Nacho Macho Taco opens at Grand and Prospect, Oaxaca considers next door.
The area I walk my dog (bounded by Vanderbilt, Atlantic, Nostrand and EP) will soon have yet another mexican influenced place to eat.
It presently has 13: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/43891/purity-diner-to-become-l-a-burrito-bar/p1
Soon, Oaxaca will open up a location at Grand and Prospect, giving us a total of 14!

While I hate L.A. Burrito, I'm looking forward to this other place!
-
Oaxaca used to be located where Gueros is now.
I've always wondered whether the incoming new mexican place bought some of the supplies outgoing place.
Black beans and rice last a really long time. -
was that location of Oaxaca ever actually open though? I remember the sign, but don't recall ever seeing any movement there.
-
It wasn't open very long (less than 6 months?). I think I tried it.
I know I have eaten at their location on Smith Street. It has been open a while.
-
I've had their tacos over at the 4th ave location and it was just meh. It's a chain taco joint, nothing Oaxacan about it.
-
Oaxaca made a very poor effort in the current Guero's location. They always closed early, I don't think they had beer or liquor, they had staff that seemed bored to be there, etc. I hope they come back with a better effort.

I dare state that they are more Oaxacan than Yummy Taco, which is mexican influenced only if we are being very generous. -
Don't forget all the Happy Fresh Taco places too!
-
We don't have one of those, yet.
-
The Spot has a sign saying closed till after the holidays. I can't imagine they're in trouble given how much business they've been doing, but I can totally see a little takeout taco place in the spot next door, which used to be occupied by a local "character" who can now be found hanging out in front of Spot's most days. The Oaxaca Taco on 4th is pretty shoeboxed-sized as well.
-
Yes, I also recall the character. He seemed to be living among mounds of clothing and debris in the first floor commercial space.
The NYT (click thu the Brownstoner article) states the rent is only 25k a year, which is way below what The Spot would run.
So, I think we are talking about the space to the right of The Spot on Prospect. The one that is behind the tree in the above photo.
....hopefully The Spot's renovations will be finished on time. One can see a big dumpster out front. -
Our neighborhood is Chiquita Mexico after all.
-
Oaxaca was open in that space. And not good. I LOVE Geuros so it worked out I think. I ate at the 4th ave one recently and it is still not good. I do not get how they're still in business let alone expanding. Yuck.
-
It sounds like The Spot has closed and is becoming a mexican place, though not Oaxaca but something called "Marga Mex"Since both brownstoner articles mention 417 prospect place as the location for these mex places, I assume there aren't two opening in the same building.
-
I suspect this new entity is renting the small, 25k a year space as well as the larger space formerly occupied by the Spot.
Two financial transactions.
The NYT caught wind of the first part, and Brownstoner echoed it.
Note, the tiny space was about the size of a garage. A while ago, the door was open and it appeared to be used as housing by a very low income person. -
A beer and wine lic is now in the process of being sought under the name Oaxaca.
So, it is safe to say that the folks who own Oaxaca will own this place, even if they ultimately choose to name it Marga Mex. -
The Spot seemed to have a lively brunch scene, but it looked uninviting and desolate most evenings. Maybe Marga Mex, if it's an offshoot of Oaxaca, can do a little more with the space than they have done in their current taco-centric venues. If it's just tacos, maybe it will diffuse some of the fascination with Guero's.
-
Ok, despite the confusion above, we have two seperate establishments.Tonight, an applicant appeared before CB8 to serve beer and wine at the small, 400 sq ft space that is behind the tree in the above photo. It is to the right of the big, corner spot that used to be The Spot.
The applicants are Oaxaca. What will become of The Spot?I kid you not, the landlord rented the adjacent, larger, corner space that used to be The Spot to another place that will be serving Mexican food: Marga Mex.The Oaxaca folks seemed annoyed that it worked out this way, but I don't believe they have any legal recourse.
So, this would be TWO Mexican places. This would be the fourteenth and AND fifteenth mexican influenced place in the area bounded by Vanderbilt, Atlantic, Nostrand and EP.This is as crazy as Starbucks opening next to Pulp and Bean.Questions? -
This seems crazier than that, to me. What's even more upsetting is that I highly doubt that the increased competition will raise the bar for quality one bit. 15 Mexican restaurants within .5 miles, but I could find better stuff at the unassuming Mexican-owned pizzeria in Sunnyside where I used to live.
-
So this Marga mex place where the spot was is actually called Nacho Macho Taco. They put a menu under our door and appear to be open. Looks very Nacho heavy menu -- chips. I wonder if they have a good fryer? Hmmm.
-
Every Mexican place that opens makes me appreciate Chavelas even more.

Temporarily changed the title.
So, now the mexican places are specializing in particular menu items to survive?
Are you sure they are at this address? I don't see a request for an intial kitchen inspection being filed.
-
Yes, Nacho Macho Taco (what a name) opened for business in the old Spot location last night.By the way, referring back to the earlier discussion of what will apparently be the Oaxaca space: the guy who hung out in there didn't live there, he just spent most of his time there, and as I recall sold untaxed cigarettes to locals.I'm told by a neighbor who's been here for decades that he used to have a small grocery on Washington Avenue and run numbers on the side. Given that he's still hanging out in front of the location, even in the middle of winter, I would not be surprised if he's still doing some sort of business.
-
Based on his past "lack of upward mobility", I can't imagine that whatever he is doing is very profitable.
I have a tough time believing that we will eat nachos enough to support an indoor dining area. ...but I wish them the best of luck.
It would not surprise me if they requested permission to serve alcohol soon.
Good work Re: getting us the info about the opening. @burningorange @mishaps -
We ate here tonight. It was yummy. The burrito was not dry, like some of the other places are.

It serves nachos, burritos, enchiladas, etc.
-
-
I had nachos and a burrito from there yesterday via delivery, and it was pretty good. Not necessarily outstanding in any specific way, but I would definitely get delivery from them in the future. It's a little more Tex-Mex than Chavellas, which in my opinion is still the best Mexican in the neighborhood.
-
I want to try this place but I called on Saturday and was told that none of their tacos or burritos are vegetarian (BF is veggie, so it felt rude to eat tacos in front of him)
-
Sorry to hear that they don't offer veggie tacos. But they do
They have portobello which are very tasty and have spinach tacos.
Give them a try -
The small, 400 sq ft space seen in the above photo behind the tree is again listed for lease.
This makes me believe that Oaxaca has managed to get out of its lease, and won't be opening literally next door to another Mexican restaurant. http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/19029764/417-Prospect-Place-627-Grand-Avenue-Brooklyn-NY/
