Less than 5 hours later, a stabbing rumored to be retaliation has taken place: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/45745/2nd-stabbing-within-3-blocks-within-3hours-eastern-parkway-and-schenectady-june-11-1220-am#Item_1

"CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn– Police say an 18-year old was fatally stabbed in a Brooklyn sneaker store Wednesday evening.
According to detectives, at around 6:49 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a call of an unknown man stabbed in the Allegiance Boutique at 249 Utica Ave in Crown Heights.
The man received significant stab wounds to his neck, shoulder, and torso, police said.

Tragic. I fear this is a sign of things to come, of a city going backward after decades of progress in crime fighting. Even though "overall crime" continues to decline in NYC, that point means little to nothing to those who are in areas with increasing elements of violent crime, including increased shootings and homicides.

What a start to the NYPD's "Summer All Out" event. Also, I would not discount the important that with more police surveillance and reporting then ever, we citizens have more aggregate, actual knowledge of things like stabbings, robberies, shootings w/o death. I think in the not-so-recent past, a lot of this stuff flew under the radar and just was not registered in the public's mind. So maybe crime is not actually increasing -- just our ability to track it has improved. And the gentrifying types moving to formerly very violent neighborhoods are helping this shift along.

The two fatal stabbings are now believed to be distinct incidents.
The name of the deceased in the first incident has been disclosed: "The teen, identified as 18-year-old Jamal Joseph, had stab wounds to the neck, shoulder and torso. He was taken to Kings County Hospital where he was pronounced dead."

This stabbing seems to have stemmed from a fight in a store, in which the perpetrator was also around 18.
"The knifeman—described by police as black, about 18-years-old and wearing a red shirt and hat—fled the scene."

DNA is now reporting both of the teens fatally stabbed last night knew each other, and has published photos:

Jamal Joseph is identified as the teen on the far left of the photo, as well as top right.
It remains unclear whether the NYPD is hunting for two assailants in these two incidents, or just one. -
Lots of stuff previously went "under the radar," but fatal gunshots and stabbings really do not fall into that category. These, along with non-fatal ones, seem to be precisely the crimes that are on the upswing lately.
-
The NYPD is presently seeking all of the people in the below photos in connection with the two fatal stabbings.

Damn. I really, really hope we get this under control.

There hasn't been much coverage of the shooting last night. This is all I've been able to find:
"A 30-year-old man died after he was shot in the head in Brooklyn early Friday, police said. Cops discovered the victim, who was not immediately identified, lying unconscious on the street in front of a two-story duplex on Troy Ave. near St. John's Pl. in Bedford-Stuyvesant at about 1:20 a.m., authorities said. Emergency responders rushed him to Kings County Hospital, where he died, officials said. The shooter remained at large Friday morning."
http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/man-30-dies-shot-head-brooklyn-street-article-1.2255831
The article states "All three homicides appear to be unrelated, police said."
So, no one should reach any conclusions yet. -
The NYPD has now begun to articulate their search in a way that I can understand which suspects are being sought in connection with which stabbing.
At the top, in the red shirt, is the suspect being sought in connection with the earlier stabbing, resulting in the death of Jamal Joseph. The people below him are wanted for questioning re: his stabbing.
