Mooney's is loud — Brooklynian

Mooney's is loud

Subject: Mooney's is loud

It's mostly the bass. And in any case, there are places that have live bands and the people right above don't hear a thing. I think it's really about how much the owner cares about soundproofing. Being chronically not wealthy, I've always lived in noisy places (directly above a restaurant once), and this is by far the worst I've experienced.

And since I've been inside a couple of times, it seems plenty loud to me. Loud enough that conversation is very difficult. Of course, I've only been inside when it's really loud, when I went to ask them to lower the volume. Maybe you go at different hours.

Point being, no one with a conscience would ever tell people who live, say, next to a factory that emits pollution "S@$#% you, you chose to live here". Noise is also pollution - especially bass, which is a physical sensation, and cannot be muffled with a white noise machine (tried that), or with a good pair of earplugs (tried that). And just because I, or anyone for that matter, have monetary constraints, doesn't mean I should be subject to more pollution than wealthier people. I'm not fighting for the right to have a cup of Starbucks, guys. I just want a good night's sleep so that I can wake up in the morning to go to that thing that is called a job so that I can pay my rent.

Ooops, this was meant to be in the Mooney's thread.

  • Has Mooney's ever been cited for a noise violation? You seem familiar enough with the law to know that if you file a complaint, someone will be sent with a decibel meter to see whether the business is in violation of the law. Have you done this? Just saying a place is loud doesn't make it so. Most of the people on this board have been to Mooney's, and it actually seems (at least to me) less noisy than an average bar. If it's really so loud, where are the violations? I strongly suspect that if you actually measured the noise with a meter, it would be within permissible limits.

I'm not trying to be antagonistic. It's just that Mooney's is a beloved institution, and they do seem to generally play by the rules.
  • Seriously, Mooney's doesn't even have Bass music on the Juke.
Everytime I've been there and this is often  no one makes noise outside and inside is usually just the noise of people talking.

Have you never lived in the city before? Even the street noise outside dwarfs the noise from the bar.
  • I've lived all over the city before. Sure, New York is not quiet, and living off Flatbush, there's obviously a whole range of noise I can live with - traffic, parties, etc. But this bass is very strong and pervasive, and I feel all evening long, every evening.

And frankly, since none of you have been to my apartment, I hardly think you can be the judges of the merits of my complaints. Sitting right now on my sofa, it feels like someone's kicking it. It's an awful awful feeling and I don't wish it on anyone.

I haven't been living here that long - I was exploring my options after direct appeals seemed to not work. From what I gather, lots of people are misearble about the noise but feel helpless, because the local precinct says they don't have bass measuring equipment. (As opposed to just regular sound measuring equipment). My understanding is that since the new regulations have only been active since July, lots of precincts simply don't have the equipment necessary. And any complaint made to the police before July wouldn't have qualified because bass sounds were not covered. So my guess is they weren't violating anything then (even if they were still a menace).

I'm not spiteful, or evil, and if they are anyway closing in a few weeks, aren't going to call the police, or talk to the local board. But it is definitely an option if they stay and don't make any effort!
  • This thread strikes me as part of some weird PR campaign to smear Mooney's (though I don't know why someone would bother).

I lived about 2 mins from Mooney's for years, and was in there dozens of times, as a matter of fact always to sit and talk with a friend. I can't remember it ever being so loud that I couldn't have a conversation without much effort. :?

Hello and Good Morning once again, you purposely came to live in one of the most expensive areas of New York, and you're asking for sympathy over your "monetary contraints"? Is this a joke?
  • You know what, no. It wouldn't matter if I were a millioner or living on Social Security, I have a right not to be exposed to certain amounts of pollution. The only reason anything to do with my personal finances came up was because someone had the audacity to call me entitled. Sure, I'm entitled to sleep.

Just for the record, I am a real person. Anyone reading these threads would understand why I'm not going to give any more details.

You mean something other than a $30 analog SPL meter with A and C weighting? :?
  • MOD NOTE: let's remember to be nice.

NOT MOD NOTE: you have got to be kidding. mooney's is quiet. can you imagine living above soda??? southpaw?? please. you have a vendetta against mooney's as you've articulated in another thread (gee, double posting on one topic?!) and, really, your troubles are over with mooneys, at least, in the next week or two. so. um. stop. please.
  • Are you sure this bass isn't coming from that apartment above El Gran Castillo, from which I always hear loud, live West Indian music ?
  • wwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Why are you in one of the most expensive areas in the city if you cant afford it. If you don't like the noise, leave.
  • So is Prospect Heights really one of the most expensive parts of the city? Really? Since when? I know it's gone up, but I hadn't heard that before.

Not that I don't believe you, I'm just a little shocked.

That was my thought too. My PH place is way cheaper than tons of stuff I see listed in other boroughs/nabes.
