shearling v. down filled — Brooklynian

shearling v. down filled

As an Arizona girl, I was wondering if a shearling coat is warmer than a down filled one? If so, what's good shearling? I see Spanish shearling advertised often. I've read things about avoiding shearling from some countries. Heck, I'm not even sure what shearling is. Anyway, I have not thawed out since it got cold and am looking for a coat that I can have for next year too. My 600 down filled coat isn't working for me and just isn't that attractive, so I was wondering if I should try something else. Any shopping tips on coats would be appreciated :?

  • Delancy Street used to be the place that I went to for all my down and/or shearling coats - haven't bought one in a while though. I usually get my coats at Sims and Century 21. At this point in the season everything should be on sale so you might even be able to get a nice on at the bigger Department Stores (Macy's, etc.).
  • There are also a few at Daffy's that looked nice...not too thick. The last shearling coat I had was a vintage monstrosity that was way too cumbersome and heavy. I guess the trick is to find something light, yet warm.
  • Well, most high-performance (for retaining heat, that is) coats aren't all that attractive... If you want something that looks good, your best best is getting something that stops wind well and does a reasonable job of retaining heat. From there, layer accordingly under your coat. 3 layers and a windproof coat > 1 layer and ultra heavy jacket. Also, if you can avoid having cotton (and other fabrics that retain moisture) against your skin, you'll stay a little toastier.
  • in below 30 (or so) weather, I like a regular shirt, a cashmere sweater, and my big puffy down coat. above 30 (or so, and obvi below jacket weather) I like my wind resistant, polar fleece lined coat. :)

Definately NOT from MN, 'cause when someone from MN say "in below 30..." it means -30 deg F and that attire wouldn't get the job done!
