Looking for a great vet in the slope

I am new to the ps area and am looking for a really great vet for my furry family. I have a dog and two cats. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Also, if anyone knows of any good rescue groups that could use an extra pair of hands please let me know who they are. Thanks.

  • I go to Animal Kind and I've been happy with their services so far, but I've heard it depends on which vet you go to. I go to Dr. Gibson, and he's great, but I also hear tell that he's better with cats than dogs, so ymmv.

Slope Street Cats is a local rescue organization in your area.
  • Welcome to Brooklynian. There's a ton of threads talking about the pros and cons of different vets around here. Use the Search function, or scan down this board.
Hope is another super popular vet close-by.
  • I've used both Animal Kind and Hope. I vastly prefer Hope as a day-to-day vet. Animal Kind is great for emergencies but I find them lacking in a lot of ways for day-to-day care.

    good luck!
  • Thanks for the help. I will definitely try looking through old boards. Any thoughts on PS Veterinary Care? It is really close to me and always seems to have lots of pets and their people in there. Thanks again
  • I have heard good things about Park Slope Veterinary Clinic. I also like Dr. Holloway and Dr. Silverman at Prospect Park Veterinary Clinic. Avoid Park Slope Animal Health Center on Flatbush.
  • I agree with leozoeypiper about avoiding Park Slope Animal Health Center. Years ago I brought my maine coon runt there because she was sick, they sent me home with some medication. A week later she died of kidney failure. It was over 10 years ago so I don't remember the exact details. I woke up to find her laying on the bathroom floor, not moving and very dehydrated. I rushed her to the vet on McDonald Ave and Caton, where she ended up dying. The vet there was shocked that Park Slope Animal Health Center sent her home a week earlier.

i just had a great experience at animal kind, and i feel i should report it somewhere. so, since this is the most recent vet thread....

we have a cat with a history of urinary tract crystals. normally, everything is fine, thanks to dietary changes, etc. tonight (not toDAY, mind you, when his regular vet was open, but toNIGHT), he was clearly having trouble. (the concern, for the uninitiated, is that if a cat gets completely blocked and can't pee, he can die pretty quickly.) we called animal kind, and they said to bring him in.

once there, we had to wait a while to see the vet, who was busy with another emergency. a vet tech took us to a room right away, took his temp, history, etc.

while we were waiting, he peed on the floor. we were relieved, and we also felt a little silly for coming in.

the vet arrived, saw that he had peed, and gave us the choice of skipping the $100 emergency appt. in favor of a $50 regular appt. tomorrow, since he was clearly not blocked. we chose the regular appt -- actually, we're planning to go to our regular vet*, and told her so. she used a syringe to get the de facto urine sample off the floor, transferred it to a capped tube, gave us instruction about what to tell the other vet, and sent us on our way. NO CHARGE.

i don't mean to sound cheap about my cats' health -- i'm not -- but it was really nice to not be charged a fortune for the test tube, use of the room, etc. $50 is not an inconsiderable sum to me, and even more, it was nice to feel like we weren't just walking wallets but worried pet owners. in our brief time there, everyone we dealt with seemed kind, competent, and primarily interested in our cat's well-being.

*Hope, whom we like very much.
  • Wow, sweet tea, I hope he's okay. Please let us know what happens at the vet. And I'm shocked that someone at AK did that for free! What was this nice vet's name? Although, my biggest problem with AK was with Dr. Gibson. I never saw any of the other vets, I've heard some good things about a few of them.
  • Amazed, but glad to hear that any vet would offer any type of free service to someone they didn't know. People like that are few and far between. Still, I have heard they are good for emergencies, but not so good for day to day care. I think I am going to try out PS Vet. Care/Clinic? on 5th ave around 8th st I think.
  • It's no secret I love Park Slope Vet Care, Maddon and Parker have been wonderful to my many pets over the years. I just took the kittens in for their first shots and tests, they gave me the stray discount on the exam and the tests and I got another $55 discount. But that's not the only reason I like them of course.
  • i was surprised it was free, too. i have a feeling it may have been because they knew they had their hands full with whatever the other emergency was (from the look on the vet's face, i think it must have been unusually bad/hard) and were relieved that we didn't need more attention. all the same, they could have given us little attention and still charged us plenty....

fwiw, we went to hope today and aside from a colossal wait -- it IS the weekend, and we did get a last minute appt -- everything was great. the atmosphere there helps me stop freaking out, which i appreciate. the vets and techs were lovely with the very sad boy. (actually, he came right out from his hiding spot and rubbed against the vet's legs the minute she walked in the door -- she must have some kind of cat mojo.) he's home now, with muscle relaxants and antibiotics, poor thing.

ETA: unfortunately, i've totally spaced on the AK vet's name. female, and i don't think she's pictured on the website. at hope, we saw (for the first time) dr. voulgaris.

  • Don't like Animal Kind. PPAC/Silverman and Maddon on 5th Ave.
  • Hmmm... My cat likes Dr. Gibson, and I've found that AK charges less on most things (like prescriptions) than my last vet did, who was really good. Also, it's been really easy to get a vet to speak to when I need a phone consultation.

Of course, it's probably because that since AK is a larger hospital, they can get most medications in bulk.

I'm glad you had a good experience sweettea. Hope the little one is doing better.
