The problem is simply like my friend puts it, "There's no tough white people left here anymore." Back in the day when kids would come from the other side of the park to Park Slope to steal bikes, we had crews that would take care of them. And now what? Now we've got people getting victimized in the streets and attackers with no fear of repercussion. It's only going to get worse from here.

While the quote "There's no tough white people left here anymore" sounds like the title of a Norman Mailer novel, it's the absolute truth ,as well as the rest of Restless's statement on things probably getting worse in the future.
I feel the newer generation has not been tested and will be preceived to be weak and taken advantaged of by low life bullys that need 5 or 6 in a group to rob and intimidate them.

This is just a bunch of online BS. The stats don't support your suggestion that white people are being targeted. AND, it's highly doubtful that anyone would describe LeeHo as someone who might be perceived as weak, and yet he was randomly beaten. Point is, attacks are random and contrary to what you guys imply here - based on stats, blacks are still much more likely to be crime victims than whites.

Wow, My jaw dropped when I read the phrase "Not enough tough white people left here anymore" and people saying they actually agree with that phrase!!!

Do you guys really live in Brooklyn? Did you grow up here? I think that is one of the most ignorant statements I have ever read (and even though you didn't say those words, agreeing with them is just as bad).

As Appollonia pointed out, nobody made any mention of race in the attack. Maybe you personally know that Leeho and know that he is white, but why did you automatically assume the race of his attacker.

I assume Young Snitch posted that photo in gest.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions.

What Restless was stating was that there was a time in Park Slope when muggers came from another neighborhood to rob and assault the residents and it would be addressed by people in the neighborhood.
Using that approach somehow the word got out and crime declined.

Yes we are both from Brooklyn and proud of it.

    Yes the photo was funny.

Actually, the URL shows it's from some San Diego history website, in case anyone's not bothering to look.
  • there was also a time in brooklyn when black kids couldn't walk down court street or they'd get beaten up by the italians. if having little racial or ethnic havens is the solution, it's the new residents that are violating that social contract in crown heights.

but the simple fact is this: crime isn't up. yes, there have been several incidents involving newer residents being victimized -- and these people have a proportionately stronger voice to issue complaints than the community that was here when crime was much, much more prevalent. honestly, if you're looking to jook somebody, a person who's new to the community, doesn't know your friends or family, isn't streetwise, probably doesn't carry a weapon and likely has a laptop or an ipod is an ideal target.

besides, these cherished tough white kids would be robbing yuppies too.

Only one thing is wrong with that assesment Hamilton, not everybody who lives in Park Slope is white and not everyone who commits crime in Park Slope is non-white. So, please help me understand how having bigger white people in Park Slope/Prospect Heights helps your point?

The photo is not funny. The photo is disturbing. Are you guys really suggesting this is what Prospect Heights needs to help its crime problems?

The fact that anyone is beaten up blacks or whites who walks through any neighborhood is not acceptable.
The point Restless was making was there was a time, if someone was assaulted in his neighborhood it would be addressed by the neighborhood and crime would decrease in his community.

Are you stating that if blacks didn't rob yuppies whites would I hope I'm reading your statement wrong.

Ar'nt you the one who said you assumed the photo was in jest, if so address young snitch if your offended..
If you read Restless comment" in the day" dealt with the part of Park Slope he lived in and how he and his friends addressed the situation and resolved it..

Who said anything about bigger White People?

I may not have articulated my thoughts clearly enough in my first post. No, I don't know LeeHo's race. The implication of some of these posts was that "tough" people will not be victims of crime, while "weak" people, however you define that, will be, yet LeeHo who did say that he is a big guy (implying that he looks "tough"), was attacked.

My point was exactly that crime is random and that the race of the victim is irrelevant. Some posts on this thread were implying that "white yuppies" (not a phrase I'd use, because I try to consider race as a social construct and don't define individuals in such crude and general terms) were being targeted because they were not "tough white people" whatever the he77 that means. That kind of talk is a big pile of BS really, which is what I said in my original post.

People who think in those terms only illustrate how ignorant and dimwitted they themselves are.

Can you provide any proof of this notion that "it would be addressed by people in the neighborhood"? Are you suggesting that there was some sort of vigilantism? That is what it sounds like.

The "jaw dropping" point that was being made was that the type of white people (ethnic Irish, Italians especially) that made up this area back in the day were not the type of people you just walked up to and punched/slapped/spit in their face like it was just another day in the neighborhood. It just didn't go down like that, there were repercussions no matter what color you were, whether cwh812 wants to believe it or not. Yeah there were some racist people around, but standing up for yourself didn't have anything to do with being racist, it was about having some goddamn self-respect and pride in your neighborhood because it was your home, where you were born and raised in most cases. Having a set of balls can only help you in life (Sidebar: I wonder if having no sack is the reason all the guys around here now talk so nasally? Would be an interesting research experiment.)

Also, it has nothing to do with "bigger" (don't know what this schoolyard size thing is you all keep going back to), it has to do with how you handle yourself.

Anyway.. with regards to the differences in types of people.. one of my black friends (who grew up to a well-off family in the DC suburbs) hypothesizes that it has to do with your proximity/exposure to violence growing up. He says that being black, no matter how 'well-to-do' you are, you're never really that far away from that element, due to relatives/acquaintances/etc. The result is a basic amount of street smarts, common sense, precautions, etc. He couldn't get over me when he first met me, cuz he said that he didn't know that white people like me existed - like I always say, the youth of my generation were the last of the "inner-city white working class," at least in NYC, although the case is probably the same around the rest of the country as well I'm guessing :?

Well then I guess 51% of the population is sh*t out of luck.
  • restless native seems to have a sense of racial identification that is clouding an otherwise good point: many of the new residents are less streetwise and tough than the kids who grew up in working class brooklyn. that said, it's not like pussies are the only ones who get robbed.

That's not really true. When he's not trying to piss people off for the sake of pissing people off, he actually makes a lot of good points and adds a lot to the discussion.
  • I think it's a little much to say that the problem is the absence of "tough white people." Usually folks who fight back against robbery have to do so out of material necessity or the will to assert control over themselves and their space. Frankly, I don't think my iPod's worth fighting over, and I'm not going to put myself in harm's way just so kids potentially think twice before coming into the neighborhood again.

Or we could just wistfully long for the days when people were too poor to have any options before violence, or called each other wonderfully colorful epithets. Wasn't that just a grand old era? Everyone just robbed and beat the shit out of everyone else!
  • "coming into the neighborhood again"??? These 'kids' most likely live in the neighborhood. Just a thought.
  • young snitch and others that agree with him:

so, it's a person's own fault if they get spit on in broad daylight? they don't emit enought "toughness" so they are just begging to be victimized? one has no "self respect" if they don't fight back in a random street assault? you're pretty hard core, man. really.

being the victim of a mugging or assault does not mean you aren't tough. not fighting back doesn't mean you have no self-respect. maybe people just don't want to run the risk of getting stabbed or shot over a few bucks or foolish pride.

and your comments about people new to the neighborhood are way off base as well. i'm sick of people talking about how they grew up in brooklyn. jesus, GOOD FOR YOU! you're tough! want a medal?
  • and, for the record, burglaries and felonious assualts ARE up from last year.

where did i say that? i made a reference to new residents being targets for robbery for a number of reasons, but that shit about "self respect" was written by restless native.
