Ski Club? — Brooklynian

Ski Club?

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
Anyone want to start a neighborhood ski club?

I'd be interested in doing a Sunday morning ski club.

This means we would go to the same place by carpool. I'm thinking something close like hunter mountain or jim thorpe. If anyone knows a decent place that's closer (less than 2 hours away), please let me know.

Any interest?

  • Put me on the list. I may also have an occasional car that we could use. An SUV that would fit 4 plus equiptment if people pitch in for gas :-)
  • Cool! Oh, I also found that Blue Mountain near Allentown, PA has a SUNDAY NIGHT (4pm - 10pm) discount: $19 lift tickets + $21 ski rentals.

    Bad thing is...I conquered that mountain by age 14. So....I'm not sure how challenging it is. They have snow tubing too!

  • I'd be interested in joining in. I already have several trips planned for the season.
  • I plan to do a lot of trips too. last year, sadly, I was lame and did none (I blamed the lack of snow). Year before I got around 30 trips in, which was great!
    Hunter and Windom are "good" and close. Mountain Creek is also "good" and close.
    I've done some in PA/CT/MA, all we're small but it was still a fun trip.

    I plan to get to vermont a few times too.
  • I'm heading out after work on Dec. 7th for the weekend in Stratton with one of the ski groups I'm a part of.

    They do offer day trips to Windham, but I would need to refer you to them as their membership has grown to over 1000 and only accept new members referred by current members.

    Their planned trips are all on Saturdays, membership is $15 a year for:

    Dec 15 - $32 includes lift tix, ski/snowboard lesson, lunch
    Dec 29 - $46 includes lift tix, ski/snowboard lesson, lunch
    Feb 9 - $46 includes lift tix, ski/snowboard lesson, lunch
    Mar 22 - $32 includes lift tix, ski/snowboard lesson, lunch

    Ski/boots/poles or snowboard/boots is $23.
  • What transportation does this ski group use? Carpooling?

    I'd be interested in Dec 29th for sure...but are those the only 4 dates?

    Oh, so, I'm going on Sunday at 2pm to Blue Mountain in PA. Leaving from Prospect Heights. It's night skiing. Let me know if you want to go.

    I have a car with 2 seats left, but it's rear wheel drive...which gave me problems in the Berkshires. I hope to do some boarding from 4pm - 8pm on Sunday and be back in Brooklyn by 10pm.

    So, gas and toll split gets you a seat in the car. I may be going on Saturday night too, but I'm not sure which mountain or if I'm even going for sure.

    :)

  • Those are the one-day trips. They also have weekend trips to Stratton, Killington and Okemo. These are all carpooling trips.

    Other trips they offer are one week trips, this year, they are to Aspen/Snowmass, Steamboat Springs, Sugarloaf, and 3 Vallees. Sugarloaf is a carpool trip since it's in Maine.

    Including the Stratton trip in two weeks, I'm also signed up with them for the Aspen/Snowmass and Steamboat Springs trips.

    Mountains to consider that are "nearby" which I've gone to would be:

    - Hunter
    - Windham
    - Belleayre
    - Plattakill
    - Mountain Creek
    - Camelback
  • Under, how do your ski trips get to the mountain? Do they rent coach buses or do people car pool? I am 100% down for under 3 hour day runs.
  • For weekend and day trips, it's strictly carpooling. I always hitch a ride with buddies who also sign up for the trips.
  • count me in. i have car and van :). van sits just another person but if you guys dont mind sitting on the floors lol it would fit like ton of people that or put a sofa in there and be fine.

    car sits only 3 besides myself. i would prefer to goto close by place and snowboard for a few hours :).

    i could do this like once a while. weekends are my bread and butter for moving items.
  • Has anyone been to Windham? I wonder if the trails are good or not.

    Any opinions?
  • I like Windham, sure it's smaller than Hunter, but it doesn't get the rush of crowds that Hunter gets. Plus, Windham is only 15 minutes away from Hunter.

    Windham is definitely better than Mountain Creek, unless you are into the parks, jumps, jibs....

  • If anyone wants to go on the 29th, PM me and I'll forward your info as a referral to the ski group that's offering the trip. I can't go on the 29th, it's our 4th anniversary and can't say "honey, I'm going skiing instead of celebrating our anniversary..."
  • i'm game! i'm hitting up VT for a week on dec 7 and then have a few other trips planned this winter but would def be interested in joining for some day trips....
  • Also, I can get discounts through work for the following mountains, just gotta order them in advance and pay for shipping. Some are $5 off lift tix, others are as much as $30 off.

    agreed. I went a lot a few years ago since it is so easy to get to and not super crowded. It's worth it but not super challenging, but it was super fun.
  • Okay. I'm going to Hunter Mountain this Sunday. If anyone else wants to come, they only have about 1/3 of the trails open...mostly the ones on Hunter One. I think you can get to the top of Hunter Mountain, but they only have like one trail open up there. So...it will be another week to two weeks before they're in full swing. I'm going to try to get a lift ticket discount since not all of the lifts are open!

    My next planned trip is Dec 14th for Night Skiing at Blue Mountain. It's not a super hard mountain, but it's super cheap and very close.

    that's a good plan. Waht's your approach? Let us know if it works.

    Also, on a side note, if you search craigslist for ski club, or ski partners, or any such variation, you get an entirely different experience. You still have snow though :wink:
  • Say! Anyone here interested in 1/2 share in Killington? We share a 3 BR slopeside condo for the season. We have 2BR counted for, and the other is doing a 1/2 share. We need someone to take the room the opposite weekends (dates negotiable).

    We're all over 30, so we are not a big party house. This is much more sedate than the usual shares. Price is $1500 and you get a queen sized bed -- no bunkbeds.

    This is Ski-on Ski-off when Stage 1 Skyship is operating which is about 1/2 the season. Otherwise it's a 5 min drive to Bear.

    PM if you're interested.
  • Well, I'm going to break it down for them in terms of ratio of open to close trails and lifts. I know that they have early season and late season discounts...and since I spoke to them today and most of the trails on the big mountain are not going to be open this weekend, they should offer a discount.

    So, I'll assign value to each of the trails:
    beginner = 3 pts
    intermediate = 2 pts
    advanced = 1 pt
    lifts = 5 pts

    since that's the approximate distribution of skiers. Now, on a day when all trails are open, let's say they charge $100 for a lift ticket.

    if the mountain consists of 10 advanced trails, 1 of which is open...25 intermediate trails, 12 of which are open, and 15 beginner trails, all of which are open...and they only have to operate 4 out of 10 lifts to serve those 28 trails, then collectively they accumulate:

    4 x 5 + 1 x 1 + 12 x 2 + 12 x 3 = 81 points out of a possible 155 (52%), therefore, I should only pay 52% of the regular lift ticket price. :)

    You think they'll go for that?

    WOW I've not seen such a complex word problem since the GREs! They just might go for it, or just give in when they can't figure out what you're talking about ;-)
  • by the way, I just read your equation to my girlfriend and she must have laughed for ten minutes and said it was way cool that you came up with that.
  • I completely forgot to ask for a discount on my ticket!!!! Can you believe it?

    Anyway...hunter mountain this weekend was really fun. I went with about 7 people. 3 of us left Prospect Heights at 10am, the other 4 left at 11:30 or so, and we had a really fantastic time.

    The slopes were not crowded (but I'm sure it's only a week or two before that changes). The people were helpful (as usual)....I haven't been to hunter since they opened the new building! Everything was fun. We stopped for dinner at Pancho Villa's in the town about 15 mins south of the mountain and it was just a great time.

    I think we're going to try to go to Windham for night skiing on Friday, Dec 14th. I'm not sure though. Depends on the weather and other things.

    Now...here's the bad part....on the way back, a pebble from a truck hit my car and cracked my windshield from one end to the other. I have to get a new windshield tomorrow.... $309.99. My insurance doesn't cover it because the crack is so big. :(

    Other than that....a totally fun time.

    I may become an advocate for truck only lanes. I'm tired of paying for the damages they cause to my car!
