six shots? Underhill and Prospect Place

Apparently, no one was actually shot in the incident this morning. The man seen running who jumped into a row house was the one being shot at. Police came later and picked him up. According to neighbors, he seemed to know why he was being shot at (i.e. this was not random - perhaps a grudge thing like Gladys said). People I talked to said the shooter drove away. This happened a little after 11am this morning. There were LOTS of people around, seemed pretty stupid to try and shoot someone in broad daylight, there were tons of witnesses who saw everything, including the gunman and his car.

Second hand info: They were related incidents. It is my understanding from a friendwho lives a few doors from the incident who talked to the cops that one guy fired into the car of another. The car tore away, but an arrest was made. And at about 12:30 a search warrant was being prepared to enter a building from which one of the shooters alledgedly emerged and then re-entered. It was described as a grudge match.
The children and parnets in the playground were swiftly herded into the little brick house by the quick thinking playground attendant.
It was, I am told, on the 6:00 news. Hope the Precinct keeps on head up on this stuff. Hasn't been happening here for quite along time...not since the awful crack days of the early 80's. -

I've seen posts from people on different message boards that say they haven't seen or heard about this type of crime in the area since the 80s. What do you think is responsible for the uptick(if there truly is one)? -
im not sure what people are talking about. i only moved here a little over a month ago and i've heard of a few shootings since then.

I'm sure when people reference not hearing about this kind of crime in awhile they're referring to a little longer time period than the month you've been here. You'll see quite a few people here who have lived in the neighborhood for years. I've been here only 2 - I still feel like there's been an increase in crime in the past 8 months or so compared to the first 16. -
oh yea, i know most of the people on this board have lived in the neighborhood longer than me. that's why i was surprised to hear people saying they hadn't heard about this type of thing in a while.

Yep, it's sad and disheartening and frustrating. I live across the street from a woman who was shot in the leg through her window by idiot kids screwing with a gun on a roof around the corner from her house. Shot right through her own damn window while she slept. That was last Fall, I believe. Like I said, the past 8 months or so has been when I've started to notice the upswing. -

I think part of it is the readily available information on this site. I live right by where both of the shootings posted here happened. This one, I was sleeping and heard nothing. The second one (on Prospect) happened while I was at work and therefore would not have known about it unless someone told me. Before this site you relied on what was in the newspapers, you nosey neighbor, or the corner bodega filling you in on the happenings of the neighborhood. Before (over 10 years ago) it was just "in your face" at all times so you couldn't miss it. -
I was walking to the playground with my kids around 11:20am, right after it happened. After hanging out at the crime scene for a few minutes we decides to walk to the Mount Prospect playground and as we crossed Park place we saw a woman being taken in handcuffs by two officers. It seemed that they got her out from one of the row houses on Underhill between Park Place and Sterling. I don't know for sure if it is related but it seemed very probable.

I don't know if it's related, either, but I live on Underhill between Park & Sterling and I work at home. My desk is right by the front windows. I heard some yelling and hollering outside, but didn't think much of it because teenagers with no sense of their own volume often walk up the block. But then I saw the cops walking that girl to a squad car. But I didn't get a chance to ask them what the deal was. -
we live right outside of the park. we saw the mad dash to the bathrooms in the initial gunshots. The bizzare thing was there was one child left alone in a swing. A little bit later (minutes) the caretaker came and took the child with her. ??????

I've heard the same things as yikespjk: the police have identified two suspects and have also identified a house that may be the center of some of the recent trouble on Underhill this year.
Also, the 77th precinct says they are getting 38 new cops through the city's Impact program. Underhill is not in the Impact Zone, though the extra cops should allow them to put some extra patrols on Franklin. -
Subject: Precinct Committee Meeting
There might be more information available at the precinct committee council meeting this Monday. It's at 7:30 p.m. at 810 Saint Marks at the Marcus Garvey Nursing Home. -
Subject: shootings/drug dealers
The row house referred to earlier is at 164 Underhill right off of Sterling. The girl who was handcuffed lives there. This is a drug dealing house, which brings this kind of violence to our blocks, playgrounds and children. Let's all be aware of this. -

Hmm, Ryland...that's a fairly aggressive assertion. What's your basis for saying so? And is it the whole building, renters, holdover tenants, etc?
According to the NYC Finance/ACRIS, that house changed hands in May, 2007 and its got a pretty hefty (>$1M) mortgage on it. Maybe someone got in on the last-hurrah of no-doc lending, but i have to imagine borrowing that kind of $ with "drug dealer" listed as a profession on your mortgage application would be a tough sell. Maybe they went the "pharmaceutical sales" route.
As an aside - if you're right - how sad is it that in this day and age, someone would DRIVE two blocks to shoot someone else. No wonder the ice caps are melting. -
Keep an eye on the house and you'll see what I'm talking about.
By the way, you're very funny but this really isn't anything to joke about. -
Subject: Precinct Meeting
Last night at the 77th Precinct Community Meeting, the cops said that the person who got shot at was a resident of another precinct. He's been involved in criminal activities in this other precinct and he recently witnessed a shooting there. He came to the Heights to visit his girlfriend, who is the person that people saw being led away in handcuffs. -

Any news at the meeting wheter any of those impact cops will end up on underhill?

Subject: That Impact Zone
Someone had something smart to say about that on the meeting thread. Here it is:
homeowner
I was kind of depressed about that. City Council member Letitia James was there and her office is involved in trying to get the Impact Zone expanded. She's working with something called the Prospect Heights Association…

With respect to Operation Impact, the new officers are assigned to the area of Pacific to Eastern Parkway and Nostrand to Frankin from 11:30am to 2:30 am. Several of the residents spoke to the Inspector about increasing that time, especially on the weekends to address issues related to fights and muggings that occur on Fridays and Saturdays as people are on their way home from a night out. -

Well, although operation impact will not include the underhill area specifically, the inspector implied that the other officers in the PCT would be freed up to patrol the non-inclusive areas.
Ms. James also stated that when she speaks of having more police presence on the Western PH area to the people who have the authority to deploy manpower, they laugh. It is all relative i guess. The reason why operation impact was granted to the 77 is not because of the crime rate in western PH. It's like Nikki Hilton complaining that her life isn't glamorous enough. No one feels sorry for her.
Did I just compare the 77 to the Hilton sisters? Time for bed!

I've been hearing shots every couple of days here on Prospect and Classon... it's still Crown Heights, it sucks, but this is where we live. I hope it gets better, but it is what it is right now.
-
wow, every couple of days? im on rogers and bergen and i haven't heard a single shot in the past month and a half.

Looks like the house allegedly connected to some of the dealing/shooting/arrests on Underhill in recent months is now up for sale (to be delivered vacant):

note- the house pictured is definitely 164 Underhill....although the broker lists the location as Underhill and Prospect. -
$1.4 mill for a former drug-dealing house that needs extensive renovation (and if that phrase is in the listing, then you know it is extensive indeed). Are the landlords the ones buying the crack?

There's a 3 family brownstone further down the street that's across from the playground going for $2 mill, fully renovated, delivered vacant. Sounds crazy to me...especially w/a drive by taking place right out front! -

No, the people who are going to swoop in to drop $1.4 mil on it are the ones on crack, and there is no shortage of people willing to drop as much money as possible on these buildings as everyone knows. -
Okay, fess up—how many of you read a long way into this thread in shock and outrage before you realized it's the same thread about gunfire that we all reacted with shock and outrage to back in January? I got about ten posts in before I figured it out…

I agree. Time for this to go to bed.
Howdy, Stranger!
