Unsavory activity on Sterling Place

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
yesterday on Sterling b/w Underhill & Washington at 5:30 PM. I was approached by a *young* man asking what i had "in my pockets". He came from behind an SUV and was immediately in my face, trying to block my path as i walked west on Sterling. He had his hand in his sweatshirt as if to suggest that he had a weapon, though i never saw anything, and doubt that he did. When he was unable to block me, he kept walking alongside, bumping into me and telling me to empty my pockets. I tried not to break stride, spoke calmly to him and told him that he shouldn't be doing stuff like this, and when i got toward Underhill I saw other people and kept refusing and he ran off toward Washington. He looked to be no more than 15 years old, black male, 5'6" -5'8", wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a white shirt under it. He was so small and young that it was almost hard to take him seriously, but obviously that doesn't excuse it. Since i left him on the block, i called the police so that no one else on the block would be approached. They came by 20 minutes later and i gave them a description.

  • sounds similar to what happened to my friend's co-worker. she was on eastern parkway at washington and these 2 kids were saying the same thing & one of them even made a "gun" with their hand and pushed this "gun"-hand into her back. slick.
  • I hate this stuff. That sort of bs would happen when I was a teen myself and back then if I shoved the kid away and got ready to throw down, no biggie - we're both kids...

But now that I'm an adult with a job and house and wife and kids - what am I supposed to do? My instinct is to just bash the kid's head against the curb or wall a few times and walk away - but then I'm locked up for aggravated assault against a likely unarmed minor.

So what's the correct response? The other day a couple of kids on Franklin eating box chicken on their stoop at about 9:30pm. Three of them, one's a girl, they're all about 14-15. Smart alecky boy chucks a bone at my back as I walk past. I stop, turn around and ask "what the fuck are you thinking you little asshole". No response - caught him mid-chuckle. I walk away - he chucks another piece, which bounces off my shoulder. I just walk away.

I hate walking away, but what am I supposed to do?

My friends and I would have been slapped and beaten by every adult on the block if we'd pull that shit (back in the stone age of the 70's).

Seriously, anybody have any good ideas as to how to get back at little shits with little risk to myself and my property.

PS - I know this is horribly uncharitable and immature of me, particularly at the the holidays. But screw it - I know all the socially responsible answers - mentoring, speak to the children and let them know how disappointed you are, housing reform, blah-blah.

But seriously how do I make this little jerk cry?
  • Subject: Stoop punks

Call the cops ,have them taken to the station house, their parents called and be required to pick them up.
This will make these punks feel like assholes and a joke in their neighborhood.

Sometimes a simple action of this nature will wake these "kids" up.
  • why is "kids" in parenthesis?

    Because I felt like it.
  • young snitch wrote: why is "kids" in parenthesis?
    it's not in "parenthesis"

    Now you ruined the fun..(':P')
  • Subject: kick their asses

kick the asses of these little shits. They;ll be getting what they deserve.
  • Pepper spray. I just started carrying it and I feel much less intimidated knowing I could blind someone.

Be careful with that - spray against the wind and you're screwed
  • One could make some good money starting a business selling black hooded sweatshirts in size M for these lttle kids

I swear they must read the boards on their stolen iPhones and get together and say, "Hey guys, everyone dress the same and you'll never get caught."

a dog. just the sight of a dog makes kids run the other way.
  • I'm all for making these Shitheads cry, but smacking them usually ends up with an all out War. Calling the Police probably is the best idea, pepper spray is legal, but if used in any other situation then "self defense" a Felonious Assault charge might follow.
  • Let it go, unless the kids carry on with it everyday. Most kids do stupid stuff once in a while. A rare few will be that way all the time. Call the cops on those ones.
  • I was walking up Washington last night and was handed a flyer from a cop about the rise in robberies in the 77th Precinct. It listed a bunch of tips on how to avoid getting mugged. I don't have the flyer anymore (I gave it to a friend) and most of the tips were pretty obvious (don't wear your iPod while walking down the street or if you do, switch out the bright white earbuds for something "dingy" - their words not mine), but I guess that makes it official - we have a crime wave in Prospect Heights!
