Prospect Heights to get bioswales (no, that isn't a disease)

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is undertaking a number of projects aimed at improving water quality in the Gowanus Canal. Several of these projects are intended to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) into the canal. CSOs are prone to occur during heavy rains when stormwater overwhelms the capacity of the local sewer system.
Because Prospect Heights is part of the watershed for the Gowanus Canal, DEP plans to install a network of bioswales to absorb stormwater. Bioswales are tree pits with a curb cut to absorb runoff. This map shows the locations of approximately 40 bioswales to be created in Prospect Heights (marked by green dots).

This is what these things look like:Dirt pits with plants are useful to avoid poop in the canal, which is what a 'CSO' is.

Now all we need is one at Eastern Parkway and Franklin. South Island. That thing is treacherous.

I saw one of the crews digging a test pit for one of these earlier this year. I took a few seconds to ask them what they were up to. The engineers on the site must have been pretty excited that someone was nosy about their work because they spent a long time explaining exactly what was going to happen and left me with a brochure. The program sounds great, and, personally, I'm looking forward to seeing these things in the neighborhood.

I was at class with the Gowanus Conservancy last week (just learned about them that day) and the director mentioned this program. I think at some point, the Gowanus Conservancy will be leading classes to be a bioswale caregiver, or whatever they call it. You can probably email them about this if you are interested. The GC seems like a good group to have in Brooklyn and are working for lots of projects like this.
