rotating plastic

hey folks, i haven't posted on any of these boards in almost a year, in which time i flitted from crown heights to clinton hill and finally to prospect heights. now that i'm slightly more settled and organized, i'm sitting on this mountain of records and holding 2 needles wondering, should i try to DJ somewhere?

so here's the question: are there any bars around that seem apathetic enough to risk their weeknight clientele with an unproven bar DJ? i have experience in college radio, DJing college events, and DJing between sets at the knitting factory, but i've never done the DJ set at a bar thing. i feel like a neighborhood noob asking this, but i could live here for years and still not know what bars are good, since i'm more of a private-time-with-a-bottle-of-whiskey-in-my-own-living-room type.

  • okay my question was a little complicated and self-serving, huh? how bout this: what bars around here, if any, have real live people DJing?

and if that doesn't work, does someone just want to link this newb to a previous thread on bars?

has there been plan b chatter yet?

maybe i should post about the time i was MUGGED FOR MY RECORDS!*

    * = (never really happened, sorry for pokin fun)
  • ripple has djing, i understand.

    perhaps LeeHo could weigh in....
  • Ripple and Soda. The folks who own Ripple are actually really cool about giving people a shot to spin- at least the last time I was there. You know, like on a Monday or Tuesday- at least until you've proved yourself. Not for nothing though, I'd suggest something a little more edgy, say, DJ-ing in one of the Vandy clothing stores or that liquor store across from the bike shop...something like that. That is, if you have all the equipment necessary to just walk-in and set up shop in the corner.
  • and don't forget the noona lounge - they also have live DJs.

    good luck!
  • You might want to subtitle your post
    "Where Can I DJ?"

    yes, it's less poetic.
    but more communicative.

don't nana, long tan, and patio lounge on fifth ave in the slope all have djs on occasion?

    what kinda music?

i have a few boxes of r&b/soul 45's, but i have a pretty eclectic collection beyond that. like, the same set could include some howard tate, kim fowley's "motorboat", orange juice, and linton kwesi johnson.
