Nabe throw down! Any challengers? — Brooklynian

Nabe throw down! Any challengers?

Since I'm new, and I'm sure this has been done before, here we go...

It's a MTF'in nabe throw down. Who's up for the challenge?

Top 10 reasons your nabe's better than mine (guess where mine is?).

Beat this, gloves off, protective glasses on (safety first ) :

1. highest point in Brooklyn
2. best mix of Latino, Polish, Italian, newbie artists and hipster wannabes (we ain't Billyburgh yet!--hopefully never will be, ha!)
3. 2nd largest green-space in the Boro across the street, with 600,000 very quiet neighbors
4. ample parking (if you drive)
5. ample gutters (if you drink, but don't drive)
6. open sky, open sky, open sky
7. too many damn new condos (wait, is that a perk, aw what the heck)
8. best sunsets other than Sunset Park (Grrrr)
9. home to the Battle Of Brooklyn (August 1776)
10. I LIVE HERE (that should be #1  )

Any takers!?!

  • Come on! No takers? No trash talkers? No folks to stand up for your nabe, no matter how silly this thread is? Common' Brooklyn, step up!

    Disappointed :(
  • Taking claim for the Greenwood Heights name, Fillmore Real Estate vice president Sal Cappi says he coined the moniker back in 1988, when a new development of six townhouses was being built.

"We were trying to come up with a marketing edge for what was this no-man's-land. Something with pizzazz. It still took a couple of years for it to stick."

Well, on the downside, lameish realtor-coined name. And the guy calls it a no-man's-land! I'd say you owe him a punch in the mouth for that, but "Sal Cappi" is a pretty tough sounding handle...

EDIT: Sorry, the first two paragraphs are from here: http://www.fillmore.com/article_nypost.asp
  • Again, the broken record in me...
lostingreenwoodhts wrote: Greenwood Hts. is derived from "The Heights of the Green Wood" on maps which predates the Battle of Bklyn (Battle of LI) in 1776.

It was also known as the "Heights of Gowan" by the British. The Name "Greenwood Hts, Green-Wood Hts. or Hts. of Greenwood" have been used off and on for HUNDREDS of years. Dropped by city zoning maps back in the 1960's, NOW recognized by City Planning after the South park Slope/Greenwood Hts. rezoning in Nov. 2005.

So, call Community Board 7, City Planning or one of our local electeds and ask them about "Greenwood Hts." It's official, according to the city.
Sal was quoted in the same article I was. He "may" have coined the term in one of his listings, but he did not "invent" the name. Funny thing too, NY Times quoted used the name back in 1985, predating Sal, in a real estate article as to call a listing around 15th St. "Greenwood Heights, South Park Slope or Sunset Park?"

From the same article, just to add to the "nabe throw down" (and I am even giving myself away ;)

"And more new apartments are on their way.

"There will be well over 300 new luxury condo and rental units within the next year," says graphic designer Aaron Brashear, who along with his wife, Mic Holwin, co-founded the Concerned Citizens of Greenwood Heights.

Brashear notes that Greenwood Heights is "not at the hipster stage yet, but I do eventually see that happening. I just hope we don't have total gentrification like Williamsburg."

So, Drano, you gonna throw down? :)

Nah, not for this. I can live with you being happy about your neighborhood. Plus it's not like I can prove you don't have ample gutter space.
  • WEEEEEEEEEEK folks. Too bad, wanted to have some silly fun with folks from other nabes, perhaps lern a thing or two.

Guess I have...no one can throw down ;)
