  • Since those photos on Boeuf & Bun's Facebook page were taken, hanging lights have been installed with Edison bulbs (of course). They definitely have the new Brooklyn aesthetic down.

And the food does look good. I have no doubt they'll be packed.

  • Boeuf & Bun hopes to open in early November, according to their facebook page (which is filled with photos of delicious looking burgers):

  • In other news, the bodega on Park and Kingston seems to have closed once again...
  • I've been doing a lot of late night walking down Kingston towards Empire, and am shocked by all the goodness that is over there that I was heretofore unaware of. A number of delicious smelling bakeries, a couple of fro-yo places and several Kosher delis. I'm going to have to eat my way down that strip over the next few months.
  • @homeowner - Enjoy the goodness.  It get's better as you get closer to Empire.  But the bakery on President is worth noting as well.
  • My favorite is Gombo's bakery, which is on Kingston and (I think) President. At Hanukah time, they turn the bakery over to baking the most fantastic jelly doughnuts. A warm jelly doughnut on a cold day is just delightful.

Gombo's Heimishe Bakery - That is the bakery I was referring to, located on the Northwest corner of President and Kingston.

@thecosmicrain I noticed that too but I don't have any info. I hope they reopen, as I prefer them to the bodega on the corner. The gate was up this morning and there were some people inside but it didn't look open for business. It's 225 Kingston for those following along.

    In other Kingston business news...

The hair salon two doors down, Orquidea's Beauty Salon at 229 Kingston, just celebrated its second anniversary. It's been my go-to salon since it opened, so I'm glad it's doing well. Some press from El Diario (in Spanish): http://www.eldiariony.com/crecimiento-emprendedores-empresarios-latinos-negocios-nyc-eeuu and http://www.eldiariony.com/florece-brooklyn-negocio-madre-luchadora-dominicana.

Maxwell's, at 259A Kingston, has been open for about three weeks now.

And Boeuf & Bun, at 271 Kingston, got a new storefront with cantilevered doors. This pic is from about a week ago; the old awning came down Wednesday.

  • While I like Gumbo's for some baked goods, I think their stuff tends to be too sugary. I go there for some variety, but, on a regular basis, I use Albany Bake Shop, on the NE corner of Albany and Union. Their bread, especially challah, is better (I find Gumbo's too dry) and their desserts not quite so sweet. Albany also sells a limited line of groceries. They also have some prepared salads and they make sandwiches. Being strictly kosher, however, this is NOT the place to look for a ham and cheese sandwich. Albany recently moved into this larger, much nicer looking, space.

Albany is only one block east of Kingston. If you go to the bake shop, you can also stop at Benz's gourmet shop (smoked fish, fresh fish, specialty groceries, olives, and a variety of beers. (Since i hate beer, I'm no expert on what's available there; knowing the owner, though, I expect that the beers choices are good.) Next door is Mr Green's which carries quite good fruit and vegetables, though not a huge selection. All three stores, being owned by observant Jews, are closed on Friday starting a 2-3 hours before sundown, on Saturdays, and on Jewish holidays. They generally close between 6 and 7 PM, but are open a little later on Thursday nights. For larger orders, I believe all three will deliver.
  • Here is a recent menu for what Benz has in the way of beer:

Has anyone been to Maxwell's yet?  I didn't even realize that it had opened..
  • @morralken - Just wanted to note that Albany Bake Shop does not bake on premises, at least that is my understanding.  But I do prefer their challah over Gumbo's.

And just to reminisce - Do you remember when Albany Bake Shop was located where the Apple Bank building is now, across the street from its current location?  They had quite a large baking operation going on there (with alley access from EP), and the whole area smelled awesome, particularly early mornings.  There are very few things I miss since new development came to CH, but this is surely one of them.

@ BklynGirl...I know the owner of 225 Kingston, for the last few months he's been back in Yemen. The next time I speak with his son or daughter I'll try to find out what's going on there.
  • Actually, the bread is definitely not back on the premises, but they do the food prep in the back of the new store.
I sure remember the former Albany Bake Shop location, across the street. I've been living a one minute walk from them for the past 38 years, so I've been shopping there a long time. I knew the former owners fairly well and, of course, all the white-haired, Jewish lady salesclerks. The owner would give me samples of new things to taste. Some things they made, besides the challah, were very good, others, not so much. If I wanted raisin pumpernickel, I would tell him and he would bake it for me.
One day, I ran into the woman who used to own Sinclair's on Washington Ave inside the ABS. I knew her from my day's living on EP and Classon. As it turns out, she used to purchase bread (except challah) from the ABS. Challah, she baked herself.

Dac, I did not realize that Benz's carried so many brands of beer. Since I don't drink, I merely noticed that there was a variety, just not so many types.
  • @pragmaticguy There was a hand-written For Rent sign in the window of 225 Kingston today.

Click thru for photo of exterior of Boeuf and Bun:
  • The for rent sign has come down and there's been construction work inside 163 Kingston the past two days.
  • I look forward to the opening. I love hamburgers and the fast food kind do NOT satisfy me. A place I can walk to in 2-3 minutes will be great. I hope the burgers really are good and that I can get them rare.
  • You might be able to get them rare.

However, I do not think you will be able to get them with cheese or on a Saturday.
  • Just spoke to the owner of 225 Kingston. Told me that he's rented to a 99 cent store. New tenant will be starting to fix the place up as soon as he can get rid of the old freezers and the like that were there from the bodega.

Had also spoken few weeks back with the lady who owns the diner (Bobby's) on the corner of Kingston and St. Johns. Told me there was never a firm deal for the property so she has no idea when it'll be sold and when she'll be able to retire. Said she's tired of getting up at 4am and since she's in her 70s I don't blame her.
  • I passed by there a couple of times in the past few days. The windows are still covered with brown kraft paper, but they did remove the ramp to the front door and have replaced it with two steps. I really don't care about getting drinks (I'm sure the owners do, though), but I would really like a good hamburger within a couple of blocks of my house.
  • Maxwell's is now advertising a happy hour:

    20150114_193158
  • Can't wait to hear from people how Maxwell's is. I went on a long walk today around the neighborhood, and checked out my old stomping grounds of Kingston between Prospect Place and Atlantic. Not much has changed since 2010. From Prospect Place to Eastern Parkway, astronomical change. Two giant buildings on Kingston, around the Park/Prospect Place/St. Marks area -- formerly vacant and burned out -- are being renovated. I think those building getting filled with people will be the shock Kingston needs to become Franklin Ave II, aka, where all the Cool Ponys and Rosebud Vintages head next (I hope).
  • The property values of Kingston have already changed.

However, the business mix isn't going to change right away. Many of the existing businesses have long term leases.

Also, although Kingston is seeing some new housing come on line and some changing demographics, it does not compare to the influx of people and wealth Franklin received between 2006 and 2009

...the Jewish hospital complex gradually opened during those years and brought 700 new units.
  • True. There is no way to compare 700 units to, maybe, 100. Upper Kingston is just so sad and desolate. I think that when it does change, it will happen fast. There are not that many storefronts to begin with, so even if one or two change over, that will be a monumental change in the feel of the strip.
