Just moved to Washington by the Botanical Gardens; ok area?

Hi everyone-- I just moved into a big apt building on Washington Avenue directly across the street from the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. (Specifically, Washington between Crown and Montgomery.)

I was told my building is in Prospect Heights, but I'm guessing it's really in- or on the border of- either Crown Heights or Lefferts Gardens. The neighborhood is convenient and it feels safe, but I figured I'd post on here just to get the opinion of those who better know the area. Any tips?

(I did notice there are projects near Montgomery. Anybody know which ones those are?)

Thanks!

  • Welcome to the area. And no, once you cross Eastern Parkway you are no longer in Prospect Heights. That is Crown Heights going towards Lefferts Gardens from Eastern Parkway. I lived over in that area before moving to P. Heights. It is safe enough. You didn't do any research before moving? Are you from Brooklyn? Hard to gauge your sense of safety w/o knowing where you're from. If you're from East New York, yea it is really safe over there, but if you're from Beverly Hills, things are a bit different.

The Botanic Gardens are beautiful. Getting married there next year. Enjoy the Library, Gardens, Museum, and Park. You are in a great location for all 4.
  • You're not in Prospect Heights, but you're very lucky to be near the garden! I also love it there--spent a while volunteering in their building on Montgomery while I was in grad school.

Is your building the one with the very nicely kept strip of lawn around the edge on the corner of Montgomery? I often saw the supers of that building hanging out with some of the BBG guys around the corner on Montgomery. They seemed very "present," which is a good sign. The building looked pretty nice to me, though I never found myself in the neighborhood at night. Wherever you live, you'll probably feel safer at night if you figure out where the other people are and avoid walking home via deserted streets.

Do yourself a favor and buy a membership to BBG, and bundle up and go there in the winter and in bad weather in addition to when it's sunny. It's beautiful in a different way and you'll have the place to yourself.
  • kella_v, check your private messages (top of the page by profile). I sent you a message with some info about the area. It involves a coworker so I didn't want to post it here where anyone could stumble upon it. It's nothing bad, I promise! :)
  • Thanks for the responses so far. I've recently moved to the city from Pittsburgh, but I've been subletting in different Brooklyn neighborhoods since September, so I have a decent feel for various areas (especially Forte Greene, Park Slope, and Lefferts Gardens.) I definitely didn't blindly move into my new building, but there's only so much research one can do in a certain amount of time.

And, "ah ha!" I knew it wasn't in Prospect Heights.
