haha, yes i do that normally - just need a decent place to get some suppliments - is there nothing?

I'm further south (8th and Pres.)... there are some decent bodegas around 7th and Garfield that work well for emergency produce needs. Key Food on 7th and Carroll is vile.

Ah yes, I've been to one down there - I've heard news that a new food store was opening on 5th ave sometime soon - can't remember the exact name, but apparently something akin to Whole Foods. Too bad the only Dag's is so far from me... I need a decent bodega somewhere near Flatbush or 6th - any thoughts on that area?

10 years ago, yes. There would be a few more options. But nowadays Fresh Direct--especially in neighborhoods like Park Slope--is edging out the small guys.
I'm a member of the Park Slope Food Coop, and if you can wing/handle the 2 hours and 45 minutes you need to work there every 4 weeks, it's really the best local bet. The quality and price is unbeatable. And the produce is really great because the turnover is quite high. Nothing really sits on the shelf for long there. -

Do you mean the Union St Market? That just opened on Union and 6th... it's quite good.
The co-op does have great produce and cheap prices. I just don't really buy the work-to-shop model. I was a longtime member of a food co-op in Seattle, but you just paid a membership fee that supported the employees. -

Well, 2 hours and 45 minutes is about the same amount of time anyone can spend going to the movies and such. Tons of co-ops have different models of how they work. Park Slope Food Co-op does what they do, and it's actually kind of cool to work with people from the neighborhood. There's a pretty cool community atmosphere that's worth the effort I think. -
Yeah I plan to join the coop also - what do you mean by "win" the time? Can't anyone sign up to join?
The place on 5th ave that will sell organic stuff is what i was hearing about. I tell ya - new york needs a "Wegmans." I grew up with it and it was the best thing for the community - tons of jobs, great place to work, healthy food, easy to shop in etc... I love the 'mom and pops,' but sometimes a place like Wegmans is just so much easier...

Sorry, I didn't mean to dis the co-op or it's members... I just literally do not have the time to squeeze into my schedule. I'd much rather pay a fee and have that time to myself.
At any rate, FreshDirect has hopelessly spoiled me. -

That was a typo on my part. What I meant to say is if you can wing/handle the 2 hour and 45 minute workslot, it's worth it. But anyone and everyone can join.
My best suggestion is that you attend an orientation meeting:
http://www.foodcoop.com/PSFC/how_to_join/index.htmlNew Member Orientations are held every Monday and Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m., every Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m., and every Sunday at 4:00 p.m.. Orientations begin promptly and last approximately two hours. Once the Orientation has begun, latecomers will not be admitted so please arrive on time. The Meeting Room (on the Coop’s second floor) is open ahead of time for those who wish to arrive early.
The orientation basically explains the co-op and how it works. What's great is that by attending you're not under any obligation to join immediately--although you can if you wish--and you're given a 'Member-for-a-Day' pass that allows you to shop once prior to joining.
So attend the orientation. Get the pass. Actually shop and check the place out and see what it's like. And if you're into it, join. If not, then no obligation to do anything else. -
The Coop is great for meeting a cross section of brooklyn too . . . the quality and prices are phenomenal, but you also get a bunch of people who might actually TALK to each other...
as for the Union Market -- I ran in there for a can of something, and it cost me $2.59. The exact same item is $1.59 at the Associated on Fifth Ave between Union and President. phoooey!
The big Key Food on Fifth and . . . I forget the cross - Baltic maybe?
is pretty good for a conventional grocery. For that matter, the Associated has rocketed in quality the past few years . . .
