Just curious as to how much you know about them?

Sometime next month or early march my friend and I are planning to move to Brooklyn. Currently i'm from long island i've lived here for my 20 years of existence. For the past two days I have read your blogs trying to get a feel for the atmosphere, it seems to be a nice community.

I found an apartment online for rent that I believe is in Prospect Heights. How is it there? Alot of crime?

Theres crime everywhere, this I know but is it excessive?

Any other suggestions of where to move?

We want to be close to a subway and not too far from Manhattan. We're only looking for a studio or maybe even a one bedroom.

    Hi,

I encourage you to continue reading the boards. also, please note that NYC, like a lot of urban spaces, can change block by block - there are threads on this board about specific blocks in Brooklyn that will give you a lot of information.

further, and I'd guess you know this, but it is a smart thing to do when moving to a new area to wander it on foot both day and night to get the vibe. your street smarts and spidey-sense should help you determine the safety of your particular area.

    good luck!

well, it sounds like you know enough, snotty or not. take a walk through the areas you consider 'no good' and then wander other areas. your definition of no good, bushwick and bed stuy, denote two completely different neighborhoods (in my experience) and, therefore, provide very little insight into your definitions of good or no good. so, with that little information, you'll either need to be more specific in your needs (schools, shopping, subway lines, price concerns, etc) or you'll need to just do the legwork, which I'd encourage. then, when you've found a space, I'd encourage you to post the location here to find out about that specific block.

the thing about the neighborhoods you mention is that some people on this board live in them -- obviously they find them adequately safe. likely there are others on the board who wouldn't set foot in them. there is no objective answer.

if you look at the bed-stuy board, you will get a sense of what issues -- good and bad -- people living there are concerned with. keep in mind that bed-stuy is HUGE -- there is no substitute for walking around for yourself.

i did that when moving here from chicago (bit more of a schlep than L.I.), literally writing down street by street what i thought of each of the 10 or so neighborhoods we looked at ("street x: looks ok from streets A-D; sketchier after that -- is that factory operating? close to train but only G", etc.). it's a pain, and it is time well-spent.

I could be wrong...but I think you are talking about my very first home in Brooklyn when I was a baby, before my parents snatched me up and headed for the midwestern hills! Hilarious. IF we are talking about the same place then put it this way...it was considered 'nice high rises' in the '70s, but since then...not so much.

MOD NOTE: I'm moving this to the Brooklyn and Beyond board, since it doesn't have to do with PH specifically.
