New Thai on Washington / St. Marks - Udom - NOW OPEN! — Brooklynian

New Thai on Washington / St. Marks - Udom - NOW OPEN!

hi everyone -

coming home in the snow tonight, noticed the thai restaurant on the corner was OPEN! so i went in for a chat and a take out order. there are 2 partners - one is named Q (pronounced like the letter but probably not spelled that way) - she said she used to own another thai restaurant but she and her partner split and now she has a new partner and their grand opening is today!

they were still putting up speakers and the sign isn't even up on the outside, and another guy there told me their liquor license is in process, about a month away (so BYOB for now) but they're super nice and currently have a 20% off eat in and 10% off take out special.

anyway, there are menus outside, but if you guys get hungry in the snow and want to try it....

  • Damn, I already made dinner for tonight.

I'm definitely ordering from them tomorrow!
  • well....how was the pad Thai?
  • I just ordered from them (with no menu, but they were nice about making recommendations over the phone). I'll report back after dinner on:
    Pad Kee Mao (with beef)
    Panang Curry (with chicken)
    Udom Basil (with squid)

    Can't wait...
  • carni you died of food poisoning? or it was good :P that you had a itis and went to sleep lol.
  • It was about in the same league as most of the Park Slope Thai places, maybe a bit better than Lemongrass, for example. The delivery person was extremely nice and proud of his restaurant (albeit perplexed about how I could possibly have heard about it). The Udom Basil with squid was very flavorful, and lived up to it's name with a lot of basil. Surprisingly for delivery, the squid was tender. The Pad Kee Mao was not spicy enough and a little too sweet, and the beef was somewhat tough, but the overall flavor of the noodles was nice. The Penang curry chicken was also a bit too sweet and not spicy enough, but at least wasn't the cornstarchy glop that a lot of the local places are dishing up. The chicken was also a little dry.
So overall, I'm glad to have a local Thai option for when I need a Thai fix. It's certainly no Sripraphai, but it's no worse than the Park Slope options, and since I'd rather support a place on Washington, I'll definitely order from them again in the future. Also, they did just open, and the food may get better once they get things fully ironed out. One other factor: it's cheaper than the Park Slope places. The Udom Basil was the most expensive item at $12. The other dishes were $8. The non-noodle dishes came with small containers of jasmine rice. And for now, there's a 10% discount on delivery (20% on eat-in).
  • Boyfriend and I got takeaway from Udom last night, and I’m going to agree with Carnivore—food was perfectly good but not awesome, staff was extremely nice (especially the delivery guy, who was sitting at the counter while I waited for my noodles), it was pretty cheap for how much they gave us, and it’s fantastic to have thai so close by (1 block away!).

My only compaint was that things weren't very spicy--guess I'll just have to ask them to let 'er rip with the chilis next time. :)

All things considered, a very happy addition to the neighborhood--welcome, Udom!

(also, I too lucked out with the unusually-tender-for-takeout squid--yum!)
  • Nothing spells gentrification like Thai restaurants. I cant wait to try it myself.
  • ah! so great that all of you tried it! sorry for the delay in getting back - i haven't logged on in a minute... my pad thai that first night was just fine. i was starving, so that made it even more delicious, but pretty much exactly how you're all describing. could have used a little kick, but was totally warm and fresh and delicious enough for take-out on my corner on a snowday. talking to them the other night, they were all so proud of the new restaurant, and i actually told them about the message board, so i'm hoping they eventually come on and read it. i don't think they thought i'd post ALL of their info though so people could order immediately!

    :)

i think it's awesome that we're all welcoming them to the 'hood. i'll probably order something else from them this weekend, see how that goes. and yes, i agree, totally inexpensive!

ps - i was on the 65 bus yesterday morning and i swear a girl standing next to me quoted my first post word for word to a girl she was talking to. even as much as "the signs aren't even up yet, but..." so funny. word travels fast!
  • We ordered from them last night, and yeah, the sentiment is pretty much the same - we thought that it was better than Mango, the delivery guy was super nice and the prices were good.

I had the noodles with basil (I forget the actual name) and chicken - good flavor, I thought that it could have been a little more spicy, but it was still better than any of the noodle dishes that I've had at Mango. The wife had the sauteed sweet and sour dish, said that it was solidly better than the similar dish at Mango, but that the rice was slightly undercooked. Overall, very solid on their second day of business.
  • in hindsight, i'm realizing since this is on the crown heights side of washington, maybe it should get a linky in the crown heights forum too?

    mods - your call, thanks!
  • Went there and picked up dinner last night. What everyone else said. I'll be back.
  • re: Gentrification:

Once you get Thai, you never go back....

Woohooo! Just got a menu at my door today.
FINALLY! Washington Avenue, welcome to the new world of pple who want more than Chinese takeout and pizza!

    Thai in PH B*yaatch!

Lemongrass in PS, the heck with you for not delivering here - even though you are closer than Mango in PS (across the street). We can finally start patronizing our own mediocre PH Thai place.

    Trying them tomorrow night!
    Hope they are decent.

I'm always happy when PS loses a little business to PH.
    Can't explain why.

Great idea! I just posted a link to this thread on the CH board to let anyone who only reads that board know about it.

I stopped in on Thursday evening and got takeout. Like others have said, what I had (chicken panang curry) was yummy, and fresh, and the interior of the place is cute. The staff was super-nice as well. It's good to have yet another option in the neighborhood, and they have a pretty extensive menu so it'll be fun to check out some of their other offerings. Yay!

See.....It's this little street called Flatbush.....
  • I can confidently report that this place has the best Thai-style food within a 2 block radius of my home. Also, the adhesive tape around the doors adds a certain authenticity to the decor, as does the almost-chipmunk tinkly Christmas muzak they were playing this evening.
  • are they thai or chinese?

Yea, but that's 2 full avenues away from me and a 15 minute walk to boot...and I still have to actually mingle with PSlopers their strollers and yuppie larvae.

This place is is actually "in" my hood and they deliver to my door.

So more accurately, I should have said, I'm happy when PSlopers lose a little business to PH. I had no choice but to go to PS for Thai for the last 3 years - until this week. Park Slope never comes in to the equation. the more that happens, the more I like it.

Its about time CH had some more Thai love too.

Chinese Thai is the new Chinese Mexican.

I hear you, totally. PSlopers, although nice people all around, have had it really good for many years. I feel like those of us on this side of the Flat Bush Av appreciate the growth and new commerce more than the jaded-"what-ANOTHER-Thai-place-on-7th Av"-Slopers.

And while I'm very pleased this new place is in PH, especially on Washington Ave which so desperately needs more dining options, it's still a bit of a trek for those of us on the south side of the parkway. Long walk is even longer in cold weather...

Yeah, but there are LOTS more places on Washington closer to Eastern Parkway (Teddy's, The Islands, Cafe Shane, Tom's, etc.) than we have over closer to Atlantic!

Anyway, I'm just glad to see something new on Washington. :)
  • ok- you have a point....but you have SUSHI. ;)
  • There are a couple of other restaraunts coming soon to Washington as well and also on the closer to Atlantic end. The reality is that you have a lot of new construction betweeen Atlantic on the north, St. Marks on the South, Washington to the West, and Classon to the East...I think like 16 new "luxury" buildings. You can't have all of these high-priced condos and no restaraunts and amenities. I'm hoping for a nice drycleaner to come. I wish the people from Caree on Park and Vanderbilt would open there.
  • oooh what restaurants and where? any specific info?
  • Subject: Udom is Good

I just had Udom deliver. They were more than happy to bring us delivery to New York and St. John's. And it was delicious! They know how to do a good pad thai. Better than many pad thais I've had in the city.
  • I have to preface this post with the sentiments that we are THRILLED to have a new take-out/dine-in spot close to the crib....that said;

Roomie and I just got our take-out.
It took an hour- but they called to tell us the delivery guy (wow- he really is as nice as they say!) got mixed up----he blamed it on the computer...

Pad Thai was awful. I really can't believe my fellow posters comments that it's good. However! Maybe I've been eating jacked up pad thai this whole time???

We DIDN'T get the curry puffs that we ordered but did get a side of plain white rice.

I ordered the grass noodles with chicken---we got chicken fried rice, which I have to say was awesome, but for $7?

Delivery guy told us that due to the lateness he was only charging us half- which Roomie told him to not worry about it, we were just happy he was there. We countered this with a substantial tip. (like they say- he was just so damn NICE)

Roomie called them once we inspected the contents- they were super nice and super apologetic, and since it was past closing time (at that point) we insisted they not worry about fixing the problem then and there. They took his number and the next time we call our puffs and grass noodles will be on the house.

We'll order from there again (not because of the freebie)- I'm really pulling for them, and I really think that maybe the buzz has gotten around and its very well possible that they were slammed tonight. The woman on the phone mentioned that tonight was their Grand Opening and that the order was 10% (initially) off.

So, did any of you go there tonight? Was it crazy busy?
  • we did take out the other night and it was good
    not over the top fantastic
    but good
(and i did a stint as a hostess in a top thai restaurant so i have a clue)

the place is inviting and pretty
and a great addition to the neighborhood
sometimes i just want curry and i am happy they are here
  • 'Grass' noodle is a cool misspelling, isn't it
  • Funny you should mention that- I thought so too, but the menu stated GRASS noodles.
  • we ate in last night, and i'll join the chorus of "it was okay"s.

the good: attentive, sweet waitstaff. both appetizers: fried spring rolls and steamed chicken/shrimp dumplings with a peanut dipping sauce (especially the dumplings). squid. location.

the not so good: all 3 entrees' cloying sauces. (we had green curry, "spicy"(HA) basil noodles, and pad thai.)

i think we may consider making a meal of appetizers next time.
