Public transport to Newark Airport? — Brooklynian

Public transport to Newark Airport?

I'm heading to Newark Airport on Saturday for a 3pm international flight. I hear that taking NJ Transit from Penn Station is the best way to go. Has anyone ever done this? There's a 12:07 NJT that gets into the Newark Airport Station at 12:30. Does anyone have any idea how long the AirTrain will take? Is this enough time or should I take the 11:14 train instead?

As you may have noticed, I'm a little nervous about my trip...

  • I've done it a number of times and it's pretty quick and painless (and sure beats sitting in tunnel traffic). The AirTrain will get you to the terminal in less than 10 minutes... be sure to keep your NJT ticket since you'll need it to get on the AirTrain.
  • I would also recommend taking the airport bus from Port Authority. It's more frequent, every 15-30 minutes, and gets you to Newark in 30 minutes.

I used to take the NJT to Newark, but last few trips have found the bus to be more convienent and about the same price.
  • International flight=hours and hours of travel, yes?
Consider a car service...I've done this trip via car service dozens of times. Always shorter (35-45 min) than I expect and sure beats 1.5 hours of travel before sitting on a plane for several hours.

Fortunately for me the trip was expensed....i am curious how much it'd cost to get to Newark from PH...is it's $50 it's worth it.
  • Yes, many hours of travel - 16 hour flight to Hong Kong. I'm on a budget but traveling with three others, so I'm open to taking a cab, but I'm worried about traffic.

Anyone ever done this on a Saturday morning/afternoon? How's the traffic in NJ around then?
  • I'm a huge fan of the NJ transit to Newark to airtrain. It's like 15 minutes on the actual NJ transit train, then up the stairs, and 5 min on the Airtrain. So easy. I actually like it so much I prefer doing that than flying out of JFK or LGA.
  • Forget the cab. A car service w/ three people is the way to go.
16 hours in the air! Yes, the NJ transit + AirTrain is indeed easy, but do you want to lug your bags onto subway, then onto NJ Transit, then onto monorail? Ugh.
  • NJ transit to the airplane to Continental terminal took me 40 minutes en toto last week. Easy, comfortable, blah blah blah
  • if you want to go nearly the free route. go take ikea bus on weekend to ikea, hire locale car service take you to air port. air port is right next door to ikea :).
  • once you hit three people, the cost is not worth it. take car service, at that time the traffic wont be bad.
  • Thanks everyone for the tips!
