SPLIT TOPIC: SHILLING by SLOPE HEALTH AND FITNESS

ccolhandluke wrote: I thought this was an open forum. I guess it is unless one is saying good things about THE SLOPE HEALTH AND FITNESS. I don't see any complaints about all of the "shilling" going on in favor of Sage, Opal, Springtyme, or any other Spa. What's the problem people?
mod note: Of course it *is* an open forum. The other spas don't appear to be shilling.
Our registered posters are remarkably good at sniffing out who is sharing their personal experience and who is working a commercial interest. Something about the vibe or the writing style . . . there you have it.
This forum is for people to get and share info - more or less free of commercial interests. We have a separate area for free advertising that all are welcome to use.
I'm moving this part of the discussion to Board Admin, if you'd like to discuss board policy further.
the original thread this is from is in Park Slope, here

slope health + fitness: instead of shilling you could try using some honey
as in coupons for free honey scrub deep tissue massages
then we'd all be blowing profuse wind up youse skirts -

1) You folks are very resourceful and I like this site already
2) I think it's best I stay away from Slope H&F.
Hey shishkab, gotta love em cookies!
I happen to like te Slope H&F and they also offer classes without having to join a full membership.
People should make up their own minds, and not be influenced by others who have alternative motives for knocking a place. -
The only motive anyone has to knock Slope Fitness is that its owners/employees have frequently and repeatedly shown up here to shill (in a completely obvious, ham-handed way) for the place under the guise of "satisfied customers." This practice makes them look incompetent at best, not to mention deceitful and obnoxious—not really the qualities anyone is looking for in their local gym employees.

JJB,
Shilling works both ways. The other yoga studio's and the other gyms have all had posts that "shilled" for them. And how do we know that their owners and investors are not involved in these posts?
Because there seems to be alot of negative posts directed only at The Slope H&F.
Something to think about. :-k -
Nikolas,
Before you get all excited and defend your precious gym, I'm not influenced by others. To be fair, I would say that while I was put off the ridiculous postings of staff at PSHF, I also went to check out the gym. I would not go there because the place is too small and the staff are incompetent. I do not have the time or patience to deal with idiots.
That being said, I may be new to the boards but I am not an idiot. I have been living in the neighborhood for years. Just from your name alone, I know for a fact that you have a financial interest in the gym. Live and let live. -

My first name is with a ch, not a k. Anyway, the fact that I am being assumed to being associated with the Slope is a compliment in itself. My family owns the building where the club is, and we rent the space to the Union Fitness Organization. As you are obviously "not an idiot" you must know the distinction.
That being said. the sarcastic tone in your first paragraph is without merit.
Live and let live works for me as well, but I do not appreciate newcomers coming into the area and bad mouthing places.
You did not enjoy your experience, that's your perogative. Shouldn't other people have the same choice? -
Nicholas, I agree with you, everyone should make decisions on their own. I'm not forcing my opinions down anyone's throat. I would hope that like most educated consumers, someone who reads these posts would check out the place before forming their own conclusions. If they don't, that's not my problem. I myself read the awful reviews yet I took the time to visit the gym before posting my opinion.
BUT, this IS an open forum. Forums are used to EXPRESS OPINIONS- and I don't mean to be condescending but these opinions include both the praiseworthy as well as the SCATHING. It's almost like you writing to citysearch or menupages and saying "dear sir, you put up a negative review written by a customer, i insist that you remove it down before a potential patron sees it and gets scared away!" . -

Do you get the feeling that we are stating the same thing only in different ways? Where you are accentuating the negative with capitals, I am trying to accentuate the positive.

This forum is the purest form of democracy. Much like in ancient times, where the greeks used to be able to speak at the foot of the Acropolis without fear of retribution.
The opinions expressed are just that. Yours and mine included. Nothing here should be taken as gospel.
There should be no retribution for opinions expressed and no censorship for what is said. As long as it's clean. Bad behavior is much like bad manners, should be corrected but not banished or shouted down.
take care. -

y tu, nicholas george kotsonis?
Speaking as a board moderator, I was hoping you folks had decided to sit this one out for once. Really, you're doing your business more harm than good. Nobody but NOBODY has shilled like Slope H&F has shilled, monomaniacally and relentlessly on this boards.
say hi to garfield girl for us!
(so as to not make this an insider thing, I will share with the rest of the board that you two share an internet service provider. just sayin'.
WE SEE YOU!)
ilovecarbs!
yes, do register and stick around!
here's an old martial arts/fitness thread for you, school info if you scroll down a bit

The CAE place just moved to 7th St near 5th Ave, and they have a martial arts-based fitness class Monday nights taught by a lovely woman named Delia. People looooove her. Everything else there is karate or tai chi.
Two of my pals love the spinning woman at The Bank (5th Ave and Union.) I don't know what their per-class deal is, and I know they have at least one good yoga teacher but the hours of her classes never worked for me. I like the dudes that run the place although I'm not a member.
I swim - at Berkeley-Carroll. You buy a punch card for 20 visits, and they have a limited machine room. -

PITU,
That's not very difficult to understand, as seeing that my building 808 Union Street does not have cable service and the internet is only accessible from the telephone lines. Time Warner has refused to wire this building, stating that the junction boxes are too far for decent service.
We use direct TV to get video.
Also for some reason, AOL and Microsoft Explorer are the only one's that comes in the strongest.
Also, we rent satelite offices in the building, as well as the Berkeley Carroll School administrative offices on the 3rd floor. The fact that the building has the same service provider is done out of necessity for the tenants. So for the record, Garfield Girl, probabably works in the building and is a member of the club. So that child like comment of WE SEE YOU, is immature, assinine, and totally without merit.
Thank you. -

What Pitu meant is that you have the same IP address, which would not be explained by the fact that you use the same ISP.

Speaking as another moderator here, I have to tell you that your shilling here is not gaining you any business. If you had wanted to simply make an appeal as someone with a financial stake in the place that would be fine. But when you pretend to be a regular customer, as you did in your first post in this thread, or when you create totally transparent alter-egos to parrot your views, you are only making your gym look like the kind of place that nobody wants to do business with. -
Thanks for clarifying that Carnivore. I was, as the NYT would say, imprecise.

Subject: explain ip address
Do you mean that someone else had access to my computer in my office?
Is that possible?
We have a staff of full and part time of 5 people plus contractors and workers.
How would they be able to get access, short of walking into my office? Or could they being doing that?
I'm in and out of the office all day running around to the properties. We are also networked so that all of the computers can "talk" to each other. I'm not really sure what that all means, but I'm able to get info from other hard drives.
It it possible to get access that way?
Would really like to know. Because if something fishy is going on, then I have to stop it. -
Subject: Re: explain ip address
yes ngk, something "fishy" is going on.
we have dozens of posts from Slope H&F on multiple threads
it'd be grand if you'd send out a memo for *everyone* to CUT IT OUT because it's costing you business.
ask your computer tech what IP is!nicholas george kotsonis wrote: Do you mean that someone else had access to my computer in my office?

Fake bloggers soon to be ‘named and shamed’
Sam Coates, Political Correspondent
Hotels, restaurants and online shops that post glowing reviews about themselves under false identities could face criminal prosecution under new rules that come into force next year.
Businesses which write fake blog entries or create whole wesbites purporting to be from customers will fall foul of a European directive banning them from “falsely representing oneself as a consumerâ€. -
third mod on this post: shilling is obnoxious. plenty of people who post regularly on this board have financial interest in one or more local businesses. sometimes they discuss their businesses. guess what they ALSO do? they post a disclaimer toward the end of their post saying something like "fyi, for full disclosure, I have a financial stake in this enterprise".
sorta like when NY1 ALWAYS discloses if a business owned by Time Warner is part of one of their stories.
this practice is generally referred to as honesty.
if you have a stake in a business in the local area, go ahead and tell us. better yet, post in the classifieds or buy an ad - this board isn't free and internets don't grow on trees. people will respect you and your business more if you are honest, straightforward, and stop acting like you really want a RICO indictment. -
Subject: 33805
If the PC crowd would review my post, I did not specifically recommend the Slope Health & Fitness. I stated that the Y is closer to where he is moving to. The Body Reserve is more basic, and the Slope Fitness is more upscale.
I also stated that they are a bit out of his way.
The fact that I am involved in Real Estate has no relevance to what I stated.
That is not "shilling"
I also stated that it depends on what kind of atmosphere the person desires. Individuals are intelligent enough to make up their own minds without being influenced by others.
It seems to me that there are certain persons who have a slanted view of things on this board.
Seeing as how I am registered on this post, and not hiding my identity with nicknames should also tell you something.
MOD NOTE: MOVED FROM 33805 -
If you're going to comment on a business in which you have a financial interest, YOU HAVE TO DISCLOSE THAT IN THE POST.
It's not rocket science. -
rocket math.
