ripple .. wtf .. bad techno? — Brooklynian

ripple .. wtf .. bad techno?

darlin's ... I know electronic musicians and techno DJs. I can get you a CD that will play better than this. right now, I'm hearing something really horrible filter through my living room window. so horrible, actually, that I kinda worry that I apparated by accident to Jersey. and I can't figure out why there isn't a riot. or an empty bar. cause. this music is BAD. no, really. it sounds like an endless loop of bad, late 90s godawful techno coming from that joint.

yes, I mean techno. and, as tongue-in-cheek as this could be taken, and should be taken in normal circumstance, it's not even Tiesto quality. and that's sayin' something. cause that shit sux

Could you be a little more specific about this 90s trash throwback? Happy Sappy Hardcore? Big and Bouncy Beat? Acid-Base? Italo-Garage? Ibiza-Goa-Wannabe?

there was a variety of garbage. most of it sounded like that crap that gets played on 101 or 102 (I'm bad with radio stations, sorry) every 5th song, sandwiched between justin timberlake and snow patrol. I have no idea what to call it, other than "american reaction to the trainspotting soundtrack". though the actual artists (I use the term loosely) may not actually be american.
  • I hope Develop Don't Destroy starts a campaign about this. Shameful.
  • fwiw, ripple is continuing tonight. I'm assuming they have a guest DJ from slovenia or hoboken and are paying him/her with free booze.

i love being away for the weekend on nights like this! thanks, alfairnadia!

Don't you dare knock Slovenia; more than any other small European country, those guys have been on the artistic cutting edge. Now if it were DJ Unknown Eurotrash from Paris or Munich scamming his/her way to an American vacation I could understand.

    lol

ok. let's just assume it's someone from hoboken.
  • oh, and I've been informed by non-hoboken types that what I was hearing is referred to as "chart techno" or "chart music" in places in the world where electronic music actually charts.

I love how every country has their own special flavor of shitty dance music.
  • are you sure it's Ripple bar and not some neighbor bumpin the shit at home?
  • izisharp wrote: are you sure it's Ripple bar and not some neighbor bumpin the shit at home?
yeah. if it's coming in my front window, and I can hear an increase in volume when the bar door opens and a decrease when it closes ... well. I blame ripple. :)
  • hmm...i've yet to actually here anything close to techno at Ripple. was it really that bad? I should get my dj skills sharpend and have a talk with John Bo. :)

do it! if you actually PLAY decent techno, I'll show up. bad techno pains my soul. good techno makes me happy.

i keep meaning to get a gig there. (good) techno is coming back into style again 8)

you should. I think your style, actually, would fit really well there.

but is good techno really making a come back in the US? or is it just that we've wound our way musically back through the 80s and we're starting to retread the 90s and for every new daft punk we get, we'll have to put up with a 10 chemical brothers knock offs?
  • I've secured a gig there at an undetermined date where me and my roommate are going to do a new jack swing / electro r&b set, watch out neighbors.

please alert us when the date is set. gracias.
  • ooh exciting. Some techno lovers in the hood. I used to have a radio show, back in Iowa. miss those days. gotta get my shit together and start playing for the people again...haha.

:?: Anyone know of places other than Ripple spinning electronic beats?
 (wouldn't mind finding a nice chill minimal tech type place)

Please post when you set the date--I love me some of that Teddy Riley shit.

I, being a former raver, have love for the techno-- but if you're gonna do it right, more Detroit, more Chicago, less KTU.

Why doesn't it surprise that Iowa would be better than New York when it comes to Electronica on the radio?

I go more for Terry than Teddy.

Maybe we need to start a local support group for those with FR syndrome. Somewhere with lots of cushions and cryogenic beats.
  • I have some Terry Riley but it might be hard to mix it with Sharon Redd.

jaded ex raver's retirement home of southern brooklyn...

I made a New Jack Swing mixtape awhile back that I'd offer to burn a copy of if I could find it.
  • so ... after attending a hilarious italo-rave last night in the financial district, I came home to ripple playing ... r&b.
  • techno has two meanings -- it's funny -- for europeans they mean stuff with no vocals, really underground "hard" stuff -- for americans, when they say "techno", often they mean what in europe is called "dance". And "dance" in europe is a lot more mainstream and pop-oriented

for "american" style techno (i.e. european "dance"), the best example I've found is this (itunes link):

    MOD EDIT: Spam link removed
    strangely it's called "euro club hits" ... which makes things even more confusing ;

for "european" style techno... i.e. the stuff with no songs, I recommend going to www.beatport.com and checking out the stuff in the "techno" section

pop-techno = bad techno in my lingo. it might be fun "dance" music if you're at some horrible club on the west side in the 20s in manhattan, but really, it's just shitty.

good techno is surgeon. good techno is drexciya. and really, if any bar in this part of brooklyn wants to play that stuff, I'll come by and support it. I already spend too much time in hipsterville for a techno fix.

(and really, we all just need an excuse to raise a fist and yell "rave!!")

Other than being hung over my neighbor is a techno dj, he blast the music so loud for hours on end its driving me to drink more!!!!

Will I show my age if I yell "the roof, the roof, the roof is on fire . . ." ;)

nope! house music and all derivatives are always welcome. except bad techno.
  • Alaf, I'm not sure there's actually anyone at the receiving end of your response.

Anyone else notice anything a little suspect here?

everyone knows that the hottest dance tracks come from the euros.....check this compilation series on itunes... it's the "Euro Club Hits" series... for example..... extremely good stuff -- here's the direct itunes link:
