Country Western bar for old Housebroken space
(have I already posted about this? don't recall)
some folks in the nabe, including the owner of Beast, are opening a Western/Country bar in the old Housebroken space across from Beast and Barrette at the southeastern corner of Bergen and Vanderbilt. there will be some food and the music should be, well, country. as for opening date - that's up to a gazillion factors. I'll let y'all know when I know more.
EDITED to remove the controversial use of the word "theme" - as a friend of the owners, not someone financially vested in the venture, I'd hate for my use of a word to make folks not want to check the place out.

why don't they merge it with beast's theme and open a country western dungeon?

awesome. i can see the tumbleweeds among the gargoyles now.... -
I hope they focus more on the older country western style and not the newer "pop" country that is out nowadays.

Not sure of a "favorite". I grew up around and still listen to Cash, Willie, Hank Sr., Patsy Cline, etc. -

We're on the same page , i don't think it gets any better then Hank Sr. his misfortune was having Col. Parker for a manager and Audrey for his wife. The guy was a genius who had cross over power which was unheard for his time.
I once took my wife to the Meadowlands which had a 10 hour show that featured Cash, Wille and and unknown Eddie Rabbit, it was a great show with a great crowd .
We had field level tickets which was nothing but a giant plastic covering with no seats and we mingled with bikers ,brokers and fans that just had a great time , not to mention it was a two hundred beer day.
It was a day to be cherished. -
I'll second/third the sentiment. If it's about the old-school country, it may wind up one of my new favorites.
On the other hand, I'm a little worried the irony level could be stifling. -
What's it going to take to get a mechanical bull in there?

DUDE.
If such a thing were present I would go there, like, nightly. And I'm not even in bars that much.
Assuming that's a no-go, though, I think I'm still more likely to head over to Hank's Saloon on Third Ave. -
a theme bar...great...

Oh yeah, I feel ya!
I'm also worried about the hipster irony factor. All and all I hope it's mellow, has a down to earth vibe, good booze, even better music and awesome locals. If it gets all Coyote Ugly, I'll burn the place down
I must say though, Hank's is my favorite
-
my impression is that it will be very old school country and not over-the-top thematic. I'll try to acquire more details next time I run into the responsible parties. personally, I'm psyched about the place.
-
Coyote Ugly is that still around?Could be worse how about a gay cowboy bar called Sidesaddle.
-
Hooray! This is a very very very welcome addition indeed. Must step up efforts to teach Boyfriend the words to "Jackson"...
-
Never thought I'd be that guy, but...
a country western bar in brooklyn - prospect heights - vanderbilt?
wow. that's weird. I mean everyone enjoys hank, patsy, et al on a jukebox, but to devote a whole bar to that, wow. -

Gotta agree with BoogieKnight here. Do they really think this is going to work?

they definitely are very positive about it. again, I'm pretty sure they're not intending for the theme to be overwhelming. and, again, I'll get more info when I speak to them. -
i would advise them to stop calling it a "theme."

Why is a Country joint a theme bar when we don't call a jazz club or any of the numerous LES-like places alt-rock places or CBGB as (was) a punk rock theme-joints?
Just wonderin'
(btw...my tastes run to Cash/Cline/Williams/Louvin Bros./Carter Family/Harry Smith as well as the Uncle Tupelo/Wilco/Son Volt/Jayhawks updates...all with no feeling of theme nor irony) -
If they can provide the following I'll be there on a weekly basis:
Shiner
Chicken Fried Steak (w/cream gravy)
Frito Pie
I know that there hasn't been any chatter about food. But a man can wish. -
yeesh, I put the word theme in the title, not the owners of the bar. I'll remove it since I do see your points. I just don't know how much the music the bar will be playing will influence their decor, drink/food selection, etc, hence the word "theme". however, it appears to be doing more harm than good. as others pointed out, it's easy enough to think of it as just a country western bar.
so yay.
and I did hear one of the owners mention empanadas. I will definitely petition for shiner. doubt they're going to run a big enough kitchen for the chicken fried steak but frito pie is easy enough with a crock pot of chili. -
yea, when you said "theme," i thought more about the decor than the music that would be playing. i pictured a bartender in a cowboy outfit.
-
Apologies alafairnadia for being testy...this is all good news!
(now, if something would happen on Washington between Sterling & St. Johns -- I've heard a bakery is coming next to Ripple at the old hair salon that's being gutted ---can you confirm?) -
aw damn. man. see. i don't like that. just open a frickin bar. we will have a fratty bar now, and a cheesy country bar. noooooooowhoa whoa no no. :-(
(haha. not that i won't go...i go anywhere with licker and a place to sit...and ill try anything once) -

no worries - I should know better than to just pick words at random to use!

not sure about what's up on washington - will check with my neighbors. -

well, considering how often I find the staff of beast wearing cowboy hats, western shirts and leather vests at work, I wouldn't be shocked to see country western attire involved. but if that hasn't put you off going to beast, I doubt it'd have an effect on the crowd at the new place. -
Subject: country? YEAH!!!
Ohhhhh, that is very cool!!! I will be there...will dust off my boots... It will be a great addition to the hood and vanderbilt...
swinging doors? like the old time saloons... -
live music? just wondering. there are plenty of country musicians in brooklyn (at least if you're expansive enough to include alt-country, bluegrass and old timey).
-
Subject: mechanical bull!
please!! if anyone is "listening," get the bull! that would be a most welcome enhancement (for me at least) to the whole what-to-laugh-at/with while-drinking experience. and a good excuse to buy a hat-)
Howdy, Stranger!
