NY Insurance — Brooklynian

NY Insurance

I'm the poor sap whose car was totaled by a hit and run driver on Park and Classon. So i have got myself a new ride, and I'm gonna do it all right this time. I have been riding around with MA plates and Insurance for about 2 years now. Any suggestions for a good NY insurance company? Not only good rates, but great customer service. The MA insurance i had was such a headache to deal with that i'm hoping to find someone who will work with me instead of telling me how it is!
Thanks!

We opted for the cheapest insurance that we could find... Geico. When it comes to customer service, you tend to get what you pay for. Unfortunatly, the rates in our neighborhood are some of the highest in the nation.

The service at Geico has been fair. Our car was broken into twice, the first time they took care of it right away, second time has been a different story. I think they have so many new customers, they have issues handling their exisiting clients. They have been very nice to deal with both in person and on the phone.

    Good luck
  • Thanks!

I did find that Geico had the best rates i could find. Just figured i'd ask to see what others had to say.

I too use Geico which I really like. Thank goodness I have never had to file a claim yet but their online site is really easy to use. We purchased their umbrella policy also which was pretty reasonable.

I have heard good things about Allstate but I think the price is based upon a credit check or they run a credit check before they take you on as a customer.

The only insurance company I think that may beat Geico's prices (if that is your main concern) is TSC Direct but you must not have any accidents or moving violations within the last 3-4 years.
  • I've used State Farm for about 10yrs now. They aren't the cheapest, but I've stayed with them due to 1) the great service I've gotten from two of their agents and 2) I get a discount with the combination of homeowners and car insurance which offsets the slightly higher car insurance.

I've used both Rodney Shannon and Alan Wheeler as agents and really liked both guys. They've been responsive when I needed them and are willing to answer questions and give prompt service. Rodney is in Bed-Stuy and Alan is the PH/PS agent. You can look them up on the State Farm website.
  • Another Geico user here.
  • I have had excellent service for more than 20 years with a Mass. based insurance company called Electric Insurance.

Superior customer service, quick claims adjustments, fair rates.
    Never a problem.
  • Geico for me. Allstate ripped me off for years (not telling me that new programs were signifcantly cheaper). The rates are actaully similar (my friend switched to Allstate from Geico for the same reason I switched from Allstate to Geico!). The service has been good for my coworker who has filed two claims so far. One was for hit and run bumper damage, the other for a break-in.
  • StateFarm For me. Also have homeowners policy from them.
  • FWIW I had a claim with Geico two years ago, and it was handled very smoothly--a combination of online communications plus a repair shop with whom they had a direct vendor relationship.
  • you've now gone back years on posts just to copy and paste the same thing in each thread.
  • someone (named "now!") posted a copied and pasted thing about insurance they were selling on this thread and on a number of others. apparently it is now deleted.

Ditto here. In fact, I was so overcharged with Allstate that when I moved here from rural PA (a much cheaper place to insure!) and swtiched to Geico, it was still significantly cheaper. Imagine what I could've saved I had it when I lived in the sticks...
  • NY has cheap insurance in some instances because of what is covered.

    ...the fine print.

So, you may have gotten more coverage in PA for more money.
  • Do any companies give a discount if you park your car in a garage (like lease a space)?
  • For the little more you pay in your Geico premium I suggest the full glass coverage. I have had the window of my car broken 3 times and a cracked windshield. They send someone to you and repair it right away.
  • I insure with a smallish company based in RI called Amica. When I got my car (as a new driver) a few years ago I checked the NYS website and at the time they came out highest on the customer satisfaction survey on there. They were also cheaper at that time for a new driver. I have never made any claims, but on the couple of occasions I have had to deal with them for other stuff their customer service has been pleasant. The reps give you their name and extension so you can reach the same person again.
  • your in trouble brooklyn has the highest insurance rates in the country because the dense population of people around the city. its best to get a friend who's address is further out in brooklyn or queens and use their address to make it easy with insurance in the city
