Marco's

Got an email today that Marco's on Flatbush is closing.  Apparently the new format wasn't as profitable as it needed to be, which is a shame and also a bit strange.  Went there once; love it, and planned to go back.  We were never able to go back because we never were able to get another reservation in time.

Oh well.  There was another thread on this page talking about how Franny's isn't doing well, either, after the move.  I find that hard to believe, too, because the place is always crowded when I walk by (I gave up waiting an hour for a table there years ago.)

  • I am struggling to understand something about the flatbush business landscape.  If Kaz, and Marco's (2 restaurants that are almost always filled to capacity) have to close up because of the rent, how will a chain restaurant do any better?  I understand the bigger businesses have the equity to take the risk and cover initial costs, but they need to profit too.   Why are places like Patsy's scrambling to move in when their super successful predecessors weren't seeing profit?

I can only imagine that the turn-over in a chain restaurant is much higher than at a local place.  I don't know.  I do know that the couple of times we were at Kaz, at least one table seemed to be occupied by someone who was hanging out in the restaurant, yes he got dinner, but it seemed as if he came more to hang out with the staff, read, and drink a class of wine.

The Italian-food market in PH & north PS seems really crowded.  Amorino isn't doing well (I'm guessing, based on the fact that it cut back on lunch service during the summer.) There's Cataldo, the A Di La place on Washington, A Di La, Broccolino (which is amazing--go!) and probably a couple other places on 7th that I'm forgetting about.  To me, Marco's was a special-occasion place, not somewhere to go just on a whim.
