  • @Romario77    Does Chika deliver?

It was yummy. Ms whynot had the veggie burrito, and I had the carnitas.

We said hi to the female co-owner.
  • I had a carnitas taco. It was really tasty. I think the taco prices are a little high -- maybe it was $3.50 for the taco? I think -- like Berg'n-- they will have to adjust their prices downwards a bit for the neighborhood. I'd like to see a "2 tacos for $6" kind of deal, or have the tacos max out at $3 each. Chavella's prices their tacos at $3 each, for comparison, in a sit-down eatery.
  • Agreed. At $3.50 there better be a reason why I'm not going to Chavelas. They also have a taco happy hour, $2
  • The fish tacos are delicious, but way too small for $4.00. I shouldn't be able to finish a taco in 2 bites. The chips and guac is yummy and the service is great. I also think a 2 for $5 taco deal would be a welcome addition.

  • I saw the menu and it looks great but when I saw the prices my heart sank - I can't bring myself to spend almost 4 dollars on a taco - they are even cheaper than that in Manhattan at sit-downestablishments.  :-(
  • I have to agree with everyone...

I think 3.50 to 4 dollars is pushing it for a single taco, especially a 2 bite to finish taco like the ones here.

At around 4 bucks, I probably will just stop by to grab 1 taco as a mid day snack but not a meal. I'm much more likely to get 3 tacos for a meal if they are 3 bucks each, meaning 9 dollars spent even though they might cost a bit less.

I think in the long run, if they made all the tacos 3 dollars, maybe the fish taco 3.25 or 3.50 tops, than they will have a lot more business, I definitely would frequent it more versus going up to Chavella's.

(and please don't use pricing at places like Gueros' as justification of Chika prices, as I and many others I've spoken to aren't that fond of their food).

  • Also..the burritos (especially the veggie ones) are hella bland.  I don't get it b/c the tacos are delicious...

Anyhow....More spice please Chika!! A little more adobo never hurt anybody!!

  • I found the spice levels in the beans and the mayo for the fish tacos to both be quite high, although the beans would have benefited from some more salt.  The eggplant and the zucchini in the burrito bowl I had seemed to be completely unseasoned.  For the prices I would have expected a little more, even if it was just more lettuce in the burrito bowl.  I agree the tacos are tasty, but again, a little scanty.  The location is so perfect for us, but we can get more food, and more evenly flavored from Chavela's.  It would be nice if they worked on some of this stuff.  We really want them to be "our spot".
  • Guys, we are listening to your comments and criticism. Some people complain when the tacos/burritos are too spicy and some want them hotter, so we decided to have two options. For now we added spicy carne asada taco (beef) and not as spicy version. We will see how it goes and we might do the same with other options. We try to keep the menu simple ant tasty and hopefully addition of "hot" option will help.

We also have free sauces on the counter and some of them are really spicy, so you are welcome to put them on your burrito/taco/quesadilla or take with you in a small cup provided.

As for the prices - this is a sensitive topic, I understand everyone wants good value. We are thinking of the proper pricing, we might add a discount if you order three tacos at once. It is still work in progress and we are trying to make everyone happy which is not always easy since people want different things.

    That works for me.

BTW, it seems you are about to get some competition in the form of a another Mexican place on Nostrand: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/45078/taqueria-for-752a-nostrand-beneath-urban-asanas#Item_11
  • Hi Romario77,

Thank you so much for taking the time to address our group. I think that your point about available sauces and condiments makes a lot of sense -- people can't expect you to offer EVERYTHING to their taste, and I'm glad that you offer some great stuff so that we can make the tacos spicier if we want.

The big thing that I strongly urge you to consider is a "3 tacos for $10" deal, even if it is only for 'happy hour' or before 7pm or something like that. I know Guerros has a 3 for $10 deal during the late afternoon, and Kimchi Grill (the Korean-Mexican place on Washington) also offers an all-day 3 for $10 taco deal. Your burritos and burrito bowls are delicious and a great deal; I could totally see you making the burritos/bowls a little more expensive and the tacos a little bit cheaper.

We all want you to succeed. Feel free to post news and such on this website!!!

    THANK YOU!!
  • I was really looking forward to the opening and almost went over the weekend to try it out until I saw the menu. My friend lives down the block and we were going to meet and get takeaway until I pulled up the menu. In what world is a vegetarian burrito, taco or quesadilla made with zucchini, eggplant and carrots?

I know I am judging before trying, but I am discerning about where I spend my money.

I wish the owners good luck, but chavelas will continue to sate my desire for Mexican food in brooklyn.
  • @greenegirl What makes a proper vegetarian taco? Are you thinking of those potato tacos? I don't remember their actual name.
  • We now have 3 tacos for $10 for chiken/beef, 3 tacos for $11 for fish and 3/$9 for vegetarian.

We also added fish burrito and spicy beef taco/burrito.

For vegetarian taco we have our regular veggie taco and the Beans & Pico which is pretty cheap at $2.50.

We are happy to hear from you guys with your suggestions, I would love to hear what vegetarians think of the veggie tacos we serve.
  • Fantastic news!!!! Thank you for listening to us! I will come out tomorrow and celebrate by buying a 3 for $10 deal!!!

Hi, I am partial to roasted corn, black beans, raw onion, roasted or grilled poblano pepper and cabbage.

Here is an example. (Not my recipe)
    http://www.azgrabaplate.com/2013/07/grilled-corn-peppers-black-bean-tacos-with-creamy-poblano-sauce-2.html
  • We have very affordable black beans & pico taco at 2.50 each.
We will probably stick with the one we have for the moment, but we'll think about your option, maybe we'll add as a special.

Another thing we are working on is doing breakfast, we'll most likely open upcoming weekend for breakfast with eggs and other options.
  • We now have 3 tacos for $10 for chiken/beef, 3 tacos for $11 for fish and 3/$9 for vegetarian.

We also added fish burrito and spicy beef taco/burrito.

I am getting reports that last night there was a large fire that involved Chika early this morning, around 12:45 AM. New thread created: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/45306/large-fire-at-new-mexican-restaurant-chika-814-nostrand-at-lincoln-1245-am-march-2nd

    Update on March 4th:

    To (real name)

Hi (real name), thanks for checking on Chika. It was a small kitchen fire no structural damage and most importantly no one go hurt. We should be back in business in 4-5 weeks. Thanks for your support.
