afternoon around 3:30 I went to get the bus there and a student waiting for the bus too, a girl, pointed up the groups of rough kids on the corner and said that there are gangs at the school, and that it's a dangerous place.
My question is: why aren't there cops on surrounding corners when this school lets out? -

what have school officials said when you asked this question of them?

If only to clarify, P.S. 9 and M.S. 571 are two different schools in the same building.

There is also a middle school on Sterling and Vanderbilt, that may be where the problem is emanating from. I see those kids in the morning on the way to Grand Army Plaza, and some do look like a rough bunch, rowdy and what-not.

I have a pre-k kid in PS.9 and all the times we have run into the older children in the play yard, or in the street they have been nice to my little one. -
Thanks for the clarification about two schools being in one building...obviously these kids are from the middle school that is in the PS9 building.....they are definitely not the kids from the Vanderbilt/Sterling middle school, since I saw them coming down Bergen from the direction of Underhill.....

If you notice there is usually a police car that sits on Bergen between Underhill and Vanderbilt when the kids get out. Not every day but most of the time.

The principal of this middle school is really, really trying to make the school a better place. Unfortunately there is a problem with gangs among the junior high kids. After an incident in the schoolyard there was a meeting in which a representative from the NYPD came to inform us of this. (FYI the police officer also told us that the McDonalds on Vanderbilt is a place where some of these gangs are temping the younger kids). Because of this - you can see the principal out there every morning walking a few blocks here and there and checking the McDonalds to make sure that the children come to school and are not hanging out.
I suggest you introduce yourself and talk to her about the problem you had - she is extremely approachable. -
How is PS9? My daughter may need to go there.

gosh, you make it sound like a punishment.
We've been looking at many many schools in the area for our youngest who will be entering pre-k in the fall. my (much) older kids went to 321. We've been happy overall with what we saw and heard at 9 and are planning to send our son there. -
My son went there from pre-k and graduated from 5th grade there last year. I really like the school and every year that he was there it got better and better. Many of the teachers, staff and especially the principal are extremely dedicated to the school and the children there. Last year they were talking about implementing an afterschool program run by http://www.kidsorbit.com/ this school year but since my son is no longer there I don't know much about it but I do remember it was for a very reasonable fee. They have a wonderful violin and piano program. They offer culinary arts and dance as part of your childs curriculum. I suggest you make an appointment with the parent coordinator Ms. Jacobs (who is a priceless asset to the school) and she can give you a tour as well as answer any questions you have.

The quiglet is in pre-k at p.s. 9 and loves it.
