"After its lauded American debut last year, Germany’s long-running techno staple Time Warp returns for its second indoor festival in New York City in November, this time taking over the historic Bedford Armory in Brooklyn on November 20-21. Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler, Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Joseph Capriati and Chris Liebing (many more to be announced) will be bringing cutting-edge techno and phenomenal production for a weekend that celebrates NYC’s rich history as a world-beating electronic music scene."

That looks awesome.
-
yup. However, it seems only the tickets/packages that remain cost more that $200.
http://www.flavorus.com/event/Time-Warp/305258 -
that is a world-class lineup.that it's a block away from my old apt is... surprising.
-
What is not surprising is that some people don't want it to happen:
http://myemail.constantcontact.com/ARMORY-ALERT------.html?soid=1112633571666&aid=L0VcpTfF1Q4

They perceive such events as the city openly embracing the demographic changes that are taking place, and ignoring their preferences.

not of lot of PLUR in that

All caps, numerous fonts, and comic sans, all in one email--that's a unicorn email!

haters gonna hate. what else was gonna happen in this space on that night or 2 nights? i don't see competing interests. its a space that would have nothing else going on in it, no?was there a similar response to the latino concert? i dont remember seeing one on here... begs the quesiton

Prior to hosting the Time Warp rave, the Bedford Union Armory will host Kinus, a large gathering of orthodox Jewish men. November 4 - 9th.

A decidedly different crowd.

Rachel reports some people still don't want the rave to happen: http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20151103/crown-heights/cancel-two-day-rave-planned-at-crown-heights-armory-locals-say

The Kinus events begin at the armory tomorrow morning.

This is what is done with all the old factories, armories, etc. in East Berlin (which is cool as shit). Love seeing the armory used for this.
-
Local politicians held a press conference this morning outside of the armory, stating that they are upset over the Rave:
https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=924068917674040
While this video only features Diana Richardson, I hear each politician that spoke said virtually the same speech.
When I think about it, this really is a no brainer for the politicians: The people coming to the rave are viewed as "outsiders" who did not help them get elected, and are unlikely to get them re-elected.

Rachel's piece:
https://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20151112/crown-heights/fate-of-crown-heights-techno-festival-limbo-as-pols-continue-fight
I'd have preferred she title it "Politicians Raving Mad" -
An additional concern is that by using the words "rave" and "techno" we are inviting the 1990s to come back in full force. Better break out my UFO pants!
-
Call me crazy, but I'm a little more concerned by the frequency of gunshots in this neighborhood than I am some people listening to music and......gasp....possibly using recreational drugs that more often than not just lead people to want to cuddle each other. This really is some puritanical B.S. Part of me wants to dust off my old JNCOs and go purely to spite them. Do we really not having bigger problems to attend to than this? Gun violence? Sexual Violence? Domestic Violence? Homelessness? Human trafficking? Nope, all that goes on the backburner because those whippersnapper kids are listening to their gosh-darned devil music! SMH...

The Patch has run an article entitled calling the speakers "Brooklyn Old Timers", which seems pretty spot on.
http://patch.com/new-york/prospectheights/brooklyn-old-timers-keep-euro-rave-out-our-hood
It also details how attendees will be shuttled to the event and sound proofing will be used.
I'm suspecting the objections of the politicians and speakers are NOT just about a concert...
-
really close-minded bullshit from a tiny group of NIMBYs. I'm suspecting alicia boyd probably is silent on this issue because she probably has some euro ravers booking her airbnb for the event already :P
-
Such grandstanding by local politicians is one of the reasons that I am ok with the armory being under the control of DCAS, not them.
Newsflash: We aren't always going to like the events held at our local concert hall/arena/park.
...that is why it is important we all don't have to approve something before it occurs.
...that is why DCAS and other entities establishes procedures and requires insurance.
-
If there is another poster on here whose bedroom window faces the armory directly, then that would be a valid, productive contribution. Dubbing this a NIMBY issue is myopic - with a new school degree in urban planning I'm extraordinarily cognizant of all of the political issues surrounding use of space. This isn't about not liking the events, this is about:
- Lack of sound insulation. The architecture effectively makes this building an amplifier.
- Lack of parking facilities if this building will be used for new business purposes.
- Lack of normal permitting procedures for a concert venue to be established in a residential area.
- No abiding by any kind of 4am timeline, a rave going until 6am means the apartments in the adjacent properties cannot maintain 'quiet enjoyment' of their spaces. Or even be at home. I'm thankful I don't have children, this would be pure hell.
I would like to see all of your reactions if I came and set up a rave inside your bedroom without your consent. The decibel level of these events is absurd. I've lived in NYC for 12 years, and this is absolutely unprecedented. It's like unmitigated eminent domain of my eardrums. -
Assuming you bring good music and drugs, I'm cool with it.I would like to see all of your reactions if I came and set up a rave inside your bedroom without your consent. -
From what I read in The Patch article, many of those concerns are addressed by running shuttles and installing sound proofing.
I don't see the events as being much different than the outdoor concerts that occur behind the Brooklyn Museum every Labor Day weekend.
They tend to occur with very little incident.
I just wish I was young enough to still enjoy such events while staying up that late/early. Here is Fox 5's take: http://www.fox5ny.com/news/48178725-story
-
The politicians were able to get the rave moved to Sunset Park. ...it looks like the Sunset Park folks have less power than us.

-
yeah inappropriate use of an otherwise pretty excellent building is a fair point and all, but the fact the pol literally said "WE DO NOT WANT A RAVE" speaks volumes about the *kind* of people they don't want in crown heights, not logistical concerns that are actually the fault/responsibility of DCAS. the real issue is that DCAS haven't done a damn thing about cementing the future of the armory--they're just kind of keeping it in limbo.either way, show's over; the rave isn't happening here and i could really care less--except for the fact our general area is probably going to be viewed as populated by music-hating tightwads. oh, except when it comes to steel drums in empty lots until 4 am. then it's totally ok. - D O U B L E S T A N D A R D S -
-
I wonder what the politicians had to trade in order to get it moved.
Nothing is free. -
To be fair, for sound/disturbance issues, moving it to the industry city area of sunset park area where a lot of big warehouse parties happen makes sense. They are not surrounded by many residential units as the armory is.
-
It happened there last year, without incident.
Will DCAS have to clear only some types of events at the armory with local politicians?
In a few years, the buildings around the armory will likely have lots of new residents. Will they mind a rave as much?
Will the politicians change their stance? -
Since many of the ravers would eat/drink before and/or after the rave, the extra income generated by local businesses may be a selling point to local politicians (if the local businesses can be vocal enough to advocate).
