77th Precinct Council Meeting Monday
Let's transform the energy of the Operation Impact thread from virtual to real:
the January meeting of the 77th Precinct Council is
Monday 1/14 at 7:30 pm
Marcus Garvey Nursing Home
810 St. Marks Place
between NY & Brooklyn
Why not come out and show your support for the new recruits,
voice your concerns
and network with other members of the community who are concerned about public safety.

There were several people relocated by the American Red Cross on Friday following a fire at 789 St. Marks which is directly across from the Marcus Garvey nursing home. It may be nice to take up a collection at the meeting to help those who lost their apartments.

can you tell me what new recruits have come the 77th? Is it the normal influx, or part of the big city effort I have been hearing about?

If you have been hearing about Operation Impact, then that is it. More info in this thread and article:

I'm out of town and would love to know if anything of note happened at the meeting. I'm particularly interested to hear if it was well attended, especially given the interest the letter writing campaign seemed to generate. Did anyone ask why property taken during a mugging would be classified as "lost" rather than "stolen?" I'm referring specifically to the thread on the Crown Hts. board by leaton. That still perplexes me. The issue has come up on other threads on this and the CH board of officers not taking police reports or filing them so that they don't figure into the comp stats as person on person crime. Vacation is always a good thing, but I really am sorry I couldn't make it to the meeting.

I was there for about half of the meeting. There were about 60 people in attendance, not counting all of the officers that were there (another 20-30 folks). Tish James was there as were people from Assemblyman Kamara's office, and the Crown Heights Coalition.
I missed some so I don't know if the question about the reports was asked or answered, but there was a bit of discussion about the crime on the west end of the precinct.
With respect to Operation Impact, the new officers are assigned to the area of Pacific to Eastern Parkway and Nostrand to Frankin from 11:30am to 2:30 am. Several of the residents spoke to the Inspector about increasing that time, especially on the weekends to address issues related to fights and muggings that occur on Fridays and Saturdays as people are on their way home from a night out. -
thanks for the update. any word on any additional police presence in western PH, say Underhill?

Didn't hear the whole thing but I think that there isn't a plan at this time. I did speak to the community policing liason who said that there is a lot of trouble with the kids hanging out at McDonalds and causing trouble in the Vanderbilt/Underhill area after school. They are aware of it and are tying to work with the folks at the school to get the problem resolved.
I think biftek posted more about the meeting in another thread on the board. He/she might have more info on the Underhill issues.
ETA: It was bendix who reported. Here's what he said:bendix wrote: Last night at the 77th Precinct Community Meeting, the cops said that the person who got shot at was a resident of another precinct. He's been involved in criminal activities in this other precinct and he recently witnessed a shooting there. He came to the Heights to visit his girlfriend, who is the person that people saw being led away in handcuffs.

Thanks for the report. 60 people is pretty good, especially in the dead of winter. I'd be really curious to hear how the precinct might justify its classification of a stolen phone as lost property. Sorry, i know I keep harping on that example, but it's just such an apt one. At the meeting in September a neighbor of mine described an incident that involved serious destruction of property (a broken parlor door) and asked why a report hadn't been taken. The responding officer refused and when he went to the precinct he was discouraged from filing a report. He got a very inconclusive, general answer. It's an issue I'd like to see pressed, although, happily, I don't have any personal experience to offer. Anyway, glad to hear about the meeting.
