Rough, rough month for LeeHo. There is a lot of violence on the streets these days. I have to say it is due to the influx of residents with a lot of money. By violence, I mean violence towards strangers, towards people just hanging out or going home. Just fucking walking. That hasn't always been the case out here in Crown/Prospect Heights. I know all of the guys on my corner, by real names, not pseudonyms, I get my haircut at Shorti's, I taught public school and now teach community college, so my rapport has been great out here. So, big bad, Washington Avenue and Crown Heights is no threat, but I go out on fucking "civilized" Vanderbilt Avenue and get sucker punched in the face! I did kinda fight back, but the point is that it was violent and random. Random is the key and operative adjective here. I feel bad, like shit actually, because I have loved this neighborhood, this side of Flatbush since choosing to live here. But these random attacks are just stupid. I'm a big guy. 6'1" and 230, and still get fucking sucker-punched on a weeknight? Makes no sense to me.

Washington Ave is fine, but whatever is going on away from here towards Flatbush is just whack.

I'm well aware I've set myself up for the usual "get the fuck outta here" rant, but I am truly taken aback by some shit going on in Prospect Heights. I think I have proved by most of my posts I am not one to over-react about shit, but, I'm surprised by how bad it has gotten

    this could be a death throes of a changing neighbor hood and those thugs feel the need to act out before it changes beyond their liking.

    Our sewer line is backing up. We're in it deep......Anyone else around here having this problem?

    Had it snaked several times with no benefit, city insists it's not the main line.

    So I just want to check -- anyone else suffering the same problem?

    I'm up and down vanderbilt 2 or 3 times per week, at night. I have to say that this surprises me, because I've seen no trouble or incidents at all. Was the perp alone? In a large grou? Old, young? What should we be looking for here?

    also, I remember from a separate post re: increasing violence that the mcdonalds at vanderbilt & atlantic is where a lot of gang kids hang out and recruit others, so I'm not surprised that there's violence on and slightly off of vanderbilt. wish it weren't so.

    takes a set of stones to attack someone who's 6'1' and 230. Or just total desperation/stupidity/batshit craziness. And i am glad that you're not blaming yourself for the attack and rightly pissed off.

    I'd like to know what time, etc, where on Vanderbilt this occurred. again, sorry that this has happened to you.

    Ugh, that sucks. Hope you are OK. My 6'2" brother got mugged (in PS) a year or so ago, so... yeah. It's not just happening to you. Er, not that that makes it suck any less.

    I am gonna be politely persnickety about one line in your post though, just because it's a theme that comes up a lot... I think the new residents you speak of are perceived as having "a lot" money... though they don't necessarily. Yeah rents are going up, but that means more income goes to rent and less to other stuff... or at least that's the way it works for my wallet. :wink:

    Coming from someone who grew up knowing more than one stick-up kid and predator in general, I can tell you that size has pretty much nothing to do with anything when it comes to who or who not to victimize. :idea:

    LeeHo, VERY glad you're okay. I too would be interested in reading more details about what happened, but if you're not comfortable getting into that, I totally understand.

    This is so different from the usual muggings that have apparently been happening so much lately, both in terms of the assault and that it happened as far west as Vanderbilt. It's pretty startling. And SO flat-out messed up. I'm sorry this happened to you.

    Let me clarify, it wasn't even a mugging. Nothing was taken from me, it was just a fucked up sucker punch for no reason. It was just straight up violence for violence's sake. Very, very weird.

    Just last week a couple of younger skaters I know from Park Slope got into it with a group of hoodlum type guys in the Arab deli on Flatbush right above the Q, after one of the guys sucker-slapped the kid and demanded that he buy him food, right in the middle of the store.

    The problem is simply like my friend puts it, "There's no tough white people left here anymore." Back in the day when kids would come from the other side of the park to Park Slope to steal bikes, we had crews that would take care of them. And now what? Now we've got people getting victimized in the streets and attackers with no fear of repercussion. It's only going to get worse from here.

    i have to agree with restless native. when i got jumped or some of my friends did by kids from the neighborhood or other neighborhood for no reason at all. you grab a whole bunch of friends and go after them and beat the snot of out of them. they usually don't come back around.

    edit: in this pc world. we took those kids aside and talk about how violence doesn't solved a thing. after a long talk and make sure they know, we know where they lived. they won't bring more friends to talk to us.

    usually those kids don't understand anything but sheer brutal force.

    In a similar, but less violent, episode... I was about to walk into the Chase bank on Flatbush betwewen Sterling and Grand Army Plaza a week ago or so, around 3pm on a weekday. And some young punk spit in my face as I walked by! I turned and looked at him, and he didn't even look back. Just an angry, random spit in my face. There are definitely some misguided young mutherfuckers running around the neighborhood nowadays.

    While the quote "There's no tough white people left here anymore" sounds like the title of a Norman Mailer novel, it's the absolute truth ,as well as the rest of Restless's statement on things probably getting worse in the future.
    I feel the newer generation has not been tested and will be preceived to be weak and taken advantaged of by low life bullys that need 5 or 6 in a group to rob and intimidate them.

    You have to be aware.!

    This is just a bunch of online BS. The stats don't support your suggestion that white people are being targeted. AND, it's highly doubtful that anyone would describe LeeHo as someone who might be perceived as weak, and yet he was randomly beaten. Point is, attacks are random and contrary to what you guys imply here - based on stats, blacks are still much more likely to be crime victims than whites.

    Nobody ever said whites were being victimized more than blacks (although I heartily doubt anyone is walking around Crown Heights or Flatbush spitting in black guys' faces, wouldn't last very long). All we're saying is that it didn't used to be the case that whites were victimized just for the sake of violence or humiliation.

    People got robbed back in the day, of course, but punched for no reason? Maybe, but the guy had better not try to come back into that neighborhood, assuming he makes it out in one piece the first time. And spitting in someone's face? Unthinkable. That's death where I come from (Rather I should say, "When were I came from was where I come from :roll: .")

    Since a couple of posters have already mentioned race, I just want to point out that LeeHo has not mentioned the race of his assailant or his own race. He evidently doesn't want to share many details about this incident, which he has every right to keep to himself if he wants to. But let's not make assumptions about the race of anyone involved here, please.

    As far as stats on who is more likely to be assaulted ,robbed or molested is a lame excuse for ignoring what is going on.

    We just moved here in August and thankfully, we havent had any issues. We have heard the gun shots and read the posts. We tend to keep odd hours because of our jobs and we think our street smarts keeps us at an advantage. For the record, I spent 12 years in a "nicer" part of Brooklyn where there have been murders and gun shots as well. The only place I have been mugged since moving to Brooklyn in 1993 was in Brooklyn Heights, so go figure.

    not sure if you read the paper a few weeks ago. I read a story about this guy who tapes crimes in our area and crown heights..A man was being mugged and just after looked up and saw the thugs running towards a guy with a camera.. Anyway these videos are going for like 29 bucks each and the guy is making big bucks. I wish I remember his name but the paper was about one week ago in the daily news.anyway keep your eyes open. and I am sorry to hear about this stupid attack, interestingly enough its not a new thing, little bastards have been doing this for years.. and yeah, no tough white kids anymore.. I totally agree..
