Please help me with my crack pup
I recently rescued a puppy that was being mistreated by some crackheads in Bed Stuy. It is a Min Pin male. The crackheads claimed that the pup was 6 months old. He weighs less than 1 lb and is painfully thin. My vet says that the pup is at most 2 months old. Not sure why the crackheads lied about his age. I have had him a week and I am in love with him already.
Understandably, he is very very very jumpy and scared. Everything scares him. I am keeping him confined in the bathroom and if I turn on a tap he is absolutely TERRIFIED to the point where he almost totally loses it. For the first week he would not let me touch him. Finally he will let me touch him and even pick him up and give him a cuddle and stroke him. This makes me really happy. I just want to nurture him and make him happy and well adjusted.
I do have another dog - a young adult Min Pin who is boisterous, outgoing and very loving and maternal towards the new pup.
My question is, what do I do next?
I hired a dog trainer who has since gone MIA but he suggested I handle the new shy pup as often as possible.
What else?
I tried putting a leash on her to practice walking on a leash and he was absolutely terrified, so we had to stop that.
All he seems to want is silence and to lay quietly in my arms and look up at me. He's so very quiet for a Min Pin.

I'm so happy you rescued her, that's a ton of good karma for you...
I rescued a one year old male minpin 7 years ago who also came from a very abusive situation; he still has a large scar on his back from being beaten. He would also cringe away every time I leaned down to pet him for about 6 months, it was appalling...but he became a very loving and lovable sweetheart, if still a bit scared underneath it all.
Give her time, let her relax in her new home and get used to you and your other dog. She will, the fact that she's so young is in your favor. Just let her lay in your arms and bond with you for a while. Don't worry! Minpins are very adaptable. Good luck! -
have you tried leaving the TV on, say, outside the door of the bathroom? so that the puppy gets used to hearing noise on a more constant basis? I've heard this works for frightened dogs.
good luck! -
My 2 cents - put the leash on and walk it, don't worry about it being frightened. This dog's fear is completely irrational and if you show (by your own actions) that there's nothing to be concerned with, it'll get over it faster than you think. Be a leader.
The flip side - if the dog learns that showing fear and/or aggression gets it out of situations that it feels uncomfortable with, guess what it's going to do whenever things aren't going it's way?
Best of luck. -

Time for some tough love, huh?

I prefer to think of it as 'not being an enabler.' Love it all you want, but only when it's behaving the way you want it to.

I hope the poor little darling grows a bit. He must have been the runt of his litter. At his current size, Paris Hilton might try to steal him because he is the poster pup for "teacup" dogs.

You'll have post pics!

okay, that's just disturbing.

OH jesus christ! poor freaking creature...He has testicles, so there's no way he's only 1 or 2 months old! he's so tiny because he was not fed properly, oh, how can anyone abuse a tiny creature... how much does he weigh now?
I have rescued two chihuahuas in my life, both severely maltreated, and they both came back from being absolutely skeletal, you'll have good luck with this little guy!
When I brought my current chihuahua home, she slept for almost 3 days straight, only waking to eat. I thought she had no personality whatsoever, but it most definitely developed when she began to recover. -

So why on earth would the vet say he was only a couple of month's old?

At this point he weighs just over a pound!!! The Min Pin he is with in the second pic is only 9 lbs herself, so that gives you an idea of how tiny the new guy is.
I'm glad to hear about your chi. Where did you get her from? I really think this little guy has a lot of potential. He's beginning to recognize that I only want to help him and he is responding accordingly.
He keeps getting hard-ons all the time, perhaps because he is stressed. -

as my mother has said to multitudes of rescued dachsunds: "put the lipstick away!"
*shudder* -

lol. At one point he was getting his lipstick out every time I spoke. I guess I have a sexy voice  -
I have no idea why your vet thinks that, but they don't drop until 5 or 6 months, right? The crackheads might still be a little more accurate. Your other MinPin is only 9 slender lbs? He's unbelievably tiny!
Mine is a whopping, monster 28lbs.
My chi Penny came from a sleazy rescue group from the Bronx, she was found wandering the streets, skeletal and filthy. She was at the sucker set-up in the Petco in Union Square. -

Good lord! Is your Min Pin very fat or just naturally big? I believe that sometimes people think they have a Min Pin when they actually have either a German Pinscher or a Manchester Terrier. A pure Min Pin is unlikely to get much bigger than 12 lbs or, say, 16lbs if very very overweight. Even though my Pin is only 9lbs she is actually too chunky (she is very greedy) and needs to lose a little weight. I've doubled the duration of her daily walks and cut out the bits of steak from my plate I kept giving her. The other poor Pin needs all the food he can get.
Oh and on the subject of puppy's balls dropping - I've no idea. I've always had girl dogs up until now. -
He's a real MinPin with papers. He's both naturally big AND fat, he'll eat absolutely anything, and I'm Jewish, so he gets overfed. After Thanksgiving, he's got to go on a diet as well. I think they take these dogs away from their mothers too early, and they never get over that "oral" phase. Murphy would happily eat until he explodes, if he could.
How's your little guy doing? Better? I still can't believe how small he is. -

My older Pin (11 months) will not stop eating either. I need to put her on Atkins or something -
I asked the vet this afternoon re: testicles dropping, and she said it can happen anytime after 4 weeks, so I was mistaken. It's that your not supposed to NEUTER them before 5 or 6 months.
Howdy, Stranger!
