Subject: Burned out Apt. on St.Mark's

Yesterday around 4/5pm, I saw the immediate aftermath of a bad fire in the building on the N/E corner of St. Mark's and Underhill. Ground floor apt looked to be in bad shape. Surprised not to see a post about it on here. Went by today, every window boarded up, looks like there was lot of damage. Hopefully no-one was hurt. Anyone know what happened?

  • I saw the same thing. I went to Gothamist and it only said 10-75 with no details.
  • dang i just pass by today didn't notice anything.
  • no one was injured...lots of smoke though. Most of damage was the smoke damage and the firefighter damage. Man, those guys go to town!
  • are you saying that the firefighters irresponsible. I didn't know that you were an expert.
  • nobody said it wasn't part of what they needed to do to fight fires (or not)
    so chill out joseph11

Firefighters *do* tend to hack up a place with those axes...I had an apt busted up once. It was a couple of floors above the fire (which was still at the small and smokey stage)
We returned home to find the door broken and the kitchen wall opened up with an ax. A neighbor put his german shepherd in the place to guard until we got home/door got fixed. The FDNY busted through and left. I wonder if that's a policy that's changed?
  • I'd like to think that Firefighters in our hood don't break things for the hell of it. Maybe they though there was fire behind your wall. Last I checked they don't have x ray vision. Also, I would hope that the firefighters do not waist their time doing security. I know there a chance I may need them and I hope 911 doesn't tell me there gonna be late do to securing an apartment. What about the men in blue??

Nothing in Pitu's post indicated that this might not be the case.

Seriously, there's no need whatsoever to be so combative.

explain this to....This isn't an attack on their professionalism

Maybe I should complain about noise not about the disrespect of our firefighters. Then someone may agree with me.
  • dude, it's a statement of fact, not an attack on the profession

Never said they didn't need to do it. I just said they go to town, meaning they attack the fire. I am not an expert, but I do know that fire can double in size very quickly. Yes, they did everything right. They swarmed that thing as a great department should!

    so relax...
  • regarding Pitu's pondering of firefighters busting down doors of adjoining buildings to battle a fire and then leaving- in this case (the recent St Mark's fire) the fire department called one of the tenants whose door was broken down and asked her to come immediately home- waiting until she arrived instead of just taking off.
  • Gut renovation
  • Sounds like Joseph 11 is a new probie or just took the test, or just very sensitive to FDNY issues.

Yes, the FDNY is one of the few professions where damaging things is an approved part of the job.

Just for informational purposes, most FDNY units now carry the infared camera to find hotspots without tearing out walls and surfaces. But its not foolproof, it's judgement.

I have personnally witnessed an occasion were FDNY broke a door that was unlocked. However, in the heat of the moment, no one is perfect.
  • I'm not sure what a probie is and no i didn't take the test, but I feel that they should not be bashed for doing their job. With all the good they do you bring up a mistake that on person made. Way to Monday morning quarterback

Seriously, Joseph11, CHILL. OUT. Nobody here is "bashing" or otherwise running down firefighters. Believe me, if people here felt negatively about any city agency or department, it would be pretty clear that's what they were saying.

I also suggest you read the site rules (available at the "READ THE RULES" link at the top of every page of the site) and try not being quite so combative and negative in your posts. I think you'll find you have much more productive conversations if you don't jump to conclusions and get so accusatory so quickly.

Didn't realize that I was being negative by sticking up for someone that doesn't have I voice in neighborhood site.

The site is accessible to the general public, dude. Anyone who cares about having a voice here can register and post. Besides, there's no need to "stick up for" people whom nobody actually bashed in the first place.
