Local Prospect Heights, Crown Heights and Prospect Lefferts Gardens Facebook Groups — Brooklynian

Local Prospect Heights, Crown Heights and Prospect Lefferts Gardens Facebook Groups

On occasion, people ask me about local Facebook groups that serve the Prospect Heights and Crown Heights area.    There are several:

There is a group for Neighbors of the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/172188886172815/

There is one for Prospect Heights Parents:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/326145404085054/

And one for Crown Heights Parents: https://www.facebook.com/groups/386656808173738/

And, one for folks interested in Prospect Lefferts Gardens:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/prospectleffertsgardens/

And, last but not least, a recently formed one that declares Crown Heights is more than just Franklin Avenue:   https://www.facebook.com/groups/1553895644933078/

I may have missed a few, but have fun!

...and keep posting here too!

  • Perhaps needless to say, the Facebook groups have more activity than Brooklynian.

However, they don't allow a reader to watch how a site or story evolves over time.
  • anybody in the south-of-PLG flatbush demo want to form an FB group with me? not sure we'd have much to talk about but hey
  • They are easy enough to build.   Just put "Flatbush" in the name of the group and the tags.    Then, advertise it in nearby groups and delete memes and fools.

...websites have a lifecycle, and posters seem to prefer Facebook.

Websites are slowly becoming obsolete and out of fashion.  It has been interesting to watch over the last 10 years.  In march, I will be a member here for exactly 10 years.

  • I'd join you, Suppleknuckles. For the longest time I've been wanting to do a site or something for our general area.
  • One advantage that a message board like this has over Facebook is that here you can be somewhat anonymous.

With the advent of Facebook, I think people value their anonymity less than they once did.

...when this board first started, it seems people really liked be able to express their opinions confidentially.   As time went on, I think it slowed down (in part) because people realized there was no huge consequence from making their opinions publicly known.

In addition, there is less need for the board now that the area is not occupied by people who are often starving or scared.

Starving:    OMG, someone is going to open a bar nearby with a kitchen!   The closest one is now far away

    Scared:   Were those gun shots?

....it is hard to feel excited about the 20th restaurant.   It is hard to be scared when shootings are now rare....

  • turns out there is an FB group for "north flatbush" --no specifics on it other than it being cb 14 and cb17, which i believe covers most of the area we're talking about

  • Oh snap, nice find. Thanks for sharing!
  • These little micro groups are starting to kill the comment sections of traditional websites and newspapers, because regular readers do not want to have to deal with the anonymous obnoxious comments frequently found there.

...they instead want to hang out with a familiar group of people (or avatars) in a group where moderators get rid of genuine trolls.

...like no_slappz who would post on The Q at Parkside.

Gothamist does a decent job of deleting trollish comments that have been flagged and/or downvoted by enough people. The Daily News and CBS Channel 2? Not so much.

Is there a group on Reddit?
  • I don't see much activity on Reddit.

...folks seem to have gravitated to Facebook, where they are already logged in and wasting time instead of working.
