They did a great job with the boyfriend's new haircut. Nice modern cut, friendly atmosphere, and he served booze.

I've been wondering about this place.
    How much did they charge?
Do they take walk-ins? If not, how do you make an appt.? (I haven't seen a name until now, nor a phone number).
  • thank god! hair salons are so hard to find around here.

Hey eve. Thanks for the info. How much was the cut?

This is one of the first salons in the neighborhood that can cut straight (as in not curly), male hair.
  • what's the cross street of this place?
  • Yes, they do take walk-ins and the costof the cut, $40. The place is run by a married couple, the husband is who cut my bf's hair and he was really happy with it and his overall experience :)
  • Yeah, the husband is Shlomy, formerly of Vespa Salon down on 7th and 15th... Great guy, very intense but sweet.. the liquor or cappucino he offers is a nice touch.

  • Subject: Need exact address

Can someone please tell me the exact location of Salon-Biton? My wife and I were Shlomy's customers for many years. The last 2 years, however, we were living in Europe.. came back, Shlomy is gone from Vespa :(
what I have is 160 Vanderbilt... is that Vanderbilt Ave. or Street? I was at both locations, and couldn't find anything even close that resembles a hair salon.. very upset..

    Can someone please help?

    Thanks!

The salon is on the West side of Vanderbilt Avenue between Prospect Place and St. Marks Avenue in Prospect Heights. No sign on the place, but the front of the store is big plate glass windows with white trim and he has a large mezuzah on the door frame and a silver menorah in the window. He charges $60 for women's hair cuts.

He is very intense -- a little too intense for me. (kind of counteracts the pleasant effect of the wine or coffee). But he does a nice job.
  • Thanks!! :D:D

The exact address is 610 Vandberbilt Avenue (between Prospect Pl and St. Marks Ave), and the phone number is 718 623 9080. There is a sign in the bottom left-hand corner of the window that say Biton, but it's hard to notice. The menorah is much more visible! Shlomi is very intense and talkative, but he's a very nice guy and does a great job. He also offers coffee, tea, sodas, beer, and chocolate!

I have seen the place for a couple of weeks now, funny how some one in this forum put it" a place for (non curly haired men)" really wonder what that is suppose to mean? Are most hair salons in PH and Vicinity only for curly haired people? I guess most people that live in PH are curly Haired? Anyhow, i guess i will give it a try but for the looks of it a hair cut might be costing me more than dinner and cocktails at one of our local watering holes...I have been going to Ruthie's on Saint marks almost on the corner of 6th, she does an amazing job and i as a non "curly" haired person have not had problems with her messing my hair, as a matter of fact most guys or people i have seen there are non curly...Just wondering what the comment was all about?

Did Slhomy also cut your wife's hair? I am thinking of trying him for cut and color but am nervous about changing until I hear that he's also great with women's cuts. Anyone tried him for color yet?
  • I stopped in for a card and he told me that he's trying to rent the small space in the back of his salon to someone that can do nails and waxing. I'm dying for a one-stop-shopping salon experience PH. Spread the word to your out-of-work manicurists/Brazilian waxing professionals. There must be one somewhere...
  • wait. people still get brazilian waxes? yeesh.

I had my hair colored and cut today and have to say Shlomy did the best color (process & toner) I've had. The cut is wonderful, I look and feel rejuvenated. I'll be returning for more!

I'm happy to be able to have my hair done in the neighborhood rather than making the trek into Manhattan.
  • any curly-heads have their hair cut there? please post or PM me with your experience!
  • Just a question, but why are there soo many hair salon's on vanderbilt? What are there now 5? 6? Seems a little exorbitant to me.
  • Any news about nails/waxing at Biton? Good? Bad? Still non-existent?
  • I just had my hair cut here. It was written above, but I'll repeat it, Shlomy is intense! He seemed to understand, though, exactly what I wanted and needed in a haircut, and did so without much instruction or direction. I don't think that he would be a good haircutter for someone who wanted to micromanage every last snip. But for me, it worked. I was happy with the way that he listened to the fact that a) I don't like to do a lot to my hair b) it needed some texture.

He didn't try to sell me on color or try to get me to leave with a bunch of products. He just cut and styled my hair.

The atmosphere simple and comfortable, and Shlomy and his wife Anna tend to banter back and forth. I liked him, I liked the cut, and I'll go back!

For me, the salon is a nice addition to the neighborhood.
  • Not to be nitpicky, but Anna is not Shlomy's wife, just his assistant. Shlomy's wife is Melissa, who is often at the salon but doesn't work there per se.

Okay, thanks for that. I got the impression that they were married, but maybe they just have their work relationship well-honed. Anyway, there seemed to be a nice, friendly chemistry there that added to the atmosphere.

"Straight hair" is a euphemism for "white people hair." The original poster was likely commenting on the availbility of salons for the newer, whiter residents of PH.
  • awwww.....RIP, Sneaky.

Ayemel, really? I am "white" (if you consider Jewish to be white) and have very curly hair. I go to Salon Biton because Shlomy does a great job with my curls.

    End of story!

And, so, what if he was? What exactly is your point here?
