Nostrand Avenue, these are the developments that were know about and it is only January. More will come as the year progresses. Are you ready? -
Mod note: Let's restrict this thread to edits to the map and to the list of establishments and their links... put any comments in the linked threads.
Thank you.
-
We may also want to use this thread to make macro comments, like:
"ready or not, here comes massive change"
-and-
"Holy shit, it is only January and this is what 2015 already looks like!"
-and-
"2015 might be as big of a year to Nostrand, as 2010 was to Franklin" -
What about comments about how the numbering jumps from 8 to 10 in the above list? Are those comments allowed?
-
Yes.
You may also want to mention that #5 is on Kingston, and thus does not appear on the map no matter how hard you look. -
February map update! Please follow this link for the interactive version: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z8TGvun3NeCc.k5kyTr7PNs7k#sthash.h4hAs6Zg.dpufAnd remember to use the links WhyNot posted in the list above if you want to talk about any of these places in particular. This thread is only for discussing the global changes to Nostrand.

This map depicts the major "retail corridors" in Brooklyn.
Despite Nostrand's increasing rents, it is not yet a dense enough district to be included.Needless to say, the number of retail corridors in Brooklyn is growing exponentially. By Real Deal's measure, they doubled within the last two years:Do we think Nostrand will make it onto this list by 2020? -
This map is extraordinarily difficult to make sense of. Why didn't they use some kind of sensible gradient as a color key? What do the numbers on the map itself mean? I far prefer the google map I created, you're welcome world.
-
I believe the numbers on the dots indicate the rank of that strip (by density, not price) within the 121 corridors.
They don't tell is how dense a strip must be before it meets the definition of a corridor, so it isn't clear to me how much denser Nostrand needs to get.
I think we can get on their list by 2020. But until then, your map is a good one. -
I saw that map yesterday and was incredibly confused as well, so I went to the source, CPEX. Page 3 of the pdf has the map next to a list of the corridors: http://www.cpexre.com/system/research_items/documents/000/000/085/original/2015_Brooklyn_Retail_Report_(Web).pdf?1423757990Nostrand Ave in Crown Heights does make it, twice. #95 is Nostrand between St. Marks and Eastern Parkway and #96 is from Eastern Parkway to Empire. They're both red, meaning they rent for $35 to $49 a square foot.
-
Thanks for hunting that down...I was very confused by this too. The numbers in the dots, then, appear to be that corridor's alphanumeric rank, and nothing more. Still, PH/CH well represented, w Flatbush, Vanderbilt, Washington, Classon, Franklin (in two pieces), Nostrand, Utica, and even a segment of Eastern Parkway at Utica.
-
In that case, do we think we will move up in price and rank, to one of the other colors?
-
Rachel was apparently under a deadline and had this thread nearby at the same time: http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20150310/crown-heights/map-10-new-businesses-opening-on-nostrand-ave-crown-heights

Click here for interactive version. Please discuss individual places on their own threads, found in Whynot's post at the top.
-
6 months later, most of the businesses were able to open!
The map on page 3 of the pdf below puts the new business boom in context: "Over 900 new luxury apartments developed or coming to market as of Q1 2015"
www.rkf.com/rkf/lease-property-detail-flyer.php?lease_property_id=947
(pdf is somewhat large) -
Notes -- Little Trini Cafe is OPEN!
-
And tasty and very reasonably priced.
-
More places have recently opened (B Bra, Marker Coffee), so it might be time for us to do some more homework to figure out what else is in the works.
A lot of places seem to sign their lease in the fall, do renovations all winter, and then open in the Spring/Summer.
2016 should be similar. -
Thanks whynot! Here's an updated screenshot. The bar run by the owners of bearded lady, the rumored community art space and 99 rogers are the only places that we'd heard about that have yet to open (reminder to discuss those places individually on their own links, at the top of this thread, or this thread will get shut down)I'd love to know what's in the works for 2016!

-
Here is a 2016 one: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/45581/goodbye-glenda-s-on-st-john-s-off-nostrand#latest
This one is becoming something else: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/38438/813-nostrand-and-union-about-to-open-as-a-bbq-place#latest -
Two more for 2016:
Upscale market: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/46243/fancy-market-coming-to-600-nostrand-near-pacific
And, Sweet Brooklyn Bar: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/46040/sweet-brooklyn-bar-would-like-to-be-in-the-former-nobar-space-608-nostrand-near-atlantic#latest
Note, Sweet Brooklyn Bar has started the process with CB8, but has not yet appeared. So, it is not yet certain whether they will follow through.
-
Are there plans to extend this map south? There are several new businesses below empire that might be fun to track in relation to the crown heights zone. Including star liner cafe, deserts by Michael Allen, I.m pastry studio, food sermon, pels pie etc
-
Hi BrooklynAve --I'm particularly interested in this part of western crown heights as it's all walking distance from my apartment -- and I worry the map will become overwhelming if it covers too big an area. But they're easy to make, and if you'd like to start a new map/thread for openings in crown heights south I'd love to follow it!To make one, just log into your gmail/google account, go to maps.google.com, click on the horizontal lines to the right of the search bar and select My Maps. From there, click on the create button to make one and get the link to then share it.
-
Thanks Laura, will do
-
Updated to include: Sweet brooklyn bar in former NoBar space, Upscale market on Nostrand and Pacific, Fancy nail salon on Rogers and St. Johns.Yellow = opened in 2015Red = not yet open

-
Nostrand avenue openings in 2015 (for those who have been following, I decided to switch open places back to green again -- i'll start a new map for 2016)

-
Little Trini Cafe hasn't been open for the last month and a half at least. For a while I was going there twice a week and am really bummed they haven't been open... Not sure if they are on some sort of hiatus or if they have officially closed.
Howdy, Stranger!
