(CNN) -- Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who headed the U.S. military as it went to war first in Afghanistan and then Iraq, is resigning.

President Bush stood beside Rumsfeld, even as the defense chief became more and more of a target for opponents of the administration and even as the criticism grew from inside military circles. A week before Tuesday's critical midterm elections, Bush said he wanted Rumsfeld to stay until he leaves the White House in 2009.

Donald Rumsfeld's Iraqi war plan worked beautifully for three weeks. U.S. troops quickly deposed Saddam Hussein and captured Baghdad with a relatively small force and with lightning speed.

But with Iraq on the verge of civil war three years later, the secretary of defense now admits that no one was well-prepared for what would happen after major combat ended.

"Well, I think that anyone who looks at it with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight has to say that there was not an anticipation that the level of insurgency would be anything approximating what it is," Rumsfeld told CNN for the documentary, "CNN Presents Rumsfeld -- Man of War," which ran in September.

That's going to be hard to do. At least when it concerns Iraq. The Dems voted whole heartedly with Bush to go to war, they saw the same briefings, etc. And, they like Bush ignored Hans Blix and the UN when both questioned the authenticity of the intelligence reports. Then again it is ironic that Clinton was almost impeached for lying to Ken Starr about a blow-job.

Let's talk numbers here... What were Rumsfeld's most recent approval ratings? This Fox News article said that as far back as *April* they hit a record low of 35%:

I'm curious if the Dems are going to try and force the pres and VP to resign. I don't believe they will be conciliatory towards a administratione that has not only left them in the dark but raked them over the coals since they (GOP) tried to impeach Clinton. President Pelosi anyone?
