Long Island City at night...safe? — Brooklynian

Long Island City at night...safe?

I have a new job (w00t!) but have to do some classes for certifications first. The only class option I have now has some night sessions in LIC (21st St at 44th Ave)...what are opinions on this area? On Google streetview, it looks like an industrial area (ie, not many people around) which gives me the creeps at night. Should I tell work they need to pay for me to get a car home?

p.s. If anyone knows of an initial Project Monitor class this month that isn't listed on the state list, let me know:)

  • Ask for a car. I don't know that specific street intersection, but I have walked in some of those industrial areas in the day time and they were very isolated.

Lots of foot traffic near the Citi building, but you don't have to go far to feel alone and nervous.
  • Thanks!

Just emailed them about it. The job is weird b/c it's a company based in Arkansas and Texas so it's hard to explain this kind of stuff to them. I'm their only NYC-based employee (knew somebody at the company).
  • That area is not really safe. If you're near the subway, you'll be all right, but otherwise...

You're near the projects and Queensborough plaza. That area freaks me out during the DAY.
  • Hmm..well my first class is Saturday at 8 am. We'll see what I think then. If even one person doesn't show up, they are going to cancel the class :/ (Why don't they just get credit card info and charge people that confirm whether or not they show up??)

My new boss is great and said they will pay for a car if I want to take one and that I can just wait for another class if the car isn't enough to make me feel safe. "I don't want you do go if you are at all concerned about your safety." And he meant it. It's so nice to have a great boss :)
  • only safe area in lic is near the vernon stop.
  • follow-up from this weekend:

there are no damn car services in the area! The people that run the classes gave me some numbers and the BEST I could get was a 20 minute wait, and when it was freaking cold yesterday I was not standing on that creepy corner for that long. It also seems to be where yellow cabs go to die, or at least for off-duty time. I eventually found a guy who was willing take me to Brooklyn as I made my way to the trains but he obviously had no idea how to get around the area we were in. (luckily he had a gps system) Sunday night nothing, and I ended up on the 7 train to 42nd ST. Nobody wanted to come to LIC.

As for the class, let me vent. The teacher actually said stuff like, "If you smell something stinkin' in here......it's me." dramatic pause "Cause I'm the SHIT." And there was an abundance of sexual jokes and profanity. I understand I was in a class full of men, mostly in construction but I expected a little more professionalism out of the teacher.
  • what kind of class was it?

that whole experience sounds terrible. in addition to the car service b.s., I mean, which is horrid enough.
  • wow. I can't believe the teacher said that - male construction workers or not.

I'm not sure what you do and why you had to take that class, but that's not acceptable. I'd call the school's Dean/administration and let them know.
  • It's a side training for work on a construction site with asbestos. I have to get certified to make sure the work is being done to code in regards to the asbestos. I work for an environmental safety monitoring company--air quality testing is our main thing. They don't usually do construction sites so everyone had to get this training and I'm the last one.

I'm used to working in male dominated labs, so I can roll with most of this stuff but I expected more of the teacher. After doing something uncalled for I gave him quite a look and he apologized several times and then said it was inappropriate. I said, "Well it's not the first time you've been inappropriate today" and that scared him! Mind you, this guy actually gives me the creeps and is an obvious BS-pro, which I loathe.

He toned it down a little after that but there were still some "spit or swallow" jokes to be done along with some bizarre "joke" that ended with a cross (did he think I was a sweet little christian girl who would adore him for this pro-jesus paper trick?).

Mostly I'm annoyed at the waste of time now--it's supposed to be a 40 hour class, but of the first two 8 hours days, we've spent more time on "breaks" and lunch and what I call story time than on subject. I wish we could just finish early and go home.

The owner of the school obviously likes the teacher and has been using him for 15+ years but I think I'll try to find the time to write him a letter or just talk to him (the owner) at the end. I'm all for talking to people about a problem, but this teacher is a large creepy man and I'd rather just get it over with for now and avoid any one-on-one with him.
  • If this were not the only class (at any company in the NYC area) being offered right now I would have left within the first hour, but I can't go on the job site and won't be paid until I have this license. There are tons of class options starting the second week in January but that's a couple of pay checks away :)

i used to work for them :p. haha i walk out of the place and never came back. place sucks but i think they still offer classes.
  • OQ - I work in LIC. While I wouldn't loll around for extended periods at the intersection you describe, I wouldn't worry too hard either. You're within seven blocks of five subway stations there - so maybe that's a better option than a car anyway?

I've never taken a car service from there, but if that's what you prefer to do, walking over to the bars on Vernon Blvd. might be a good option - I'm fairly willing to bet they'd know which car services were the good ones.
