Suggestions for good (not necessarily expensive) restaurants — Brooklynian

Suggestions for good (not necessarily expensive) restaurants

All,

got friends, and later on relatives, coming to visit. I'm new to the area, where shall I bring them for dinner out?

  • For casual not-too-expensive places, I like Noodle Pudding on Henry Street (between Middagh and Cranberry). They don't take reservations and it's cash only. The food is very good, sometimes excellent (get the strozzapretti), and the service is low-key and friendly.

Practically next door to Noodle Pudding is Henry's End. It's a solid local new American/regional cuisine with an emphasis on meat and game, and they take reservations for parties of 4 or more. The tables are a little close together and there's nothing overly fancy about the decor, but the portions are big, the menu is creative and you'll eat well.

Both Henry's End and Noodle Pudding are in the Zagat guide, if you want to check it for reviews.

I also really like newcomer Jack the Horse Tavern on Hicks Street at Cranberry (they have a website, www.jackthehorse.com). Again, good neighborhood atmosphere and an ambitious menu that is well executed - the hanger steak is superb. I've had a couple minor glitches in service - they're extremely friendly but sometimes the kitchen and bar can be a touch slow. It's definitely worth a try.
