My Shiba had a seizure this morning (Animal Kind emergency)
Went to Animal Kind hospital for emergency treatment.
Seizures are so scary in animals.
Basically, he was laying on my feet on the couch and started twitching. I looked at him and he had his paw over his face, so I thought he was just scratching his face. But it didn't stop, so I tried to move his paw and it wouldnt move. I moved Aki into a standing position, but he kind of fell over and his right paw stayed up against his chest. i put him on the floor, and he kind of struggled and hopped into the extra bedroom. I went to get a bottle of water for him and came back and he was in the corner shaking, paw still up. After about 5 minutes he calmed down but was very scared.
I took him to Animal Kind on 7th ave at 10th st. It cost about $224 for emergency appt + blood and urine tests, but they were really kind and efficient. and CLEAN. But I won't get results til Tues. The vet said it was a "Partial seizure", because usually in full seizures, the animal would be contracting fully, completely unaware and would lose control of bowels and bladder.
Their prices for shots and neutering are way more than I can afford (I'll be going to humane society for that) tho. Humane society unfortunately does not have emergency services (I called them first).
Can someone tell me about any Pet Insurance you use?
Or any other experiences with seizures in pets?

My dog had something similar happen to him. Some dogs do get epilepsy. Seizures are not that unusual in dogs. I didn't know that until it happened to my own dog and I started telling people - who often had anecdotes about other dogs with the same problem.
My dog's experience was similar because he didn't lose consciousness, only sort of "froze up" and lost coordination for about 30 seconds. Only other symptoms were a look of fear on his face, racing heart, and not being able to stand up.
It happened twice to my dog - both times were last year. He's three and a half years old.
I took him to the vet at Humane Society (more affordable than local vets BTW). He advised me not to do anything, just observe. As long as the "seizures" are rare, they don't harm the dog. It's not necessary to medicate the dog unless they have back-to-back recurring grand mal seizures that don't stop. Those can cause brain damage. Petit mal seizures that occur only occasionally don't cause any permanent harm, although they are scary to witness.
Also, my vet was not entirely convinced that it was a seizure. My dog didn't lose consciousness either time, and he still had some coordination. It may have been some kind of panic attack. My dog has a normal calm temperament, but just like in people panic attacks can come on with no warning or catalyst and have all kinds of physical symptoms that seem really serious. -
panic attack? hmmmm
I wanted to go to Humane Society but they don't take emergencies they said on the phone.
I'm just worried that he could be seizing when we're not home to watch him..
the Dr. said to videorecord the next time it happens so he can get a better diagnosis.
test results tomorrow... -
Animal Kind is nice at first but after a while they become very expensive and nasty the minute you have problems paying. The have such high rates because of the location,my vet is on Nostrand Ave charges half the price and truly loves my dog.

I paid Animal Kind around $200 for a non-emergency visit that did not require testing. The staff is great, but the prices are painful.
