Park Slope Cats or any other rescue org. PLEASE HELP
I was just walking home and I noticed 2 kittens living in the lot on Bergen (closer to Vanderbilt) between the artists' studio and the home that was knocked down (not on the side of Housebroken). They look to be about 1 1/2 to 3 months old. It looks like someone has been leaving food there but the cans looked to have been empty for a day or two. I left a small can of food for them and they came close to me when I put it down. Since my home and yard are full to kitty capacity I could not take them in. It is an adorable little blondie kitty and a black and white kitty. Im hoping some one can take them in or get them adopted. Its getting pretty cold out there and I would hate to see such cute babies go through a cold winter. I think Dafodil Hardware has access to the yard there and the woman and guy that works there are really nice people. Im sure they would be adopted in a hearbeat!
PS - Mods - can we make this a sticky for a couple days? Thanks.

Since the Community Bookstore is adopting the 2 kittens I rescued, people have been asking about them constantly. When I had to bring Mumpus to work with me in my cleavage, people were always asking if he was up for adoption. I don't think it would be too difficult to find them a home just through word of mouth. I could post a flyer for them there and have the fabulous staff direct any kitten coveters to me next door. I'm at maximum capacity as well, otherwise I would take them in myself. Sweet little babies, I hope someone can help them.

Thanks Stacey for bringing this to our attention! -
I've seen two other kittens there that seem to be from the same litter--one calico and one tortie. The tortie is actually across the street, under the extension that's being built next to Housebroken. I can't tell if he/she is stuck or living under there. I tried to coax it out last night with some stinky Figaro cat food, but I only ended up with an adult tuxedo sitting with me eating all the food while the kitten meowed under the house.
I saw the calico two nights ago at the lot you're talking about Stacey. I didn't have any food, but tried to lure it over but she just ran. They're really small and I want to get them off the street. I'm going to try again tonight. Fingers crossed. -

If you need to borrow my rather large carrier, some food to lure it or a helping hand - just let me know. -
1 of 4 trapped. He/She is in my bathroom as I type and she/he is a real cutie.

If anyone can foster/adopt shim please let me know. I already have one too many in my studio apartment. She/he looks healthy (and has a healthy appetite to boot). Obviously she/he needs to be fully vetted.
I saw the black and white baby as well, this time across the street from where Stacey originally saw him, and where I saw its sibling the tortie. There's a momma (i think) there taking care of them. I couldn't catch the baby though. -
You rock!!!
That's one of the cuties I saw. He/she reminded me so much of my kitty Rocky. I will spread the word that a cute kittie is available -
Are there any vets or rescue groups in the area that help defray the costs of getting these poor little kitties up to date on testing, shots, neuter/spay, etc. I would love to help, but already have three pets of my own in my tiny apartment. The most recent is a now six-seven month old kitten that I rescued from a landlord who was about to throw her outside to fend for herself. Having just gotten her fixed, I know how expensive it is. I would love to offer a temporary home for one of these kitties until a life-long home is found. Problem being that I am a grad student and my husband is a first year med resident. Obviously, we are barely scraping by as it is. I have love and time to give, but not much money.

When I brought Grumpus (the grey kitten) to my vet, Dr. Maddon told me if I couldn't find someone to adopt him they could take him. They do kitten adoptions there, they used to just put a sign up in the window but it wasn't bringing many people in. So one of the vet techs put a big cage on the bench in the window (one of those big duplex thingies) and they adopted all the kittens out really quickly. I can call them tomorrow and ask if they've gotten anymore since then. If they haven't they could probably take them. They take applications so the kittens aren't adopted out to any person who walks in off the street.
lulu's momma, let me know if you want me to call them tomorrow. You are amazing! Mwah!

That would be great caseopele. Cheeto, as I'm calling it, is pretty freaked out. We'll have to see how feral he/she is before giving him over to your vet (don't want them stuck with a TNR kitty). Hopefully by tomorrow he/she will be a little more calm and show his/her domestic side.

oooooh....Cheeto is so cute! Good job, Lulu's Mom :-)

Cheeto is very lucky to be with you. How did you trap him? This week is going to be hell for me (I'm working tomorrow through Monday, including Thanksgiving) but I might be able to help get the others. I work from 2 or 3 to 9 tomorrow and Monday, 10-3 on Thursday, 3-9:30 Friday and Saturday, and 1-7 on Sunday. I'll be online the rest of the night until around 1am so you can PM me if you want. I'll call my vet tomorrow before I go to work.

Hi. I just spoke to my cat sitter who volunteers for a rescue organization, Slope Street Cats. Her name is Lynn, and the person who organizes rescues is named Elise. There is a website,. I'm going to go and get the e-mail address and possibly the link. Sorry, I posted quickly before I thought to do that first. Lynn said it sounds like they could do a rescue of the kittens.

Cheeto update. He's doing really well. He's been eating and pooping and peeing in the litter box. He's still pretty freaked but has let me pet his nose. I'm actually a SSC volunteer so I'm going to be taking him to Pet Haven to get tested soon and a fellow SSC volunteer is going to come over and bring some dewormer and try to get him a FVRCP vaccine. Woot! I'm going to try and go out tonight to trap with my carrier, but I won't be able to do a serious bout of trapping with a drop trap until Friday or so. Will keep you guys updated as new info comes along. Again, if anyone wants to foster or adopt this guy please let me know.
-
Wow, you are so fantastic. Good job!!!

Great. I got my two cats from an SSC rescue, a little less than a month ago. They were found in Prospect Park. So unfortunately can't foster or rescue any of these.

Cheeto is definitely not feral. He let me pick her up, put her on my lap and have some cuddle time. After a few minutes he was so comfortable he was purring and pushing his little head into my hand. Awwww! So cute. Here's a pic from today.

I think he's about 2 months old. Also, to answer caseopele's question, I caught him with my cat carrier. I put some sheba in the back and waited for him to go in and stay in before I slammed the door shut. He freaked out, but I put my jacket over the carrier and he chilled out. I'm not sure if the others are going to be as easy, but maybe. If not I can get my hands on a drop trap and try to get them that way.
Also, does anyone know the people that own the parking lots on either side of Bergen. I'd like to start a convo with them about getting access to the property in order to trap, neuter and return the rest of the colony so they don't keep spreading. -
Oh and one last thing, I think he'd do really well in a house with another cat so if you're current kitty is itching for some companionship this little dude may be a good boyfriend. I say this because I noticed when i was catching him that he was with an older cat (about 6 months) who he kept rubbing up next to. He seemed very attached to him, but I don't think they were related.

Subject: Trapping the Bergen St. Kitties
Wed. Night Update: I wasn't able to catch any other babies tonight. I think they were all too full from the food I left last night and some other cans someone else left this morning. I didn't see them at all.
It's great that we're feeding these guys, but I'm gonna ask that people refrain from leaving food Thursday night and all day Friday. I want them to be hungry by Friday night in order to coax them out and into the trap. Thanks everyone. Don't worry, I'll leave food for everyone after we trap on Friday.
Also, I wanted to ask that people who do feed these cats, please try and clean up your empty cans. This way we keep good community relations with people who live near these lots. I know there have already been complaints from neighbors about the amount of trash (aka cans) the ferals bring in. Lets try to not give these naysayers a reason to complain.
Also, Andrea from SSC and I are planning on trapping and neutering/spaying the entire colony on Bergen between Vandy and Underhill. Once we get a schedule of when we can take them to the ASPCA van I'll start a new thread so people can get info on the project. It'll be important to check this new thread as it'll give info on when we plan to trap and when to stop feeding these guys so they're hungry enough to go under the drop trap.
Does anyone know how many cats are living in the two lots on Bergen?
Can you describe them?
Are any of them already fixed?
Just want to get a sense of what we're dealing with. I've seen, two black and white guys (one is about 6 months, while the other is older), a small tabby (possibly momma to these kitties), a small gray one with a white tipped tail, any one else I'm missing?
Ok, we can do this! No more Bergen babies!!!! -
I called my vet today but the woman who handles the adoptions was busy. She's supposed to call me back but I doubt I'll hear anything until next week because of the holiday. I have to take the kittens in some time next week for their first shots and tests so I can ask then if I don't hear anything.
Is everyone good for Thanksgiving? If any of you don't have anything to do, you're welcome to come with me to my parents. We've always had friends who didn't have family in the area over for the holidays. And my stepfather is Italian so there won't be a problem with not having enough food.
Happy Thanksgiving! -
Did anyone see this posting on craigslist?

There is a mommy cat with 3 kittens hiding under my neighbors planter on St. Marks Ave between Carlton and Vanderbilt. The mom cat has a black face with white markings. I can only see her face.
If you think this is your cat please reply and i'll give you the address.
If i don't hear from anyone soon i'll call a shelter and see if they can catch them and take them. I wasn't able to lure them out of their hiding space.
In the mean time, i put out food and water for them.
Location: Prospect Heights
Could these be any of the cats from Bergen? -
I emailed the poster to see if these are the same kittens. I went out again tonight to trap and I didn't see any cats over the hour I was there... Hopefully they've got a nice warm place to hang out in.

Subject: the kittens on St. Marks
Hi. I'm the one who posted on Craigs List about the kittens i spotted. Haven't seen them since Wednesday night. And it does sound like the same ones. There was a black and white one, a sandy one, and the third i never saw but my neighbor said there were three. -
damnit, where did these little ones go! If anyone sees them please post.
Cheeto is doing great. He's such a cuddler. I'm going to post his own adoption post so people can fall in love with him and he can hopefully find a forever home. -
Here is a photo of Cheeto in his new home. It looks like he has settled in nicely! Thanks again Lulu's Momma for rescuing this little guy.
-
Yay! Another happy ending!
It looks like Cheeto found a fabulous new home and a snuggle buddy.......He's getting so big! -

I have mixed feelings about separating cats who are friends. You did a great thing but then ... it seems so sad in a way. I guess it comes with the territory. -
If his buddy was friendly I would have kept them together, but he's older (6 months) and hence already feral. This was confirmed when we recently trapped him to be neutered. Luckily now Cheeto has another buddy.
