location location location - Underhill btwn Pacific and Dean
Thinking of relocating to P Heights from Park Slope... currently at Union St @ GMA. Please shed light on the highlights of the Underhill and Dean spot. Which subways do you use most often? Dry cleaners? Corner bodega? Supermarket? Safety? Do you see this as location that is up and coming, already arrived, or slow to change?
Is it true that The Washington might rent out their retail space to a high end food market?
Appreciate your input...

That seems like a pretty decent location to me. It's about 1-2 blocks from where I am on Underhill. You'll smell Tavern on Dean's calamari on a regular basis.

I think this is very up and coming. It's been a little slow thus far but now the washington is coming to life as are a number of other new developments, st. marks lofts, Pacific Blue, 647 washington + the one next door to it, etc. In the next 12 months there will be a large influx of new residents. The amenities are starting to come already but I expect much more to pop up over the next year or so.

Good location. Safety should not be a major issue. The nearest train is the C at Clinton/Washington, but the Grand Army Plaze (2/3) and the Seventh Ave. (B and Q) stations are relatively nearby. I agree with Ben's prediction. Off the top of my head, I can think of five condo projects in the works. A great Japanese restaurant, Gen, is a stone's throw away. Tavern on Dean is also there. There's a bodega on (I think) the corner of Bergen Street. Pretty quiet at night, too.

Welcome - I live right on Underhill between Dean and Bergen. I have never felt anything but safe here. As far as subways I usually take the 2 or 3 at Bergen street in the morning (the walk is downhill) and then take the 2 or 3 to Grand Army Plaza when I come home (a great walk on Vanderbilt and its not uphill) where I can stop off for something sweet (at Joyce's) something for my husband and son to eat (Met Food) and something for my kitties (Acme Pet Store) and of course something for me (at Fermented Grapes - a really nice wine store). The C train is right at Clinton and Washington (3 blocks from you) and the B/Q is on Flatbush and Sterling(?). There are times where I will take the 2 to Bergen and then hop on the 65 bus which runs right up Dean Street and leaves you either on the corner of Dean and Vanderbilt or Dean and Washington. We absolutely LOVE Tavern on Dean and we never order from Purity (right across from it). As I said there is a Met Food on Vanderbilt but I prefer to do the bulk of my shopping at Key Food on 5th Ave (NOT the one on 7th or Flatbush) and the Farmers Market (which is at Grand Army Plaza every Saturday) and try to get out to Fairway in Red Hook when I can. The bodega on Bergen and Underhill is great and is open 24 hours a day. As for dry cleaning I do not use one close by, I go to Bridge Cleaners downtown.
I have to say you are making a great choice. This is definitely the place to be. It is really a great area mixed with old and new residents coexisting peacefully and happily (not matter what you read on this board
).
Oh and if you hear a loud crazy man screaming - its just my husband yelling at the games on TV

great insight... especially from stacey. thanks to all. keep the input coming.
and, yes - we've been to tavern on dean and loved it. the best buffalo burgers in the world. how long has t.o.d. been there? -
Just curious: Are you moving into that new ultra-luxe condo development across from Tavern on Dean?
-
yes, considering a move to the washington.
still feels "off the grid" to me but might be b/c i don't know enough about p. heights.
thoughts on the washington and the hood? -
I definitely don't think that is off the grid at all. It's a fantastic location, and I think you'd really enjoy it.
Gopher it. -
wytopick, have you read onehansonplace.com?
-
yup, have read onehansonplace.com. have read several other sites/blogs about the washington as well.
our hesitation more than anything is with the public schools this area is zoned for and we need to get over the fact that we feel it's "far" - probably b/c we've been in the north slope for so long.
more thoughts? -
I dont know how old you child is but my son is in the 5th grade at PS 9 (right on Underhill and Bergen). He has really done well in this school and the school just keeps improving. This year they have added quite a few afterschool activities like chess, robotics, dance, piano, violin, etc. You can set up a tour of the school anytime you like.

the washington is zoned for ps 9 for elementary and middle school 352... -
actually there are quite a few jr highs to chose from. You get to select the schools that are in your district (ours is 13).
